:: The Power of the Triangle
:: Abundance in Stillness
Dear friends

Our common home--our natural world--is an exceedingly abundant habitat.  We have so "developed" it with our human-made structures, that it is easy to overlook the fact that nature provides our food, it provides the energy that nurtures our existence, it offers the beauty that lifts our spirits, it is our primary home.

As we move indoors during these winter months, it's a time to bring some of nature's bounty in, whether it is a tree, or pine cones, or some new house plants.  This is a tradition that has passed through many centuries, to remember and honor life's bounty, even in this time of growing stillness.

The Power
of the Triangle

Sitting with your legs crossed (or on the floor if necessary), put your arms down and away from your sides, about 12" away from your body.  Anchor your hands palms down onto the floor or onto the sofa you are sitting on.

Your body and its base should form a triangle.  The arms provide the sides.  The base is formed by an imaginary line connecting your hands and the base of your body.  Your head sits at top!

Feel the strength and power of this form.  Imagine you are a mountain in all of its organic strength.  Breathe air into your belly; see your breath as the wind cleansing the mountain, both inside and out.

Find the similarities between your own strength and the strength of a mountain.  A mountain is a nurturing home for many creatures and organisms.  See if you can connect to this sense of abundance and strength within yourself.
Abundance in Stillness

This week, I woke up one morning to have my son, Gabriel, literally jumping up and down.  We had our first dusting of snow, and he was gleeful, because it is only early December and it seemed a promise that there would be more to come.

We went upstairs, to look out the 2nd floor window down at the sparkling trees.  I noticed the skinny branches of our dogwood, and how a thin line of white lined each branch.

His mood was contagious. I forgot how breath-taking a first snow can be.  Taking a moment to stop and actually look, I saw the magic all over again.

Some months ago, I was meditating on the human condition; how it is that we have come to create this culture that is so splintered in our connections to each other and our common humanity.

The thing that came to me, very directly, as if someone were standing over my shoulder and telling me:  "Look, look out at the grassy fields and the rivers; look at the abundant branches of the trees; look at the sky and its rich canvas of colors.  These things are put here to nourish you, so that you will know that your life is abundant and rich.  When humans understand this richness, they understand their fundamental connection to all of life, and their sorrow is not as great."

This is a time for bringing the outdoors in -- trees, garlands, pine cones.  Or if you live somewhere warmer, maybe it is still good weather for sitting in outdoor contemplation.  Whatever the case, spend some time honoring the richness of the natural world that surrounds us. Through this honoring, we become aware that life on this planet is indeed abundant and good.
"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."
