FEATURED TO-DO: BLACK WORLD CINEMA - DESERT FLOWER
SUNSPOTS: CIRQUE DU SOLEIL'S(!) "OVO"!
TO-DOS!!!

Greetings, Sophisticate!

What an exciting week we have coming up! It is definitely full-throttle summer fest time!

SummerDance opens today with Funkadesi - what a way to kick things off!  Cool groups perform all weekend and every Thursday through Sunday until September 18th (and Wednesdays at neighborhood parks).  View the entire schedule!

Chicago Colombian Music Festival continues with Grupo Rebolu (who you'll also find at SummerDance this weekend!), parties and more!

*  I know a whole lotta folks are looking forward to the Chosen Few's 21st Annual House Music Picnic! This picnic definitely has the feel of a family reunion as original househeads (mostly 40+) come together with the original DJs (who made all the magic happen) to recreate the sweaty, funky vibe that everyone loved back in the warehouse days.  This older crowd knows how to behave, and the younger ones who follow house music also follow "the pack" rules! (Okay - I've been watching too much of The Dog Whisperer!  But, the point is: it's not a rowdy scene!)

DuSable Museum's 37th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival has really blossomed over the years and has grown from a sleepy l'il fest to one that's vibrant and filled with music and entertainment.  The hallmark of this neighborhood fest is that you won't find a bunch of vendors with flea-market style knockoff shades, belts, purses and bootleg recordings.  No-sir-ee!  Count on hand crafted goods and original works of art!  And - it's free!!!  So, please make a donation!

*  I used to refer to Chicago Folk and Roots Festival as the "hippie-fest" 'cuz it had a real tie-dye kinda vibe.  However, this year you'll find your ears filled with Colombian music (because performers from the Chicago Colombian Music Festival will be there), world music, Latin music and more!  It should be a great time in a beautiful park (my kinda fest!)!

*  Take a ride out to the 'burbs for the Jazz Fest Glen Ellyn featuring Orbert Davis!  Orbert, alone, will make it worth the drive!

Carmen Stokes, Brian McKnight, Ramsey Lewis, AACM Great Black Music Ensemble, Jazz In the Grazz, Movies In the Parks . . .  So much to highlight, so little time - so be sure to click through the links in the To-Dos section below for details on each of the To-Dos!  Whatever you decide To-Do, I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

FEATURED TO-DO: BLACK WORLD CINEMA - DESERT FLOWER

Black World Cinema: Desert Flower

SUNSPOTS: CIRQUE DU SOLEIL'S(!) "OVO"!
Ovo!Ovo - Magical and Breathtaking!!!

My introduction to Cirque du Soleil came several years ago through Bravo TV.  I found myself on the edge of my bed, hand clasped across my mouth - alternating with gasps of disbelief!  But, to see any Cirque du Soleil performance live is simply a mesmerizing and breathtaking experience - and, Ovo does not disappoint!

Ovo is set in a magical and exciting world of delightful and breathtaking adventures!  The costumes are imaginative and surreal, wonderfully creating the ecosystem that lives beneath our feet.  The live music and vocals (a hallmark of Cirque du Soleil) add even more texture and melodrama to this world into which we peek.

You'll never look at a climbing wall the same way after you see  "Crickets" - an amazing piece of choreographed acrobatics!!

FunkadesiSummerDance: Funkadesi

OPENING NIGHT!!

The rhythms of Indian Ragas and Reggae have striking similarities, while the Latin, African and contemporary funk that's spicing this one-sound, many-voices stew fits the all-world mélange to a tee.

Funkadesi proudly hails from Chicago, representing the diverse multi-ethnic communities within the city. What distinguishes Funkadesi as a group is each band member's unique and uncompromised cultural/musical contribution merging to create one unifying sound and vision. With their not-to-be-missed live shows and visible racial and musical diversity, the band is ideally suited for festivals, nightclubs, world music concerts, weddings and commitment ceremonies, corporate events, as well children's programs. Funkadesi's one-world sound, roots-watering vision, and positive vibe make the band a unique and compelling musical force.

Sunday, July 10th

DuSable Museum's 37th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival f/ Kindred the Family Soul

This year the Festival "Goes Back To Our Roots," featuring original works of art and crafts taking center stage. The Festival returns to being a showcase for local artists, a juried exhibition of fine art and unique crafted work which features artists working in traditional, ethnic and experimental fine arts and crafts that relate to African American themes, identity, history and culture and underscores the Museum's mission of preserving the history and culture of the African American experience. The Festival also returns to its customary date of occurring the second weekend in July and to the practice of showcasing original works of art, by fine artists ONLY. Absolutely no retail or market-place type vendors will be allowed to participate.

Soleil's Take: This Fest has really grown over the years and has definitely become more dynamic! If you're over the flea market Fests, oversaturated with knock-off purses, belts, shades and bootleg CDs/DVDs, you'll find at Arts & Crafts Festival a refreshing change of pace!

Jazzin' at the Shedd - Detour JazFunk

Detour JazFunk, Chicago's preeminent contemporary jazz quartet. They take their listeners on a journey off the well worn path of those artists considered to be today's cutting edge "smooth jazz," by adding a touch of genuine old school funk and soul into their mix. Detour embarks on a musical voyage that offers something fresh, yet familiar to every aspect of your musical palette . . . not just for the jazz lover in you.

Soleil's Take:  Detour JazFunk is one of my faves and this will definitely be a funky good time! Enjoy the sounds on the Shedd's terrace, overlooking the City skyline. Children are welcome and you'll find a mix of locals and tourists. Get there early because it can get crowded! View the entire Jazzin' at the Shedd schedule!
