Keb' Mo'
Friday, November 13, 2009, 7:30 - 11pm
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Keb' Mo's music is a living link to the seminal Delta blues that traveled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America--informing all of its musical roots - before evolving into a universally celebrated art form. Born Kevin Moore in South Los Angeles to parents originally from the deep South, he adopted his better known stage name when he was a young player who became inspired by the force of this essential African-American legacy. In the storied tradition of bluesmen before him including Muddy Waters - formerly McKinley Morganfield - and Taj Mahal, who began his days as Henry St. Clair Fredericks, Moore became known as Keb' Mo'. His acclaimed self-titled 1994 debut album introduced that now famous appellation to the world, and his latest album, 2006's Suitcase, brings it to new heights. [more]

Close-Up 2: Jazmin Sky
Friday, November 13, 2009 and Saturday, November 15, 2009
Jazmín's destiny as a typical middle-class hick-town white girl thus appeared inevitable (as further evidenced by her inexplicable fondness for Farrah Fawcett hair). That is, until she heard her first taste of Prince on a friend's stereo (When Doves Cry, Erotic City). Something immediately stirred within Jazmin's malnourished musical soul, and the experience sparked what would become a life-long love affair with funk and R&B music. Jazmín's Olivia Newton John albums and her soundtrack to Cats quickly found themselves relegated to the dust bin, to be replaced by the likes of James Brown, The Time, Run DMC, Angela Winbush, and of course, Prince., Following her escape from Johnstown, Jazmín Sky has graced some of the world's most exciting cities with her soulful 3-octave voice. She's lived in Montreal, Madrid, Paris, Rome, and NYC and speaks fluent French, Spanish, Italian and even some Portuguese in addition to her native English. (Suffice it to say, she can fairly be characterized as "language geek" in addition to "soul diva".) [more]

The Sexy Soul Tour, f/ Eric Benet, Mint Condition & Ledisi
Friday, November 13, 2009, 8pm - 12am
Eric Benet is on top of the world these days. The r&b soul singer/songwriter/producer is sounding strong, romantic and full of joy on his aptly titled third solo effort, Love & Life., They say home is where the heart is, and Eric returned to his Milwaukee, Wisconsin roots to record his Friday/Reprise/Warner Bros. Records CD Love & Life. Collaborating with his longtime production partner Demonte Posey and writer/producer/cousin George Nash, Jr., Eric completely opened his heart and soul with this decidedly organic production, exercising complete creative control over for the first time in his career. Co-writing and producing eleven of the twelve tracks with his partners, "musically and creatively, it's just as I envisioned it. I wanted to make a record that was a good feeling R&B record, and some of the best R&B for me growing up had a dash of gospel, a couple dashes of jazz. You could feel the social consciousness and you could feel where the artist was in their life. Whatever challenges, victories, blessings that I'm presently experiencing and the fruit of all that, are the songs that I write." Having fun through the entire process, Eric's sustained motivation from experiencing love and living life can be heard skillfully weaved throughout every album track.

Margo Jefferson: Blackface, Whiteface
Sunday, November 15, 2009, 10:30 - 11:30am
Here's what these great performers, born a year apart, shared: a background in vaudeville and blues, great comic timing, and a gift for playing against and along with cultural expectations. Each used blackface and whiteface traditions to her own end. West was given room to shape her sumptuously insolent image. McDaniel received a handful of race directives-be bossy, be loud, talk dialect, fuss but always obey your superiors-and turned these ingredients into a memorable character. Margo Jefferson, cultural critic, Pulitzer Prize winner, author of On Michael Jackson, and professor at Columbia University and Eugene Lang College, The New School, uncovers the similarities and differences between West and McDaniel in their respective quests for laughs and larger-than-life personas.

Chris Greene Quartet
Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 7 - 10pm
You and some friends stumble into a jazz club somewhere in Chicago. You are not quite familiar with the genre, but you have heard enough to know what to expect. You assume that the four guys who are preparing to play will do something that is mellow and cool, because that is what jazz musicians do. They will avoid anything that even resembles pop music, because that type of music has always been taboo in the more sophisticated jazz circles. But then the quartet begins to play, and you hear and see something that suddenly ruins all preconceived notions of what jazz music is supposed to be. The songs are spirited and melodic. The band's energy is contagious - enough so that the crowd is now standing and making an improvised dance floor out of the little bit of space in front of the band. More surprisingly, the crowd is composed of people who are young and old, black and white. Something different is going on here, something which causes you to want more. The young leader of the band, the one who has been wowing the crowd with his saxophone skills, then introduces himself as Chris Greene. [more]
