FEATURED TO-DO: Fathers & Sons
NEW TO-DOS!
ONGOING TO-DOS!
Greetings!

Stephanie - just havin' fun!

Explore Chicago [Theater] and Discover Yourself!

The reason I started Soleil's To-Dos was that during my early stages of exploring Chicago, I attended a wide variety of large and small events sponsored by both mainstream and African-American organizations.  I would often be dismayed by the low attendance of African-Americans.  I knew plenty of people who would have been interested in those events - if only they had known about them.  So, I set about creating a calendar that would compile information about events focused on people of color.  While I recognized that smaller organizations lacked the resources to effectively market their events, I remained puzzled by the lack of outreach shown by some larger organizations.

I must express my appreciation to Writers' Theatre, a company that is new to me and recently discovered in connection with the current production, Old Settler. (I believe this is the first African-American production they've done.)  As I have done with other theater companies, I contacted Writer's Theatre to encourage them to use Soleil's To-Dos as a vehicle to promote Old Settler.  They have done so, and, as always, I encourage you to support those businesses and organizations that value your patronage enough to seek your attendance.

After a few years of hit and miss experiences with cultural events in Chicago, I set out on a mission to explore Chicago, and in the process, discovered more about myself. I discovered that I am creative.  I rediscovered my love of poetry.  I discovered (through the Mature H.O.T. Women program) that I am not a clutz. ;) I know of people who, admittedly, cannot name anything about which they are passionate.  I know of others who have put their passions on the backburner for so long that those passions have almost cooled completely.  If you fall into any of these categories, I encourage you to take advantage of the To-Dos listings and rekindle your passion!

For some of you, I'm making this a little easier with a bunch of giveaways!  Congratulations to Manulita Mc and Alison C - each the winner of a pair of tickets to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Auditorium Theatre!  Even if you're not Manulita or Alison, you can still be a winner by using the discount code "ToDo" to save $10 on ticket prices!  (Restrictions apply.)

Black World Cinema: Endgame

Thursday, March 4, 2010, 7 - 9:30pm

Vantage Point director Pete Travis turns his attention from high-profile political assassinations to the high-risk talks that ushered in the end of apartheid while securing the release of Nelson Mandela in this historical drama.  Starring William Hurt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Strong, and Johnny Lee Miller.

The time is the late 1980s, a crucial period in the history of South Africa.  President P.W. Botha is hanging onto power by a thread as the African (ANC) takes up arms against apartheid and the country tumbles towards insurrection.  A British mining concern called Consolidated Gold is convinced that their interests would be better served in a stables South Africa, and quietly dispatches Michael Young, their head of public affairs, to open an unofficial dialogue between the bitter rivals.  Assembling a reluctant yet brilliant team to pave the way to reconciliation by confronting obstacles that initially seem insurmountable, Young places his trust in ANC leader Thabo Mbeki and Afrikaner philosophy professor Willie Esterhuyse.  It is their empathy that will ultimately serve as the catalyst for change by proving more powerful than the terrorist bombs that threaten to disrupt the peaceful dialogue. As the story shifts between Mandela's jail cell, Botha's chambers, ANC headquarters, and a rented car occupied by a British bureaucrat, the prospect for peace becomes more than just a distanthope.

She currently resides in New York City, where she is an exceptionally active member of the music scene, and she reaches people around the world with her recordings, tours and philanthropic work.
