NEW TO-DOS
ONGOING TO-DOS!
Greetings Sophisticate!

Stephanie - just havin' fun!

So What are You Going To-Do?

Lately, I've been hearing from people lamenting the passage of Summer.  True: time passes quickly.  True also:  So you might has well have a good time!  "Made In Chicago: World Class Jazz" is kicking off tonight in Millennium Park!  Make the most of your lawn experience - get tips here.  I am positively thrilled about a new music series that our beloved HotHouse is launching this Saturday.  (Find out more in Featured To-Do below.) Also coming up (and posted in New To-Dos below), Ghana Fest, SummerDance at 63rd Street Beach, Universal Jazz Alley and so much more!!!

Maybe you're a little stuck and don't quite know what To-Do.  You tell yourself:  "There's too much To-Do!! How can I possibly decide?!?!  Well, feast your eyes on some of these
Sun Spots and get a healthy dose of input from yours truly!

WAR - Live in Hyde Park!
WAR - What is it good for?
Sun Spots: War with Peace at Celebrate Hyde Park

Making Peace and Enjoying War

Me thinks the Inaugural "Celebrate Hyde Park" drew a larger crowd than anticipated!  I got there just as War was taking the stage and 53rd Street was packed with people funneling down to the stage at Blackstone!   Marketing for this To-Do seems to have been done the old-fashioned way - maybe a couple of radio spots and locally posted fliers.  When I first got word of it (by mouth), I thought "War?  Hunh?"  But, I quickly changed that tune to "War - HUH:  what is it good for?"  It was good for an absolutely peaceful, beautiful, Sunday afternoon! Looking for Something To-Do on Mondays?  Look No Further!

Monday evening was filled with great music at the Museum Shores Yacht Club with Musician's Network MECCA!  MNM is a "network of Musicians Economically Conscious Creative Association,  committed to the sharing of resources in the music industry."  On Mondays, they bring together some of Chicago's best jazz musicians at this free To-Do.

More Sun Spots will be coming your way as I get out (with an actual camera soon!) and explore more To-Dos in this fair city!

Finally - I ask you to please spread the word about Soleil's To-Dos with your friends, family and colleagues!  I'm doing a ticket giveaway and all new subcriptions received by 4pm on Friday will be entered to win one of two pairs of tickets to see "Herbert III" and "Contribution" and one of two pairs of tickets to see Guide for the Perplexed!  Forward to a Friend

Whatever you decide To-Do, make it a fabulous weekend!

 Stephanie!

(Brazilian/Indian/Jazz)
the World Undergroud is a new monthly series that joins up-and-coming regional artists with underground legends who established many of the cultural scenes we enjoy today.  Local restaurants will cater authentic cuisine from the countries celebrated.

In the series debut, the World Underground joins talents of rising vocalist, composer & lyricist Satya with one of Chicago's most accomplished cultural pioneers DJ Joe Bryl. Satya masterfully unites Brazilian & Indian influences over Jazz foundations. Satya recently released her solo album debut and sings in Hindi, Portuguese & English - three languages that broadly represent the history of her native Bombay. DJ Joe Bryl was named Chicago's "Most Interesting DJ" by Chicago Tribune. Joe has long pushed the envelope on international sounds and was an original partner in the creation of HotHouse. He was also involved in early days of Funky Buddha Lounge, worked as artistic director at Sonotheque, and most recently began curating at The Shrine.

Both Satya & DJ Joe Bryl have an affinity for the sounds of Brazil and a desire to expand common perceptions on musical norms. They are intimately involved in Chicago's music scene and will undoubtedly help shape the cultural road ahead.

THEATER REVIEW:  AIDA;  "HERBERT III" AND "CONTRIBUTION"

"Herbert III" and "Contribution": A Dichotomy
In One Act

On Thursday July 22, 2010 I had the pleasure of seeing two one act plays performed at eta Theater. In light of the week in political idiocy these two plays were timely. Both plots were rooted in the Civil Rights Movement and frankly it helped me to focus and affiliate with the dramatic events of the day. To be honest one play was better than the other.  [more]

Aida Has Captured My Heart

Ooh Aida, Aida, Aida! Now I understand how Harpo felt about Sophie in The Color PurpleAida, a Bailiwick Chicago production, was something special to see.  It's been a long time since I was thoroughly immersed, from the beginning, in a relationship with the most wonderful woman in the world.  And Aida is that woman and I'm not ashamed to say that my nose is wide open!  Where can I begin?

For starters, Aida opens with a rousing, upbeat number where Princess Amneris (Adriana Parson) wrestled my affections as she sings so melodiously that the hairs on the knap of your neck will stand  up at attention.  It is this opening number that sets up everyone in the audience for the kill throughout this play.  It gets better as time goes on and we are introduced to the stars of this production.  [more]

Michael Manson

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6 - 9pm

To-Do!: For Michael Manson the bottom line has always been great music. Since he first picked up a guitar (not a bass), he has moved persistently from strength to strength, one association leading inevitably to another in a career that has brought him front and center with the most esteemed names in jazz, gospel, R&B, rock and pop. Manson's uniquely lyrical voice has its roots in Chicago, Illinois. For Michael Manson, love of musical communication, exploration, collaboration and celebration is clearly what it's all about. This sophomore release reflects Manson's unabating passion with joy and inspired artistry, "There are musical conversations that are intriguing and I hope the audience shares in that. But it is just great for musicians to communicate in that way. That's the joy of music. To make great music like that every night, that's what it's all about."

SummerDance: Ethnic Dance Chicago f/ Balalaika Klezmer Band

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6 - 9:30pm

To-Do!: Klezmer is a musical tradition which parallels Hasidic and Ashkenazic Judaism. Around the 15th century, a tradition of secular Jewish music was developed by musicians called klezmorim or kleyzmurim. Tum Balalaika Band have entertained Chicagoans with the traditions of this music for over 17 years.

Soleil's Take: The dance floor has gotten a little tight as this To-Do has grown in popularity, but it's still a fun time! SummerDance has expanded to 63rd Street Beach, Navy Pier, Athletic Field Park and Humboldt Park Boathouse. The view is beautiful at each of the locations, so get out there - and don't be afraid to try a new style of music and dance!

Tortoise 2.0

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6:30 - 9pm

To-Do!: Tortoise is a Chicago based post-rock band known for their instrumental genre bending music that incorporates elements of Krautrock, dub, jazz, rock and experimental. Tortoise basically reinvented progressive-rock for the new millenium when they anchored their musical drifting to dub and jazz pillars. They were not only inspired by the historical rhythm sections of funk and dub, but they set out to obscure that legacy with a more far-reaching approach. On Tortoise (1994) each musician covered a lot of ground and alternated at different instruments, but basically this was a band founded on rhythm. In addition to their own recordings on the Thrill Jockey label, the band has contributed to albums by Bright Eyes and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. In 2004 they helped curate an edition of the legendary, All Tomorrow's Parties festival.

PJ Morton

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 7 - 11pm

To-Do!: When you are raised as a preacher's kid, the burden of expectation bestowed upon those labeled PK's can be overwhelming. For young, gifted and blessed musician, producer and entrepreneur PJ Morton, there were no such obstacles known as labels. The only expectation he conformed to was following his own heart and dreams to fully discover his gift and love for music. Over the years the accomplished New Orleans native set himself apart to create melodic stories of love and life as he worked with India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Jermaine Dupri, Monica and LL Cool J. Now with his own fifth album release on S.O.S. Music entitled Walk Alone, PJ continues to share his heart, experiences and stories with the masses., Now with four albums and multiple collaborations under his belt, his company Song Of Solomon (S.O.S.) Music is a true representation of PJ's creative journey. "Music is the focus and everything else comes from that. Song of Solomon in the Bible are loves songs from a believer. I want to represent that and take music back because there's not a platform for artists that are believers. Either you have to be gospel or whatever else you are labeled."

Before They Die - Remembering the Tulsa Race Riots

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 7 - 10pm

To-Do!: Mportant Films is dedicated to "Keeping Our Stories Alive," African American history that otherwise might not be told. "Before They Die" our first major documentary, produced in conjunction with Tulsa Virtual Media Partners, LLC, is focused on telling the story of the survivors of the 1921 Tusla Race Riot in their quest for justice and to let the world know about their story. The documentary follows the Survivors, and their legal team headed by Professor Charles Ogletree, through the court system all the way to the Supreme Court and on to the US Congress., Before there was 9/11, before there was Oklahoma City, before there was the internment of the Japanese Americans during World Word II, before there was Rosewood (Florida), there was the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. The Tulsa Race Riot Survivors have survived all of this history, but have yet to be compensated for what they lost in the riots. They are still seeking justice Before They Die.

Global Grooves: Vertikal with Uncle Butta

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 8 - 11:45pm

To-Do!: Founded by Chicago guitarist Anthony Allamandola, Vertikal is a 9-piece group bridging the gap between hip-hop and jazz, drawing influence from funk, soul, latin, rock, and blues. Their live shows are dynamic, fusing soulful female vocals and hip-hop lyricism with DJ tracks, horn hits, and a grooving rhythm section. Expect to hear anything from rocksteady reggae rhythms and soothing vocal ballads to funky deep house grooves--and everything in between. Vertikal is creating a stir in Chicago's live music scene, drawing a diverse following that grows larger by the show. VertiKal has performed for capacity crowds at the Double Door and the Metro. In 2007, they were voted audience favorite at the Emergenza national final, with Lorin Cohen and [former vocalist] Amanda Shane earning "best bass player" and "best vocalist" nods!

Organic Groov: Bradley Leighton

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 8pm - 1am

To-Do!: Bradley Leighton brings a unique and powerful sound to flute. His style of swing evolved from listening to the big, hi-octane bands of Kenton, Herman and Ferguson in the 60's-70's. His funkiness derives from years of listening to Tower of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Brecker Brothers and countless other soul/R&B acts. He brings a fire and flair not usually heard nor expected from a flutist. Bradley has performed across the US and Asia, as both sideman and bandleader, for over 25 years.  In addition to recording and performing, Bradley Leighton has continued to share his knowledge and enthusiasm of music as a clinician and teacher. Besides private lessons, he leads workshops for musicians of all skill levels, including, "Jazz Improvisation for the Classically Trained Flutist," and "Music For Life - Improvisation for the Adult Amateur Musician."

Marquis Hill Blacktet

Thursday, July 29, 2010, 8:30pm - 12:30am

To-Do!: Marquis Hill: I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in a single parent home. I began playing the drums in the 4th grade, and then switched to trumpet in the 5th grade after hearing my older cousin practice for hours above my room. Mrs. Diane Ellis then began teaching me the fundamentals of the trumpet at Dixon Elementary school. At my 8th grade graduation she placed a Dizzy Gillespie CD in his hand and since then I have been trying my best to keep the tradition of jazz alive in his playing.  I am a strong believer that music can change the lives of children all over the world just as it has changed mine.

Greg Spero Band

Friday, July 30, 2010, 8pm - 2am
Saturday, July 31, 2010, 10pm - 4am

To-Do!: What can we expect from a musician who has three generations of Spero coursing through his bloodline? It was his father and grandfather who raised him in the tradition of true musicianship. But what we don't expect: abnormality. He's fearless to break from the established rules of music theory, truly wild in improvisational technique. Spero constantly pushes the boundaries onstage and offstage with his eccentric, signature style of playing. When you hear him experiment with jazz fusion onstage, you wonder, is this guy high or something? Think Jimmy Hendrix but on a keyboard. Spero's drug of choice: coffee. He's racked up so many points on his Starbucks card; he's one junkie who just can't live without java. Fans, be aware that a fresh batch of chocolate brownies will appease the budding jazz musician. This past year Spero has built a name for himself as a solo artist. Each performance is a revelation in the sporadic experiment of jazz fusion. Those hip to the music happenings in Chicago flock to Spero's performances.

Movies in the Parks: Guess Who's Coming To Dinner

Friday, July 30, 2010, 8:15 - 10:15pm

To-Do!: The film tells the story of Joanna "Joey" Drayton, a young White American woman who has had a whirlwind romance with Dr. John Prentice, an African American man she met while in Hawaii. The plot centers on Joanna's return to her liberal upper class American home in San Francisco, bringing her new fiancé to dinner to meet her parents, and the reaction of family and friends. The film depicts the discomfort of her parents as they try to accept their daughter's choice. It also touches on black-on-black racism when John is taken to task by his father and the household cook for his perceived presumption.

Soleil's Take: Movies in the Park ("MIP") is a low-key, family-friendly alternative to the Outdoor Film Festival (which, this year, appears to have fallen victim to budget cuts). At MIP, you'll find plenty of room to spread out and barbeque. Amble on in at your leisure and you'll still find room to enjoy the flick. Bring the kids, bring the dog and enjoy the summer evening! I've selected a few listings to include in the To-Dos, but visit the Chicago Park District website for MIP dates in a park near you!

To-Do!: A Night of Funk, Soul & Jazz in Chicago starring Marion Meadows: Saxophonist Marion Meadows began playing clarinet and studying classical music at eight years old. His passion for different types of music led him to appreciate numerous jazz musicians. He naturally gravitated to the soprano sax in his high school years, fortunately for the smooth jazz fans who have embraced his sweet and funky soprano sound over the last decade. Paul "Shilts" Weimar:, What do you get when you combine unforgettable hooks and atomic energy? You get a sound that is fresh, unique and totally Shilts. The former frontman for the funk-fortified Down to the Bone and groove jazz specialist, Shilts became the most visible and identifiable member of the UK jazz group.

(2) No outside concessions?!?! That kinda takes the "pic" (i.e., your choice) out of picnic-ing, doesn't it? Will I get out there and find $6 hotdogs and a $17 glass of white zinfandel and a $3 can of RC Cola? (3) How come Ravinia is sooooo much cheaper and lets you bring your own stuff? (4) You can't bring your own chair - you must rent one there? Come on, now - we must be up to $75 already - just to be on the lawn!

The series joins up-and-coming regional artists with underground legends who established many of the cultural scenes we enjoy today. Local restaurants will also cater authentic cuisine from the countries represented each month., In the series debut, the World Underground joins the talents of rising vocalist, composer & lyricist Satya with one of Chicago's most accomplished cultural pioneers DJ Joe Bryl. Both artists have an affinity for the sounds of Brazil and a desire to expand common perceptions on musical norms. SATYA is a fresh and rising vocalist, composer, and lyricist who masterfully unites Brazilian & Indian influences over a Jazz foundation. Satya sings in Hindi, Portuguese and English - three languages that broadly represent the history of her native Bombay, India. Satya often plays with groups such as Las Guitarras de España, but recently released her solo debut, "Seven Blue Seas". Her music is influenced by her deep interest in the works of classic and contemporary Brazilian composers, songwriters and musicians of various genres, her love for the Portuguese language which she has been studying, as well as her time in Brazil. "Seven Blue Seas" pays homage to both her memories of India and Brazil.

Soleil's Take: Her music is simply gorgeous!! There is no way I'm going to miss this!

Mwata Bowden Ensemble

Saturday, July 31, 2010, 8:30pm - 12:30am

To-Do!: During the past several years, Mwata Bowden has gone beyond the stage of discovery into a genuine mastery. In addition to the obvious technical virtuosity he commands on baritone saxophone and clarinet, he has been able to put together ensembles that develop his ideas on a somewhat larger scale. In his Sound Spectrum and Tri-Tone ensembles, for instance, he has presented long and complex compositions that nevertheless prove accessible to the uninitiated listener., Above all, though the AACM remains the constant in his musical life. Bowden is presently Chairman of the AACM. "It's extremely important to the cultural community, because otherwise this information is lost, and the next generation doesn't have the advantages they need. The AACM preserves that information, and so it protects our future".
