SummerDance: Kimosha P. Murphy f/ Chicago Afrobeat Project
Thursday, July 22, 2010, 6 - 9:30pm
To-Do!: Afrobeat cannot stand still. As the genre's tempting sounds continue a resurgence across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) remains true to its original vision of breathing the intensity of Chicago's rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat. Rather than become caricatures of the genre, CAbP slips a reverent nod to the tradition while delivering an energized originality different from any other band on the afrobeat scene today. Afrobeat's range of influences - funk, rock, jazz, afro-cuban, high life and juju music - settle into a hypnotic, dance-compelling pulse at the core of CAbP. The group layers a fiery originality around this core through high-energy rock and experimental jazz. At each of its 100+ live performances a year, the group's frenzied songs hit audiences with a big enough one-two punch to tirelessly knock them onto the dance floor time and time again
Soleil's Take: The dance floor has gotten a little tight as this To-Do has grown in popularity, but it's still a fun time! SummerDance has expanded to 63rd Street Beach, Navy Pier, Athletic Field Park and Humboldt Park Boathouse. The view is beautiful at each of the locations, so get out there - and don't be afraid to try a new style of music and dance! More SummerDance Dates!

Hosted by the esteemed Wicker Park boutique The Silver Room, this free event brings together people of all ages and lifestyles from across the Chicago-land area., The day ends with this official after party, featuring a live performance by jazz and soul music artist Peven Everett. Also featuring Danny Krivit 718 Sessions/Body and Soul/NYC Ron Trent.
Soleil's Take: I am definitely a Peven Everett fan, although, admittedly, I'm not thoroughly familiar with his music. I saw him a few years ago at Green Dolphin Street - and he was hot! I was struck by his mixture of a sort of sultry-jazzy-R&B sound with a kinda house foundation. Yeah. So, I'd like to hear him again. I expect that this set will draw a predominantly Black, but diverse crowd - aged mid-20s to late-40s.

To-Do!: A new coming solo artist, Kevin Andew Prchal (that's Per-KULL) is no stranger to the music scene. Prchal spent the beginning of his music career spending "some of the best years of his life" playing in the Chicago band The Young Sea. Prchal branched off on is own and began recording a few "little folk songs" in early 2009, which over the course of eight months turned into the three studio, three producer, friend filled collaboration that is his November '09 release Eat Shirt & Tie. Though no specific concept was in mind when putting the album together. Prchal has a clear, strong voice that is familiar sounding without being easy to mistake for someone else, a quality that most musicians would kill for, and that he makes the most of in his vocal tracks throughout the album.
