NEW TO-DOS
Greetings Sophisticate!

Stephanie - just havin' fun!

AOL Says:  Whoooa - There's Way Too Much To-Do!

Last week (and I suppose in several other weeks, too, but someone just brought it to my attention), AOL said:  "Hold up!  Wait a minute!  There's way too much To-Do in that To-DosLetter - we cain't han'lit!!!  We can only send this out as a .zip file!"  Well, that could be kinda scary and frustrating to receive, as one Sophisticate let me know, in no uncertain terms:

"I COULD NOT OPEN THIS FILE - NOTHING WORKED. PLEASE ADVISE IF YOU EXPECT ME TO CONTINUE SUBSCRIBING."

After some troubleshooting and internet searching, I discovered that AOL could not handle the sheer volume of festivals, live music, theater, film, cooking classes, networking, black tie, community and many other diverse To-Dos!  Their system was overwhelmed by the enticing descriptions, the reviews, the compelling images . . . and so many To-Dos - and that To-DosLetter didn't even include the "booty" parties!!!

Well, perhaps you're a bit overwhelmed, too.  (I know I am when I have to put these To-DosLetters together!).  In solidarity with the 10% of Sophisticates who use AOL (and in support of me getting some sleep (or play!) on Wednesday nights), this and future To-DosLetters will only contain headline listings of upcoming To-Dos, with photos of some featured To-Dos sprinkled in here and there.  Each headline link will lead to detailed information about the To-Do.  If you want to see the images with a summary listing of To-Dos as you're accustomed to seeing, just click on any of the "To-Do" links that I've sprinkled liberally throughout this message!

Congratulations to Shakti, winner of FOUR weekend passes to the African Festival of the Arts, coming up from September 3 - 6, 2010!  Congratulations also go out to LorRenne, winner of a pair of tickets to Greenetree Productions' Blues for an Alabama Sky!  The show opens this Friday - be on the lookout for our review!

Do not give up on the good weather - there is still plenty To-Do!  SummerDance continues through Sunday; Taste of Greece is this weekend, as is the Bucktown Arts Fest, Jazz In the Alley and DuSable Museum's Yanga Fest (f/k/a Arts & Crafts Festival); and The Indie Designer Mart continues.

Whatever you decide To-Do, make it a fabulous weekend!

 Stephanie!

Yanga Fest

To-Do!: The Festival is a showcase for local and national artists. A juried exhibition of fine art and uniquely crafted work which feature artists working in traditional, ethnic and experimental fine arts and crafts that relate to African-American themes, identity, history and culture. Additionally, this outdoor celebration underscores the Museum's mission of preserving and interpreting the history and culture of the African-American experience. Dance Africa Chicago will be performing on Saturday, as well as there will be a special opening celebration for the exhibition - "African Presence in Mexico".

Soleil's Take: I'm looking forward to seeing what changes will come with this newly renamed festival under the guidance of Dr. Carol Adams, the museum's new executive director! Historically, this is has definitely one of the more subdued and mellow Washington Park festivals. There may be some performances, perhaps a little entertainment, but since it's free, you can certainly afford to come and chill out for a minute. I'll admit that I'm biased though - put me in the park around some black folk with some incense wafting through the air and it's all good!
