Notes on Living Life
in a Sacred Way

No. 17

...Dear friends

Sliding on ice with my son the other day, I was reminded of how much risk is needed to have some fun. He took great risk running across the ice, and his slide was magnificent.  My run was not so fast, my slide not so impressive, though as time wore on, and I saw how much fun he was having, I ran a little faster, tried a little harder.  Children are great teachers in their ways of living lightly.

ICE UNDER MY FEET
This season, I have been in what I call my "hermit" phase, the phase in which I stop scheduling very much and focus on my writing.  It is an appropriate phase for winter, when much of the world around us is incubating, sleeping, hibernating or just plain frozen.  In this time, reflection comes easily, because there is ample time for contemplation.

In the Lakota tradition, the medicine wheel houses the four directions of the earth, each of which is symbolic of various aspects of our inner life.  The wheel is used in healing ceremonies, honoring the unity of the four directions.  The "north" section, whose color is white, has to do with wisdom.  Wisdom needs the stillness of the north --a stillness encouraged by the presence of ice and cold--to gestate.

What does this have to do with risk? It takes some boldness to honor a state of being that goes contrary to the general rule.  At a time when people are scurrying about, worried that the economic sky is falling, it may seem like an odd time to sit indoors and focus on a project that you've been wanting to get done, or to do any number of non-productive non-activities. But on the other hand, consider the long-term impact of not honoring your deepest impulses.  Taken in that light, it is not bold at all.  It is common sense!

Practice:
Meditate on the element of water that has become frozen. What was fluid is now standing still.  What was clear is now white, opaque.  What was warm is now too cold to touch. Consider the intelligence of this element as it is expressed in our lives -- how we have times of fluidity and times of standing still, times of clarity and times of opaqueness.  Ask yourself of the various aspects of your life (relationships, finance, creative expression, etc.)-- are you in a time of liquidity or stillness?  Honor and accept the intelligence of what is.

Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.
