CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT ICE SKATING RINKS OPEN

NOVEMBER 28 FOR 2009-'10 SEASON

Skating Season Runs Through February 28

 

The Chicago Park District's ice skating rinks open for the 2009-'10 season Saturday, Nov. 28.  Skating season runs through Feb. 28, weather permitting.  Click here to watch a video on ice skating at Chicago Park District rinks.

 

Bring your own skates, and ice skating at all outdoor Chicago Park District ice rinks is free.  Skate rentals are $5 at all outdoor rinks except for Daley Bicentennial, which has an additional $1 surcharge.  Concessions are available at select rinks.  Please note there is an admission fee at McFetridge Sports Center in California Park, an indoor rink that is open year round except August.

His music is delightfully soothing, as he extends voice-like sounds from his saxophone. The last year has seen Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist Harlan Jefferson moving onto the Chicago scene with his neo-soul group So So Tight. After headlining at Anthony's Jazz Club in Elgin, IL, Jefferson began playing regularly at Chicago's world-famous Cotton Club and the renowned Back Room.

Mel Watkins, a former writer and editor of The New York Times Book Review, has written extensively on African-American comedy and literature. His 1994 book, On the Real Side, is a highly acclaimed social history of underground African-American humor and its impact on American culture. Watkins will discuss African-American humor ranging from its emergence during slavery and evolution from blackface minstrelsy through such seminal comedians as Bert Williams, Stepin Fetchit, Moms Mabley, Dick Gregory, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and Chris Rock.

This provocative roundtable discussion explores two of the most important influences on comedy and popular culture in the United States: African American humor and Jewish humor. From Bert Williams, Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer, and the "race films" of the 1920s to Woody Allen, Richard Pryor, Jerry Seinfeld, and the age of Obama, the panelists will discuss comedy's role in critiquing and subverting dominant American culture. Panelists include Romi Crawford, assistant professor of visual and critical studies at the School of the Art Institute and a former curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem; Sander Gilman, an authority on Jewish culture and psychoanalysis and professor of humanities at Emory University; and Mel Watkins, author of On the Real Side: A History of African American Comedy from Slavery to Chris Rock.

The Color of Funny: Dick Gregory on Race, Comedy, and Justice

It's hard to predict whether Dick Gregory will be most celebrated as a path-breaking comedian or a trailblazing civil rights activist. It's impossible to imagine the history of either movement without him-or without the unique way he managed to blend the two. In the early 1960s, he became one of the first black comedians to perform before integrated audiences. In 1967, he ran for mayor of Chicago against Richard J. Daley, and a year later for president as the Freedom and Peace Party candidate. The editor of African American Humor: The Best Black Comedy from Slavery to Today, Gregory is still a staunch, wry political voice across a range of issues as varied as nutrition, social justice, and the environment. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Laura Washington will interview the provocative and always unpredictable Gregory.

Scott Burns

A native of Dayton, Ohio, saxophonist Scott Burns began his education and professional career in music in nearby Cincinnati. After graduating at the top of his class from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Scott became an in-demand performer in the greater Cincinnati / Dayton area. While attending the university, Cincinnatis own Blue Wisp Jazz Club provided him a supplemental, hands-on education in jazz music. Countless nights at the club were spent soaking in local and national jazz talent; in addition, Scott was a frequent performer as both leader and sideman at the renowned institution. Among his many performance credits in Cincinnati include the Blue Wisp Big Band, led by legendary drummer John von Ohlen, the PsychoAcoustic Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and numerous small group performances with pianists Steve Schmidt, Phil DeGreg, and drummer Art Gore. Scott also performed in a quintet with legendary jazz trumpeter Clark Terry as part of a Cincinnati jazz series In 1996., In 1998, Scott moved to Chicago, IL to attend graduate school at DePaul University. Pachacamac is a traditional dance troupe that returns to our stage with a new show called Shungo (or "Heart" in the Kichwa language) that encompasses dance from the coastal, Amazonian and mountainous regions of Ecuador. The artists will offer a workshop in our Thursday Workshop Series.

Winner of the Theodore Ward Prize for African-American Playwriting

Written by: Shepsu Aakhu Director: Mignon McPherson Nance, On the heels of the governments apology to African-Americans for slavery, the Reparations Movement was born. The movement was successful, checks were written to the descendants of slaves and the seeds for a new America were sown.

Ten Square is one of the cities that emerged in "New America" and the life of the African-American community has been forever altered. The Illinois Central Railroad, 12th Street Station was the portal for many African Americans. Thousands of Blacks came to Chicago continuously from 1890 through the 1950's due to racism in the South, lack of opportunity, and the desire for education and employment., The largest number of African Americans in Chicago settled between 18th Street on the North and 51st Street on the South - State Street on the West and Cottage Grove on the East during the Great Migration., The Chicago Defender Founded in 1905, communicated with more blacks than any other publication in the first half of the twentieth century. The newspaper encouraged the migration of black southerners to Northern cities with a circulation of over 200,000. Pullman Porters aided the nationwide distribution.

Live Jazz at the Velvet Lounge

The Velvet Lounge is the only place in the world where you can hear the Chicago sound seven days a week. The Sunday night jam sessions have been an effective way to promote younger members of the jazz community. Fred Anderson opened the Velvet Lounge in 1982 after his club The Birdhouse, on the near north side, closed due to city zoning ordinances.

Poetry on Perry

Mondays, 7:30 - 11pm

This event delivers a fresh approach to a popular idea. Complete with a mood-setting DJ, this weekly open-mic adds old school flavor to south-side smothered soul. Come for the dynamic poetry workshop and advance your literary work with writing exercises facilitated by established local teaching artists. Stay for the open mic reading featuring well-known performers citywide, up and coming writers and you. All one has to pay is $5 and respect to the mic. Poetry on Perry is a safe space for all artists to cultivate their craft and build an artistic community of like minds and interests. The first rule is there are no rules . . . anything goes. This open-mic is open to poets, authors, songwriters and performers.
