Yanga Fest
To-Do!: The Festival is a showcase for local and national artists. A juried exhibition of fine art and uniquely crafted work which feature artists working in traditional, ethnic and experimental fine arts and crafts that relate to African-American themes, identity, history and culture. Additionally, this outdoor celebration underscores the Museum's mission of preserving and interpreting the history and culture of the African-American experience. Dance Africa Chicago will be performing on Saturday, as well as there will be a special opening celebration for the exhibition - "African Presence in Mexico".
Soleil's Take: I'm looking forward to seeing what changes will come with this newly renamed festival under the guidance of Dr. Carol Adams, the museum's new executive director! Historically, this is has definitely one of the more subdued and mellow Washington Park festivals. There may be some performances, perhaps a little entertainment, but since it's free, you can certainly afford to come and chill out for a minute. I'll admit that I'm biased though - put me in the park around some black folk with some incense wafting through the air and it's all good!
