Gary Tu Trio

Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 7 - 10pm

Around age 16 I heard my first jazz album. I think it was Miles' first Quintet. A bass player friend of mine also introduced me to an album with Jaco Pastorius on it called Bright Size Life. I heard Pat Metheny for the first time., I began checking out every jazz CD and vinyl I could get my hands on at the library and dubbing them onto cassettes at home. Some of these included: Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Bird, Blue Note stuff, Charlie Christian, Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins, Ornette, Metheny, Scofield, Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, John Abercrombie, etc., In 1994 at age 17, I entered Roosevelt University as a double major in Voice Performance and Jazz Guitar. The following year I transferred to University of Miami for three semesters. I then returned to Roosevelt University in 1997, and in 1999 I completed my Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance.

Chicago Artists Month

Chicago Artists Month is an annual celebration of Chicago's vibrant visual arts community during the month of October. Over 200 events take place including exhibitions of emerging and established artists, openings, demonstrations, tours, open studios and neighborhood art walks at museums, galleries, parks, neighborhood art centers, artists' studios and other locations throughout the city.

Chicago Artists Month 2.0 -  This year's theme, Chicago Artists Month 2.0, refers to the concepts of interactivity and connectivity associated with Web 2.0, and highlights the ways in which artists interact with their audiences, interface with other artists, and use technology in order to create and distribute their work - locally, globally and virtually.

Meet the Artists -  Each year, Chicago Artists Month spotlights a group of artists who embody the diversity of the community. They all are associated with exhibitions or events where you can meet them or see their work in October. They are recommended by the organizers of these programs, and represent just a handful of the many artists participating in Chicago Artists Month.
