FEATURED TO-DO: PORGY & BESS - $10 OFF!
TO-DOS!
ONGOING TO-DOS!

Greetings Sophisticate!

Black History Month is coming to a close, but at www.so-LAZE.com we celebrate African and African-American history year-round!!! Click on through the headline links for To-Dos included within this To-DosLetter, but be sure to visit our website for a full picture of what's going on.  In fact, thanks to the support of my full-time (hallelujah) assistant, Karen Roper, we've now got so many To-Dos that we now have to break the website down into more manageable pieces!  Stay tuned for updates as we begin to revamp the website, and if you have any comments or suggestions, I'd love to hear from you.

We've got more ticket giveaways coming up for Alvin Ailey and for Sketches of Blue - An Orbert Davis Tribute to Miles (part of the Miles Davis Festival), so be on the lookout for the announcements in our Solo E-mails.  Also, be sure to take advantage of the ticket discount offer from Court Theatre this week - $10 off tickets to Porgy & Bess! (Details below.)

Whatever you decide To-Do, make it a fabulous week!

Welcome Winter and Goodbye, Winter Whiners!

I am so tired of people whining about winter!  Everybody knows a few Winter Whiners.  They're the ones who can hardly make it to the first official day of winter without complaining:  "It's cold!"  Wah, wah, wah.  "I can't wait 'til spring."  Wah, wah, wah.  If that sounds like you, what you need is a fresh perspective on the joys of the season from a relocated So Cal Gal, so I'ma bring it to ya!  The most important thing is to not focus on the absence of sun and outdoor warmth.  Winter brings its own set of unique opportunities - here are a few of them!  Read the rest of this post . . .

Looking for more To-Do?

Visit www.so-LAZE.com for details about a ton of upcoming To-Dos (e.g., location, ticket and artist links, discount codes) and to use advanced calendar features, such as e-mail or text reminders and to add To-Dos to your personal calendar!  To-Dos are added daily, so be sure to visit www.so-LAZE.com for the most current listings!

(Note that, generally speaking, the "To-Do" description is either provided by the event host or copied and pasted from the cited website.  Sometimes we have to lend 'em a hand, but I just don't want you to think someone over here has time to write all that stuff!  Also, we suggest that you either click or call ahead to confirm no changes!!)

Something About Oscar Brown Jr. - A One Man Show by Morris Gearring w/ Nikki Giovanni

To-Do:  Come experience an evening getting to know the works of Oscar Brown performed by Morris Gearring, and Koco Brunson's Quartet w/ Special Guests Maggie Brown and Nikki Giovanni.  Discover the music, poetry, and social commentary of Oscar Brown Jr. through the eyes of his student, friend and protégée Morris Gearring.  Through personal insights, stories and performing his music and prose with some of Oscar's original band members, Morris illustrates the master lyricist, social commentator, and black advocate that Oscar Brown Jr was. In keeping true to his vision, Morris Gearring bridges the divide between the past and future that helps us to experience the present as only Oscar Brown Jr. could see it.

The Renaissance Collaborative 17th Annual Friend-Raiser Breakfast

To-Do:  Help Support TRC by joining us for our annual Friend-Raiser Breakfast!  We are calling all past Wabash YMCA members and participants, as well as TRC residents and supporters to upload pictures and historical narratives about their experiences at the Wabash YMCA and the Renaissance Apartments. Upload your pics and stories right to our FaceBook page.

Featuring Dr. Timuel Black and other speakers who will be presenting a history of the Wabash YMCA and The Renaissance Collaborative Inc.

Soleil's Take:  The Wabash YMCA, (now known as the Renaissance Apartments and Fitness for Life Center and owned by The Renaissance Collaborative ("TRC")) is located in the heart of "Bronzeville." This historic building has had close ties to the community from its inception. The former Wabash Y was the birth place for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and three friends, and was thereafter known as the birth place of Black History Month. Each year, in recognition of the historic role that the "Wabash Y" has played in the Bronzeville community, TRC engages the community in a topic of timely significance at its "Friendraiser" breakfast - only $10 per ticket!

Price:  $10
