Michael Manson
Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6 - 9pm
To-Do!: For Michael Manson the bottom line has always been great music. Since he first picked up a guitar (not a bass), he has moved persistently from strength to strength, one association leading inevitably to another in a career that has brought him front and center with the most esteemed names in jazz, gospel, R&B, rock and pop. Manson's uniquely lyrical voice has its roots in Chicago, Illinois. For Michael Manson, love of musical communication, exploration, collaboration and celebration is clearly what it's all about. This sophomore release reflects Manson's unabating passion with joy and inspired artistry, "There are musical conversations that are intriguing and I hope the audience shares in that. But it is just great for musicians to communicate in that way. That's the joy of music. To make great music like that every night, that's what it's all about."

Tortoise 2.0
Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6:30 - 9pm
To-Do!: Tortoise is a Chicago based post-rock band known for their instrumental genre bending music that incorporates elements of Krautrock, dub, jazz, rock and experimental. Tortoise basically reinvented progressive-rock for the new millenium when they anchored their musical drifting to dub and jazz pillars. They were not only inspired by the historical rhythm sections of funk and dub, but they set out to obscure that legacy with a more far-reaching approach. On Tortoise (1994) each musician covered a lot of ground and alternated at different instruments, but basically this was a band founded on rhythm. In addition to their own recordings on the Thrill Jockey label, the band has contributed to albums by Bright Eyes and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. In 2004 they helped curate an edition of the legendary, All Tomorrow's Parties festival.

PJ Morton
Thursday, July 29, 2010, 7 - 11pm
To-Do!: When you are raised as a preacher's kid, the burden of expectation bestowed upon those labeled PK's can be overwhelming. For young, gifted and blessed musician, producer and entrepreneur PJ Morton, there were no such obstacles known as labels. The only expectation he conformed to was following his own heart and dreams to fully discover his gift and love for music. Over the years the accomplished New Orleans native set himself apart to create melodic stories of love and life as he worked with India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Jermaine Dupri, Monica and LL Cool J. Now with his own fifth album release on S.O.S. Music entitled Walk Alone, PJ continues to share his heart, experiences and stories with the masses., Now with four albums and multiple collaborations under his belt, his company Song Of Solomon (S.O.S.) Music is a true representation of PJ's creative journey. "Music is the focus and everything else comes from that. Song of Solomon in the Bible are loves songs from a believer. I want to represent that and take music back because there's not a platform for artists that are believers. Either you have to be gospel or whatever else you are labeled."

Their live shows are dynamic, fusing soulful female vocals and hip-hop lyricism with DJ tracks, horn hits, and a grooving rhythm section. Expect to hear anything from rocksteady reggae rhythms and soothing vocal ballads to funky deep house grooves--and everything in between. Vertikal is creating a stir in Chicago's live music scene, drawing a diverse following that grows larger by the show. VertiKal has performed for capacity crowds at the Double Door and the Metro. In 2007, they were voted audience favorite at the Emergenza national final, with Lorin Cohen and [former vocalist] Amanda Shane earning "best bass player" and "best vocalist" nods!

Organic Groov: Bradley Leighton
Thursday, July 29, 2010, 8pm - 1am
To-Do!: Bradley Leighton brings a unique and powerful sound to flute. His style of swing evolved from listening to the big, hi-octane bands of Kenton, Herman and Ferguson in the 60's-70's. His funkiness derives from years of listening to Tower of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Brecker Brothers and countless other soul/R&B acts. He brings a fire and flair not usually heard nor expected from a flutist. Bradley has performed across the US and Asia, as both sideman and bandleader, for over 25 years. In addition to recording and performing, Bradley Leighton has continued to share his knowledge and enthusiasm of music as a clinician and teacher. Besides private lessons, he leads workshops for musicians of all skill levels, including, "Jazz Improvisation for the Classically Trained Flutist," and "Music For Life - Improvisation for the Adult Amateur Musician."

Marquis Hill Blacktet
Thursday, July 29, 2010, 8:30pm - 12:30am
To-Do!: Marquis Hill: I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in a single parent home. I began playing the drums in the 4th grade, and then switched to trumpet in the 5th grade after hearing my older cousin practice for hours above my room. Mrs. Diane Ellis then began teaching me the fundamentals of the trumpet at Dixon Elementary school. At my 8th grade graduation she placed a Dizzy Gillespie CD in his hand and since then I have been trying my best to keep the tradition of jazz alive in his playing. I am a strong believer that music can change the lives of children all over the world just as it has changed mine.

Greg Spero Band
Friday, July 30, 2010, 8pm - 2am
Saturday, July 31, 2010, 10pm - 4am
To-Do!: What can we expect from a musician who has three generations of Spero coursing through his bloodline? It was his father and grandfather who raised him in the tradition of true musicianship. But what we don't expect: abnormality. He's fearless to break from the established rules of music theory, truly wild in improvisational technique. Spero constantly pushes the boundaries onstage and offstage with his eccentric, signature style of playing. When you hear him experiment with jazz fusion onstage, you wonder, is this guy high or something? Think Jimmy Hendrix but on a keyboard. Spero's drug of choice: coffee. He's racked up so many points on his Starbucks card; he's one junkie who just can't live without java. Fans, be aware that a fresh batch of chocolate brownies will appease the budding jazz musician. This past year Spero has built a name for himself as a solo artist. Each performance is a revelation in the sporadic experiment of jazz fusion. Those hip to the music happenings in Chicago flock to Spero's performances.

Movies in the Parks: Guess Who's Coming To Dinner
Friday, July 30, 2010, 8:15 - 10:15pm
To-Do!: The film tells the story of Joanna "Joey" Drayton, a young White American woman who has had a whirlwind romance with Dr. John Prentice, an African American man she met while in Hawaii. The plot centers on Joanna's return to her liberal upper class American home in San Francisco, bringing her new fiancé to dinner to meet her parents, and the reaction of family and friends. The film depicts the discomfort of her parents as they try to accept their daughter's choice. It also touches on black-on-black racism when John is taken to task by his father and the household cook for his perceived presumption.
Soleil's Take: Movies in the Park ("MIP") is a low-key, family-friendly alternative to the Outdoor Film Festival (which, this year, appears to have fallen victim to budget cuts). At MIP, you'll find plenty of room to spread out and barbeque. Amble on in at your leisure and you'll still find room to enjoy the flick. Bring the kids, bring the dog and enjoy the summer evening! I've selected a few listings to include in the To-Dos, but visit the Chicago Park District website for MIP dates in a park near you!

Will I get out there and find $6 hotdogs and a $17 glass of white zinfandel and a $3 can of RC Cola? (3) How come Ravinia is sooooo much cheaper and lets you bring your own stuff? SATYA is a fresh and rising vocalist, composer, and lyricist who masterfully unites Brazilian & Indian influences over a Jazz foundation. Mwata Bowden Ensemble
Saturday, July 31, 2010, 8:30pm - 12:30am

In addition to the obvious technical virtuosity he commands on baritone saxophone and clarinet, he has been able to put together ensembles that develop his ideas on a somewhat larger scale. In his Sound Spectrum and Tri-Tone ensembles, for instance, he has presented long and complex compositions that nevertheless prove accessible to the uninitiated listener., Above all, though the AACM remains the constant in his musical life. Bowden is presently Chairman of the AACM. "It's extremely important to the cultural community, because otherwise this information is lost, and the next generation doesn't have the advantages they need. The AACM preserves that information, and so it protects our future".
