CAD Film Festival: Moloch Tropical
Thursday, June 24, 2010, 12:30 - 2:30pm
Chicago Premiere, Inspired by the kingdom of 19th-century king Henri-Christophe, one of the revolutionary leaders who won for Haiti its independence from French colonial rule, but set in a modern milieu, Moloch Tropical presents a fictionalized portrait of the final days marking the collapse of a regime. The tightly coiled tension at President Jean de Dieu's palatial fortress outside Port-au-Prince mirrors the drama of his security force that tries to quell the civil unrest as international diplomats one by one turn their backs on the president's summit invitation. De Dieu erratically exerts scraps of control as his authority rapidly disintegrates into humiliation. Using symbolism and an almost Shakespearean madness that reverberates across modern governments, Haitian-born auteur Raoul Peck (Lumumba) meticulously drapes the poetic across the political in a searing critique on the universal malady of absolute power corrupting absolutely., Directed by Raoul Peck, Haiti, 2009, 107 mins. In French with English subtitles. Cinechat: Actress Mireille Métélus will be present for a Q&A after the screening, followed by a catered reception. Program sponsored by the OIF and the Cultural Services of the French Consulate in Chicago. Fundraiser organized by the DuSable Heritage Association (DHA).

SummerDance: Erika Ochoa f/ Omar Souleyman
Thursday, June 24, 2010, 6 - 9:30pm
Omar Souleyman is a Syrian musical legend. Since 1994, he and his musicians have emerged as a staple of folk-pop throughout Syria, but until now they have remained little known outside of the country. To date, they have issued more than five-hundred studio and live- recorded cassette albums which are easily spotted in the shops of any Syrian city. Born in rural Northeastern Syria, he began his musical career in 1994 with a small group of local collaborators that remain with him today. The myriad musical traditions of the region are evident in their music - classical Arabic mawal-style vocalization gives way to high-octane Syrian Dabke (the regional folkloric dance and party music), Iraqi Choubi and a host of Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish styles, among others. This amalgamation is truly the sound of Syria. Erika Ochoa is a contemporary artist of Middle Eastern dance, specializing in Egyptian-style dance. She is a certified instructor of Middle Eastern dance under Hadia's method and has been dancing professionally in the Chicagoland area for the past fourteen years.

Little Doc has originally wanted to play the trombone, but had to settle for the only horn available in Arlington's small music store, a trumpet. A week later, with the help of his father and a manual of instructions, the seven-year old was so good that he was invited to join the high school band. At the age of 12, Little Doc won the Music Educators National Contest and, while still in high school, was hired to go on the road with the famous Ted Fio Rito Orchestra. He served in the Army during World War II and, following his discharge, landed a spot with the Charlie Barnett Band. When this band broke up, Severinsen toured with the Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman bands in the late 1940s.

CAD Film Festival: Just Like Us
Thursday, June 24, 2010, 9 - 10:15pm
To-Do!: Is there comedy in the Middle East? Despite there being no easy way to describe stand-up comedy in Arabic, a group of "comedy ambassadors" travel from Dubai to Beirut, Riyadh to Cairo with a double mission: to disrupt the pervasive image of Muslims as solemn, threatening, and inhuman; and to deliver some much-needed relief and laughter to the intense reality of everyday life in the Middle East. As one of the first comedy shows in the Arab world starts rolling, backstage anxiety and nerves rumble after busting open cultural taboos in each city. The comics willfully walk the line on jokes about Islam, sexuality, and body parts -- at times even with a foul mouth -- in the hopes that, as one performer says, if we can learn to laugh at ourselves, the rest of the world will laugh with us. As edifying as it is entertaining, Egyptian-American comic and first-time director Ahmed Ahmed's film shows us the Middle East like most Americans have never seen it before., Directed by Ahmed Ahmed, 2010, U.S.A., 72 mins.

Other Times To-Do It: Saturdays, June 5 - August 28
Venue Info: haven't been out to CCHT yet (it is, afterall, in a suburb), but a few questions come immediately to mind: (1) $45-65 is a lot of loot to sit on the lawn - is that grass padded or sumthin'? (2) No outside concessions?!?! That kinda takes the "pic" (i.e., your choice) out of picnic-ing, doesn't it? Will I get out there and find $6 hotdogs and a $17 glass of white zinfandel and a $3 can of RC Cola? (3) How come Ravinia is sooooo much cheaper and let's you bring your own stuff? (4) You can't bring your own chair - you must rent one there? Come on, now - we must be up to $75 already - just to be on the lawn!

Josh Abrams Quartet
Saturday, June 26, 2010, 8:30pm - 12:30am
To-Do!: Josh Abrams quartet embodies a remarkable geographic cross section of today's free music. Bassist Joshua Abrams might best be known for his work with Town and Country, but his ubiquity in Chicago's improvised music scene proves he's one of the most hard-working, creative, and prolific bass players around. He's also a member of the trio Sticks and Stones with Mantana Roberts and Chad Taylor. On any given night, there's a good chance you'll find Abrams playing in one of Chicago's famous jazz nooks.

Soleil's Take: Movies in the Park ("MIP") is a low-key, family-friendly alternative to the Outdoor Film Festival (which, this year, appears to have fallen victim to budget cuts). At DuSable Museum, you'll find plenty of room to spread out and barbeque. Amble on in at your leisure and you'll still find room to enjoy the flick. Bring the kids, bring the dog and enjoy the summer evening! I've selected a few listings to include in the To-Dos, but visit the Chicago Park District website for MIP dates in a park near you!

Sunday Jazz, f/ Robert Irving III Quartet
Sunday, June 27, 2010, 8 - 11:30pm
To-Do!: A native of Chicago, Irving was one of a group of young Chicago musicians who in the late '70s and early '80s formed the nucleus of Miles Davis' recording and touring bands. It was Irving's composition "Space" (performed by him and his talented Chicago-based group) that captured Davis' interest. That led to Miles inviting him and the Chicago musicians to New York in 1979 for his first recording sessions in several years. As it turned out, Irving's music served as the impetus and motivation for the jazz great to resume his largely dormant (1974 to 1979) musical journey. Miles used the sound and direction as a catalyst to propel himself into the last phase of his life and career (1979 to 1991)., After so many successes with Davis, Irving left his band in 1988 and embarked on his solo musical journey. At the time of the transition of his relationship with Miles, Irving parted with this final gift from his mentor: "Music is a painting you can hear, and a painting is music you can see. It's time for you to start working on your own canvasses."

At 13, Marqueal moved to Kansas City and spent his high school years playing tenor in Jazz and Concert Band, oboe in the Orchestra, and keyboards in several local R&B and Hip Hop groups. In 1989, he attended the University of Kansas and started taking music seriously, performing in the KU Jazz Ensemble and playing in bar bands on weekends. Performing in clubs with those bands ". . . is where I really learned how to play." During this time, Marqueal's saxophone style developed, which is inspired by Branford Marsalis, Maceo Parker, Grover Washington, David Sanborn and John Coltrane.
