THEATER REVIEW:  Low Down Dirty Blues

By Randal Myler and Dan Wheetman

When you think of the blues, you think of music with a purpose, a story; some heart wrenching deeply spiritual soul searching tome that tears at your heart strings, like a bass players fingers frenetically playing his instrument.  Well, The Low Down Dirty Blues at the Northlight Theatre in Skokie doesn't disappoint.  This quartet of talented singers and trio of accomplished musicians delight the audience with their vocal and musical arsenal and engaging entertainment style.

The repertoire of songs ranged from what you would expect; some with a little sass and in your face bravado; some with "put all our business out in the street" storytelling.  The themes are so common to our existence that we can anticipate that the next selection will be about some cheatin', no good man or how some forlorn vixen is fixin' to love her man better than any other woman can.  And although these themes may reverberate like a bad head cold, the soulfulness and playfulness that the cast bestows upon us is like an early Christmas gift. A gallery talk for From Process to Print: Graphic Works by Romare Bearden is given by Pat Johnson, founding director of the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, and co-host of WTTW's Grannies on Safari., Throughout all his art, Romare Bearden wove a rich tapestry of literary, biblical, mythological, popular culture, and western and non-western references informed by his African American cultural experiences. Possibly best known for his collage works, Bearden often worked and reworked those original images into astounding prints. He pushed the process with his artistic imagination using experimental techniques, sizes, and colors., The extraordinary versatility is visible in this exhibition's approximate 75 lithographs, etchings, and prints drawn from Bearden's three decades of graphic work., This exhibition is made possible with generous support from the Terra Foundation for American Art. Soleil's Pick:  Music Without Borders Presents Dandana: A Celebration of Muslim Voices featuring Tinariwen with Monajat Yulchieva

Thursday, June 17, 2010, 6:30 - 9pm

Hailing from the Sahara Desert, Tinariwen returns to Chicago combining traditional melodies with blues, rock and Arabic influences to create hypnotic, trance-like songs. With their edgy, soulful sound, Tinariwen's music is often reminiscent of the Mississippi and Chicago blues styles, continuing to make waves in the American and European rock scene., Monâjât Yulchieva (b. 1960) is a leading performer of Uzbek classical art song. From humble origins on a cotton-growing collective farm in the Ferghana Valley of eastern Uzbekistan, Yulchieva appeared suddenly on the concert stage, and like a spark, her career was ignited. While many musical sparks fade as quickly as they appear, Yulchieva has maintained her preeminence through a sustained focus on the performance of classical songs arranged for her distinctive alto voice.

Soleil's TakeView our select Ravinia schedule!
Miscellaneous Info: Ravinia is a spot that must be visited at least once each season. The parkgrounds are absolutely beautiful and nothing beats a lazy summer afternoon, turned to balmy evening under the stars, sprawled out on a blanket. (Or lawn chair for those of you who prefer to remain off the ground.) Purchase lawn seats or get reserve seats and start your evening on the lawn. Wine and a reasonable variety of tasty treats, meals and sweets are available for purchase and lawn chairs available for rent. But, it's so much fun to pack up a picnic basket, some candles (citronella :) ) and incense - do it your way!, Drive and face the mass exodus after the show. The Metra is the easiest way to get there and the last train leaves about 30 minutes after the show. Coming in, you'll usually find some lively, informal pre-parties on each car. And, what - people actually talking to strangers and exchanging food and drink on the train and at the park, rather than isolating themselves behind their cell phones or I-pods? Yes, people - it happens. And it's happenING - so get yourself out there!

Soleil's Pick: Somi

Friday, June 18, 2010, 8:30 - 11:30pm

When Somi was growing up, her mother told her that the rain, ever unpredictable, could be as much a blessing as a challenge. That notion has stayed with the charismatic singer and songwriter all her life and now provides a metaphorical focus for her third album, If The Rains Come First. (ObliqSound), a stunning collection of selfpenned story-based songs, a meditation on opening ourselves up to life's blessings and challenges much in the way that we accept the rain and all that it brings., As The Boston Globe recently put it, Somi's new album "glistens with the sheen of an almost impossibly perfect cosmopolitanism." Singing in English and three East African languages, Somi's vocal delivery is subtle yet the power she exerts is enormous. Her artistic evolution is indisputable. Born in Illinois to immigrants from Rwanda and Uganda, the African and Jazz legacies are always crucial to her sound. Often compared to the likes of Miriam Makeba, Sarah Vaughn, Cassandra Wilson, and Cesaria Evora, her new album also features the legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela, a longtime Somi fan and mentor. JazzTimes magazine describes her live performance as "the earthy gutsiness of Nina Simone blended with the vocal beauty of Dianne Reeves," Billboard calls it "all elegance and awe . . . utterly captivating," and Vogue simply calls her voice "superb." [more]

Soleil's Take: As I enter this To-Do info, I am thoroughly diggin' her vibe! The concert should be great, I only wish it were at a different venue . . . like the old HotHouse. But, oh, well - I will endure the Shrine for this performance. Be sure to visit her website and take a listen!

CAD Film Festival: Freedom Riders

Friday, June 18, 2010, 9:30 - 11:30pm

Despite two earlier Supreme Court decisions that mandated the desegregation of interstate travel facilities, Black Americans in 1961 continued to endure hostility, segregation and racism while traveling through the South. The newly inaugurated Kennedy administration, embroiled in the Cold War and worried about the nuclear threat, did little to address domestic Civil Rights. It was becoming obvious that in order to get the attention of the Kennedy Administration something dramatic had to be done. Freedom Riders is the powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of eight months that changed America forever. From May until December 1961, more than 400 Black and White Americans risked their lives -- many endured savage beatings and imprisonment -- for simply traveling together on buses as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating the Jim Crow laws, the Freedoms Riders' belief in non-violent activism was sorely tested as mob violence and bitter racism greeted them along the way. Featuring testimony from a fascinating cast of central characters: the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the rides firsthand. Directed by Stanley Nelson, U.S.A, 2009, 111 mins. In English.

CAD Film Festival: Black Nation

Saturday, June 19, 2010, 2 - 3pm

Chicago Premiere! Black Nation is a film that takes an uncompromising look at the state of black manhood in America as seen through the prism of the streets of Detroit, past and present, and that city's controversial Church of the Black Madonna. Swedish filmmaker Mats Hjelm draws on his deep personal connection to the church and the city, to explore the racial, cultural and political ramifications of a "black male genocide" - all within the context of the decomposition of a once proud city. In a year where an African American has ascended to the most powerful office on earth, Black Nation offers the audience a penetrating look at what it really means to be a black man in urban America today. It also offers a hopeful vision of the future in the form of a church with a solution. Directed by Mats Hjelm, 2009, Sweden/U.S.A., 60 mins. In English.

Sponsored by Center for Black Diaspora at DePaul University., Amilcar Cabral, Amilcar Cabral was the leader of the Liberation Movement of Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau and the founder of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC). He was born in Guinea in 1924 and assassinated in Conakry in 1973. Regarded as a true icon of African history, this documentary provides considerable background to this revolutionary giant and reveals Cabral in several dimensions: as a man, a father, politician, humanist and poet. The documentary is skillfully produced and uses a wealth of rare archive footage, balanced inclusion of varied testimonies of important African personalities and the credible recreation of notable episodes of Cabral's life., Directed by Ana Ramos Lisboa, Cape Verde/Portugal, 2001, 52 mins. In Portuguese with English subtitles.

CAD Film Festival: Up from the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream

Saturday, June 19, 2010, 6:30 - 8pm

Chicago Premiere Up from the Bottoms tells the story of the massive migration of African Americans from the rural South to the prosperous North during the war years and beyond. The voice of Cicely Tyson guides us through these touching, thoughtful and often funny stories as told by fifteen residents of Muskegon, Michigan. Civil rights activist, comedian and author Dick Gregory gives a national perspective along with the renowned scholar of Black Americana studies, Dr. Ben Wilson. During the late 1930's through the 1960's factory jobs in the north were abundant while farming jobs in the southern states were disappearing. In the 1940's alone, a million and a half African Americans left the south and spread across this land. They were looking for a better life, the American dream. This documentary reveals the human side of the migration and the character of the people who chose to make this noble journey. Directed by James Schaub & Rod Schaub, U.S.A, 2009, 58 mins. In English.

(2) No outside concessions?!?! That kinda takes the "pic" (i.e., your choice) out of picnic-ing, doesn't it? Will I get out there and find $6 hotdogs and a $17 glass of white zinfandel and a $3 can of RC Cola? (3) How come Ravinia is sooooo much cheaper and let's you bring your own stuff? (4) You can't bring your own chair - you must rent one there? Come on, now - we must be up to $75 already - just to be on the lawn!

Buddy Guy

CAD Film Festival: Do U Cry 4 Me Argentina?

Saturday, June 19, 2010, 9 - 10:45pm

Chicago Premiere:  Between 1986 and 1991, more than twenty thousand Koreans left their country for Argentina. Many felt displaced as they attempted to learn the language and adapt to Argentine life. After a few years of isolation from their homeland and mother tongue, they no longer felt fully Korean either. Against this backdrop, Duk-kyu and Bo-rum show their interest in each other after Bo-rum's father's illegal clothing factory is raided. Their trip to La Boca, a popular tourist area, is bittersweet and although they clearly have fun on their date, it appears that they are but tourists in their adopted country. Hyoungsik and his gang of friends spend their days scrapping with the locals and harboring resentment towards the Koreans who got rich quick. Meanwhile, Tina represents the second generation, an integrated beacon of hope for the future., Directed by Bae Youn Suk, Argentina, 2005, 102 mins. In Korean and Spanish with English subtitles.

Monday, June 21, 2010, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Haiti Fundraiser after the Sunday screening.

Chicago Premiere, Inspired by the kingdom of 19th-century king Henri-Christophe, one of the revolutionary leaders who won for Haiti its independence from French colonial rule, but set in a modern milieu, Moloch Tropical presents a fictionalized portrait of the final days marking the collapse of a regime. The tightly coiled tension at President Jean de Dieu's palatial fortress outside Port-au-Prince mirrors the drama of his security force that tries to quell the civil unrest as international diplomats one by one turn their backs on the president's summit invitation. De Dieu erratically exerts scraps of control as his authority rapidly disintegrates into humiliation. Using symbolism and an almost Shakespearean madness that reverberates across modern governments, Haitian-born auteur Raoul Peck (Lumumba) meticulously drapes the poetic across the political in a searing critique on the universal malady of absolute power corrupting absolutely., Directed by Raoul Peck, Haiti, 2009, 107 mins. In French with English subtitles. Cinechat: Actress Mireille Métélus will be present for a Q&A after the screening, followed by a catered reception. Sunday Jazz: Bill McFarland and the Chicago Horns

Sunday, June 20, 2010, 8 - 11:30pm

Bill McFarland and The Chicago Horns have been one of the most prolific horn sections in blues and jazz for the last ten years. Trumpet player Kenny Anderson is a long standing professional who is well known and one of the leading Salsa performers from the Chicago music scene. Hank Ford on Saxophone has played with all the great performers of blues and jazz. He has played with Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield and has played on the "Wiz" and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies" stage shows. Band leader and founder Bill McFarland has played on the late, great Albert Collin's "Frostbite" album and on Fenton Robinson's and Lonnie Brooks' albums and has played live with Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Otis Clay just to name a few. He is the director and the driving force of The Chicago Horns. "This band's taut rhythms, its front line's muscular quality and its rhythm section's aggressiveness make The Chicago Horns sound more like a small jazz symphony than the hard-hitting sextet it is." Truly, Bill McFarland and The Chicago Horns are now the top horn section in the blues and jazz world.

CAD Film Festival: Daratt (Dry Season)

Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 9 - 10:30pm

Also showing Wed., June 23 at 9 pm

Following the Chadian government's announcement of an amnesty for war criminals after decades of civil war, teenage orphan Atim (Ali Bacha Barkaï) is handed a revolver a mission of vengeance by his elderly grandfather: to travel from his tiny rural village to the capital and kill the man who murdered his father many years ago. His target turns out to be not a bloodthirsty monster but a devoutly religious Muslim baker (Youssouf Djaoro) who gruffly takes the young would-be assassin under his wing as an apprentice. The elliptical story, graced with notes of humor and expressive silences, unfolds with some surprising twists before ultimately resolving into a quietly wrenching drama of personal accountability and moral choice. Beautifully and simply photographed on location, Daratt is a fine follow-up to Abouna and confirms Haroun as one of Africa's leading filmmakers, a committed humanist. He brilliantly shows how cycles of violence and patterns of war can sometimes be avoided by personal strength alone. Directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, France/Belgium/Chad/Austria, 2006, 96 mins. At least that's the case at one local Blues bar, where musicians gather after hours to swap stories and songs filled with passion, soul and an authentic love of the Blues that can't be described, but demands to be played. Inspired by Blues legends such as Muddy Waters, Ma Rainey, Sophie Tucker, Howlin' Wolf and Pearl Bailey, this low down dirty jam session pays tribute to a musical form that's steeped in Chicago history-and alive and thriving today!
