Me'Shell Ndegeocello

Two sets - 7pm and 10pm

To-Do!With special guest Helen Money, Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up trying to explain herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearsome bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With that, she has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers, and the dedication of her diverse, unclassifiable fans. Devil's Halo, Meshell's 8th album and her first for Mercer Street, harkens back to the way records used to be made: no click track or electronic synthetics, with a focus on musicianship and live band energy. Meshell feels that Devil's Halo represents a return to a place that she truly appreciates, music that is created and performed by people's hands. Produced by Meshell and guitarist Chris Bruce, and influenced by a wide breadth of sounds - from The Human League to Wu Tang to Yes - Devil's Halo displays Meshell's vocals and diversity throughout.

African Jubilee Film Festival: Drum

To-Do!: Drum, 94 mins, 2004. Country: South Africa, Director: Zola Maseko

Drum is a film based on the life and times of South African investigative journalist Henry Nxumalo, who worked for the popular Drum magazine, known as "the first black lifestyle magazine in Africa." The film is the first feature film of South African filmmaker Zola Maseko, and deals with the issues of apartheid and the forced removal of residents from Sophiatown during the 1950s. Like Harlem in New York and Bronzevlle in Chicago, Sophiatown was a center of Black South African culture and politics, a fact that is well reflected in this film. Discussant: Representative from the South African Consulate

Soleil's Take: Floyd Webb, one of the curators has been doing a fantastic job with selections for the Black World Cinema series at ICE Theaters, so you can expect this series to be equally interesting! View more African Jubilee Film Festival dates!

CIFF/Black Perspectives: The Middle of the World

To-Do!: Original Title: La mitad del mundo, Director: Jaime Ruiz Ibáñez, Mexico, Spanish with subtitles, Mentally challenged Mingo, 25 years old and still living with his mother, regards the world around him with childlike enthusiasm, especially the world of women. After a sexual awakening, he becomes a guileless Casanova in his small town, to the resentment and unease of its male inhabitants. Part parable, part sexy romp, The Middle of the World portrays the chain of events that occurs when sexual and small-town politics collide.

Miscellaneous Info: When we held the first Chicago International Film Festival in 1964, we couldn't have imagined where the medium of film was headed. Today, you can have a film delivered straight to your door. You can download a film to your cell phone or stream it on your computer screen. Call us old school, but we still love settling into a dark theater full of people to watch that giant screen come alive with pictures of far-off lands. Each year we travel the world to find the films we think will move you, films that show us what's happening on every continent and right in our own backyards. Nothing quite compares to that electrifying sense of discovery you get when you see something fresh and exciting for the first time on the big screen. We've brought you the first feature films by world-renowned directors like Martin Scorsese, Peter Weir, Mike Leigh, Gregory Nava, Bertrand Tavernier, Jan Troell, Joe Swanberg, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and many more. This year we have more than 150 films from 50 countries., View the complete schedule!

ONGOING TO-DOS!

The following To-Dos take place on a recurring schedule or extended basis.

Night & Day - Shines Bright and Delights!

Written by Tom Stoppard
Directed by James Bohnen

Night and Day is a refreshingly funny play set in post-Colonial Africa. After I got past the heavy English poppy-cock, which in my opinion is the equivalent of Ebonics, I really enjoyed this gripping and intelligent story about free speech and the press.

Set in a fictional African country on the verge of Civil War and run by a paranoid Idi Amin-esque type President, the story opens with a thrilling dream sequence where a photographer, George Guthrie (Jeff Cummings) is under attack by a helicopter hovering above and mistaking him for the enemy. This was a great way to set-up the debate that rages throughout this swift moving tale. [more]
