Thursday, August 19, 2010, 6 - 9:30pm

To-Do!: Kabile Traditional Wedding Band was formed in 1978 and became one of the most popular bands in Thrace. Made In Chicago: Django - A Celebration

Thursday, August 19, 2010, 6:30 - 9pm

To-Do!Featuring Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan, Belgian-born Gypsy jazz guitarist, Jean "Django" Reinhardt revolutionized the way people think about the guitar and helped pioneer a hybrid form of jazz, known for its hot grooves. To mark his centennial birthday, Alfonso Ponticelli along with guests Ensemble Zaiti from France and Stephane Wrembel and Arturo Martinez from New York join Swing Gitan to tell Django's musical story and remind us why his style and sound reverberate throughout the jazz world today. Also featuring Tony Ballog, Beau Sample, Jason Miller, Howard Levy, Gerald Dowd, Pat Mallinger, Steve Gibons, Nicolae Feraru, Juliano Milo and Larry Bowen., Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan is Chicago's premier gypsy-jazz band.  The group plays the 1930s-style music of guitarist Django Reinhardt -- foot-tappin' swing played on acoustic instruments. It's a blend of the jubilant swing of early jazz with the feisty passion of gypsy music, plus a strong dose of guitar pyrotechnics and virtuosic improvisation.  Formed in 2001, Swing Gitan features bandleader Alfonso Ponticelli on lead guitar and a world-class lineup of musicians on violin, rhythm guitar and upright bass, with the occasional special guest. Over the years, they've played with many of the great contemporary gypsy-jazz players from around the world, including Bireli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Moreno, Angelo DeBarre and the Robin Nolan Trio.

Beau Barry

Thursday, August 19, 2010, 7pm - 12am

To-Do!: When I was 22 years old I studied yoga and mysticism with Goswami Kriyamanda for a year. At the end of the year he asked us to have the courage to discover what we most wanted to do with our lives. Long story made short, I took up the saxophone.  I thought my vision of playing music was grand and romantic. It turns out that the reality of playing is more challenging, multi-faceted and exciting that any imagining. Music, to me is not just about music. Music is about passion, dedication and ecstasy. The Beau Barry Quartet plays music ranging from Ellington and Coltrane to originals. I believe jazz, by its nature, is not wed to any idiom. The guiding light to this music is improvisation. Of course nothing helps an improviser like a good song. Funky waltzes, ballads, blues, bossanova, etc. are all areas of interest. My greatest influence has been 20 years playing on the streets of Chicago. Alone, or with five piece drum ensembles, the street is where I found my own sound.

Soleil's TakeView our select Ravinia schedule!
Price: $45, Reserved; Lawn, $16 (Advance), $21 (at Gate)
Venue Info: Ravinia is a spot that must be visited at least once each season. The parkgrounds are absolutely beautiful and nothing beats a lazy summer afternoon, turned to balmy evening under the stars, sprawled out on a blanket. (Or lawn chair for those of you who prefer to remain off the ground.) Purchase lawn seats or get reserve seats and start your evening on the lawn. Wine and a reasonable variety of tasty treats, meals and sweets are available for purchase and lawn chairs available for rent. But, it's so much fun to pack up a picnic basket, some candles (citronella :) ) and incense - do it your way!, Drive and face the mass exodus after the show. The Metra is the easiest way to get there and the last train leaves about 30 minutes after the show. Coming in, you'll usually find some lively, informal pre-parties on each car. And, what - people actually talking to strangers and exchanging food and drink on the train and at the park, rather than isolating themselves behind their cell phones or I-pods? Yes, people - it happens. And it's happenING - so get yourself out there!

Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle. Soleil's Take: Movies in the Park ("MIP") is a low-key, family-friendly alternative to the Outdoor Film Festival (which, this year, appears to have fallen victim to budget cuts). At MIP, you'll find plenty of room to spread out and barbeque. Amble on in at your leisure and you'll still find room to enjoy the flick. Bring the kids, bring the dog and enjoy the summer evening! Jeb Bishop Trio

Since flinging himself into the scene early in 1993, Bishop has secured a crucial place in the music's ecosystem, moving steadily and dedicatedly from ubiquitous supportive sideman to loader and instigator. Jeb Bishop Trio is the 36-year-old's debut at the helm of a band, a declaration of independence and as a bold a statement as anyone could need of the presence of his muse. But even seem from outside the trajectory of the trombonist's blooming career, the record is no less than an opening volley by one of the city's most exciting, fully-developed working units. Proficient on all saxophones, with a preference to the Alto sax, Reid has been described as a cross between David Sanborn and the late sax genius Art Porter, but with his own distinct style. He has performed with several entertainment greats. His saxophone styling has afforded him tremendous opportunities in various cities throughout the United States as well as select cities in Mexico, Asia, Canada, Europe and Jamaica. Reids solo and group performances with various bands, including his own fittingly coined In the Company of Reid, have delighted audiences at a multitude of social galas, venues and events.

Movies in the Parks: The Wiz

Saturday, August 21, 2010, 8 - 10pm

To-Do!: The Wiz was adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. The film follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy schoolteacher from Harlem, New York who finds herself magically transported to the wonderland of Oz, which resembles a fantasy version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, Dorothy travels through the world of Oz to seek an audience with the mysterious "Wiz", who they say has the power to take her home.

I've selected a few listings to include in the To-Dos, but visit the Chicago Park District website for MIP dates in a park near you!

Niki Mitchell's Ice And Crystals Quartet & The Josh Abrams Quartet

Sunday, August 22, 2010, 4 - 9pm

To-Do!: Nicole Mitchell has been noted as "a compelling improviser of wit, determination, positivity, and tremendous talent . . . on her way to becoming one of the greatest living flutists in jazz," (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader). A creative flutist, composer and bandleader, Mitchell placed first as Downbeat magazine's "Rising Star Flutist 2005-2009, was awarded "Jazz Flutist of the Year 2008"by the Jazz Journalist Association and ""Chicagoan of the Year 2006" by the Chicago Tribune. The founder of the critically acclaimed Black Earth Ensemble and Black Earth Strings, Mitchell's compositions reach across sound worlds, integrating new ideas with moments in the legacy of jazz, gospel, pop, and African percussion to create a fascinating synthesis of "postmodern jazz." With her ensembles, as a featured flutist, and as a music educator, Mitchell has been a highlight at art venues, festivals throughout Europe, the U.S. and Canada.

Josh Abrams' quartet embodies a remarkable geographic cross section of today's free music. Bassist Joshua Abrams might best be known for his work with Town and Country, but his ubiquity in Chicago's improvised music scene proves he's one of the most hard-working, creative, and prolific bass players around. He's also a member of the trio Sticks and Stones with Mantana Roberts and Chad Taylor. On any give night, there's a good chance you'll find Abrams playing in one of Chicago's famous jazz nooks.

To-Do!: 2009, Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano, USA, 86 min., The 1964 murders of three civil rights workers in Neshoba County, Mississippi, shocked the world, but no one was held accountable for over 40 years. In 2005, a coalition of black and white residents succeeded in bringing to trial Edgar Ray Killen, the Klansman who allegedly instigated the murders. Killen, still staunchly racist and confident of exoneration, cooperated with the makers of this compelling documentary, which avoids simplistic self-righteousness in favor of troubling questions about racial reconciliation and still-unredressed injustices. Fred Anderson Tribute with Tatsu Aoki

Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 5:30 - 8pm

To-Do!: Despite being an "old school" musician in terms of grounding and early influences, Fred Anderson was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and headed several AACM groups in the '60s. Anderson had formally studied music theory and was strongly influenced by Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Gene Ammons. He reflected that training throughout his career, always having a full, huge tone and being a capable blues and ballad stylist. But he also absorbed the new ideas pioneered by Ornette Coleman and other free theorists; it was this ability to merge old and new that made Anderson a seminal figure among Chicago musicians in the '60s.

Her journey continued at Indiana University, where she was immersed in formal music education, and her insatiable hunger for vocal harmony and arranging was fed through the soul food of Sojourner, the all women's gospel group that spread the word from southern Indiana all the way to Harlem. Bit by the rock bug, Sarah put school on the shelf to play synth with what would be deemed "nightmare pop" group The Nods as well as dreamy indie band Secret Girl.

Movies in the Parks: The Wiz

Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 7:45 - 9:45pm

To-Do!: The Wiz was adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. The film follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy schoolteacher from Harlem, New York who finds herself magically transported to the wonderland of Oz, which resembles a fantasy version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, Dorothy travels through the world of Oz to seek an audience with the mysterious "Wiz", who they say has the power to take her home.

I've selected a few listings to include in the To-Dos, but visit the Chicago Park District website for MIP dates in a park near you!

Inspired by such greats as Peggy Lee, Chris Connor, Lucy Ann Polk, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, and Beverly Kenney (just to name a few!), she opts for a straightforward swinging delivery with an emphasis on feeling. Relying only on the deep belief in the music she sings, her approach is simple and without affectation. Her warm intimate sound has just a touch of breathiness. Petra is a true romantic and the timeless music of the Great American Songbook is what inspires her creatively.
