Something About Oscar Brown Jr. - A One Man Show by Morris Gearring w/ Nikki Giovanni
To-Do: Come experience an evening getting to know the works of Oscar Brown performed by Morris Gearring, and Koco Brunson's Quartet w/ Special Guests Maggie Brown and Nikki Giovanni. Discover the music, poetry, and social commentary of Oscar Brown Jr. through the eyes of his student, friend and protégée Morris Gearring. Through personal insights, stories and performing his music and prose with some of Oscar's original band members, Morris illustrates the master lyricist, social commentator, and black advocate that Oscar Brown Jr was. The Renaissance Collaborative 17th Annual Friend-Raiser Breakfast
To-Do: Help Support TRC by joining us for our annual Friend-Raiser Breakfast! We are calling all past Wabash YMCA members and participants, as well as TRC residents and supporters to upload pictures and historical narratives about their experiences at the Wabash YMCA and the Renaissance Apartments. Upload your pics and stories right to our FaceBook page.
Featuring Dr. Timuel Black and other speakers who will be presenting a history of the Wabash YMCA and The Renaissance Collaborative Inc.
Soleil's Take: The Wabash YMCA, (now known as the Renaissance Apartments and Fitness for Life Center and owned by The Renaissance Collaborative ("TRC")) is located in the heart of "Bronzeville." This historic building has had close ties to the community from its inception. The former Wabash Y was the birth place for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and three friends, and was thereafter known as the birth place of Black History Month. Each year, in recognition of the historic role that the "Wabash Y" has played in the Bronzeville community, TRC engages the community in a topic of timely significance at its "Friendraiser" breakfast - only $10 per ticket!
