:: Starting the Day with Gentleness
:: The Rewards of Gentleness
Dear friends
The more I work with people, the more I understand the need for gentleness in our world.  We in the northeast are a busy, lonesome people. We could stand more gentleness -- more time for sitting on the soft grass, more time for kind words and slow driving, for drinking tea and walking tenderly through the woods.

When we allow our gentleness to emerge, we can taste life's sweetness a little more palpably.

With all due lightness of being,

Starting the Day with Gentleness

Before getting out of bed in the morning, tune into the breath.  Notice the steady pace of the breath of the just-waking state.  Take a moment to honor how it is that your body knows how to rest when it needs rest.

Notice your room, how sweet it is to have a room for sleeping in and to have special things you can call your own.

Let thoughts of worry or concern merge with a greater thought -- that gentleness is being called upon, gentleness in all circumstances, gentleness toward the self, gentleness toward others.  Let the first words that you speak for the day be words of kindness.

The Rewards of Gentleness:  Lessons from the Deer

Yesterday, I re-visited a local field, where dog walkers and raccoons take turns hanging out.  My jacket was too light for the weather, but my feet were glad to make contact with the uneven grasses.

Despite the cold wind, I was walking quietly, wanting to disappear into this bit of wild.  But no more than fifty steps forward, I startled three deer who went bounding through a grove of trees.  Their white tails waved back and forth as they ran.

I see deer as ambassadors of gentleness in this busy suburb.  They remind us to honor the delicate web of life that surrounds and sustains us, often despite our human ways.  Their stillness and grace are free gifts we receive every day.

Going more slowly on my walk now, around a bend, I came upon the deer again.  This time, the large doe in the group stood, watching me, maybe assessing my scent.  They bounded away again.

There is a direct relationship between gentleness and delight.  Honoring the delicacy of the web of life, we see how profoundly sweet it is that we are not alone -- that we are here as interdependent beings along with the deer, and the grass and the purple-gray sky.  We are connected, just as intricately as we are connected to our breath.

As I rounded another corner in my walk, I came upon the deer again.  I almost laughed at how our paths could not seem to diverge.  As their tails waved good-bye through the pines once again, I thanked them.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control -- Galatians
