I am soooooooo happy that I get to giveaway two pairs of tickets to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at Court Theatre!  I saw the performance with Lauren (see her review below) and was astounded by the performance!  "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" - sounded like it would be an old-timey Black musical, but what a surprise we were in for.  Intense?  Definitely.  Powerful?  Absolutely.  Moving?  You betcha!  Make sure you catch it before the end of the run on October 18!  Congratulations to Diane W. and Connie C., both of whom followed the link in the Soleil's Solo e-mail on Wednesday and are the randomly selected winners!  I have no doubt that they will enjoy the show!

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

THEATER REVIEW:  Stoop Stories
 Ode to Harlem in Chicago

We all know about the stoop, that summertime legend where we witness prom, graduations, move-ins, break-ins and the men and women in blue.  Those stories that were made popular in Do the Right Thing and 227.  Yes, that illustrious stoop, didn't seem as familiar in Dael Orlandersmiths' Stoop Stories featured at The Goodman Theatre.

Stoop Stories follows Ms. Orlandersmith, a Pulitzer Prize nominee for her play Yellowman, a spoken word poet turned playwright, as she travels through Uptown and Downtown Manhattan. Bridge and Tunnel by Sara Jones; this is not, but at best, an elaborate spoken word performance with aggressive, passionate tales of her experience amongst drugs and abuse.  [

THEATER REVIEW:  Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is August Wilson's 1920s entry of his 20th century cycle.  This Tony-nominated play takes place entirely in a studio in Chicago's South Side at a recording session of Ma Rainey, "the Mother of the Blues," and her band. It's the only play in the cycle set in Chicago. In his typical fashion, Wilson infuses comedy and music in this drama exploring the tensions between the past and present, African and American identity, the North and the South, the temptations of this world and the power of the spiritual realm as well as the psychic pain, oppression and exploitation rampant in Black life as the descendants of slaves tried to find their place in American life in a new century - a century they dared hope would be kinder than the last.  [more]

Chicago Artists Month

Over 200 events take place including exhibitions of emerging and established artists, openings, demonstrations, tours, open studios and neighborhood art walks at museums, galleries, parks, neighborhood art centers, artists' studios and other locations throughout the city.

Chicago Artists Month 2.0, This year's theme, Chicago Artists Month 2.0, refers to the concepts of interactivity and connectivity associated with Web 2.0, and highlights the ways in which artists interact with their audiences, interface with other artists, and use technology in order to create and distribute their work - locally, globally and virtually.

Meet the Artists, Each year, Chicago Artists Month spotlights a group of artists who embody the diversity of the community. They all are associated with exhibitions or events where you can meet them or see their work in October. They are recommended by the organizers of these programs, and represent just a handful of the many artists participating in Chicago Artists Month. Black World Cinema: Soul Power

Thursday, October 1, 2009, 7 - 9:30pm

2009, USA, 105 min., 35MM
Directed by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte

In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The dream-child of Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with "The Rumble in the Jungle," the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, previously chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary WHEN WE WERE KINGS. SOUL POWER is a verité documentary about this legendary music festival (dubbed "Zaire '74"), and it depicts the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, among a host of others. At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers, these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots, as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience, to give the performances of their lives. The concert has achieved mythological significance as the definitive Africa(n)-American musical event of the 20th Century. SOUL POWER is crafted from the extensive "outtakes" that remained after making WHEN WE WERE KINGS, which documented the epic title fight, but relegated the music festival to a small, supporting role. This story of power and lust is set in a re-imagined Haiti that stands as the world's greatest superpower. Only the fiercely mischievous pen of Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks (Black Diamond) could so ignite the hidden power of this enduring myth. Award-winning Ensemble Member Laura Eason (Around the World in 80 Days) directs Lookingglass' 51st World Premiere.

The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity (Previews; Humanities Night)

Through November 1, 2009

A world premiere, By Kristoffer Diaz, Directed by Eddie Torres, Macedonio Guerra is a middle rank pro wrestler who may have discovered his ticket to the big time: an impossibly charismatic, hip-hop-influenced Indian kid from Brooklyn. Their boss has the perfect concept for their in-ring alter egos: pair them as a team of terrorists. Diaz' smart, comic look at pro wrestling, geopolitics, and refrigerator crispers is a theatrical smack down of dazzling hip-hop language presented with a fresh, funny, high-octane flair. Set in the world of professional wrestling, Chad also raises pertinent questions about racial identity and pop culture in our society. In addition to generating major buzz last summer at Ignition, Chad Deity was a finalist for the 2008 O'Neill Playwrights Conference, and subsequently won Arizona Theater Company's National Latino Playwriting Award. His other plays include Welcome to Arroyo's and Guernica, which have been produced and developed at American Theatre Company, The Orchard Project, Hip-Hop Theater Festival, The Lark, Summer Play Festival, Donmar Warehouse, and South Coast Rep. Diaz also was one of the creators of Brink!, the apprentice anthology show at the 2009 Humana Festival of New American Plays. He is a 2009-2010 Jerome Fellow, and a new playwright-in-residence at Teatro Vista.

Stoop Stories

Through October 11, 2009, 7:30 - 8:35pm
Sat. & Sun - 2pm Matinee

Dael Orlandersmith takes Chicago audiences on an electrifying journey through the spirit and soul of Harlem in her explosive solo piece Stoop Stories at Goodman Theatre. Hailed a "triumph" (Washington City Paper) in its world premiere at Washington, D.C.'s Studio Theatre this past spring, Stoop Stories comes to Chicago directed by Obie Award-winner Jo Bonney. Orlandersmith transforms with mesmerizing ease into a range of characters-from an elderly Polish Holocaust survivor who has a chance meeting with Billie Holiday; to a poetic young junkie; to a teenage Puerto Rican punk; to a washed-up rock 'n' roll star; to a 70-year-old New Yorker from Harlem heading to the West Village to see Nina Simone. "Experiencing the buzz Dael's powerful, haunting performance generated in Washington, D.C. while I was in town directing King Lear, I knew that Chicago needed to see Stoop Stories," said Artistic Director Robert Falls. "There is no other living American artist quite like Dael, whose astonishing body of muscular, vivid, lyrical work gives voice to characters whose stories are rarely heard. I am delighted to welcome Dael and her incredible director, my friend Jo Bonney, to the Goodman with this fantastic new play." [more]

UniverSoul Circus

Through October 18, 2009

The UniverSoul Circus Story By Cedric Walker Founder, President and CEO In 1994 the UniverSoul Circus was born. The vision was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer. We had the idea to present something different, to create a show that presented a wide spectrum of black talent to a wide demographic of spectators. To reach deep into our culture and search for what talent and skills lie asleep in the black entertainment experience. We wanted to apply our gathered years of experience in the live appearance industry, to make a difference, to change the industry we lived in, creating growth and new opportunity. Recruiting, training and production began in 1993. Three weeks before the opening, I paid a visit to the training facility. It was clear that the person we chose wasn't working out. After watching rehearsals all that flashed in my mind was possible the headlines: "FIRST BLACK CIRCUS. TIGER EATS TRAINER ON OPENING DAY." So I fired the guy. [more]

The Bronzeville Community Market, the first of its kind in the City of Chicago, will offer locally grown products as well as tropical produce, prepared foods, and a vibrant array of entertainment and community activities. This farmers' market is a joint project between Quad Communities Development Corporation (QCDC), a local non-profit organization, and the Mayor's Office of Special Events (MOSE). The market will feature a wide variety of fresh and organic fruits and vegetables; a selection of meats, cooking oils, honey, and wine; a range of baked goods and prepared foods; vendors selling plants, beauty products and other non-food items, and a variety of fair trade vendors in cooperation with the Chicago Fair Trade Association. Market goers can also visit a wellness area that will feature a chiropractor and health screenings provided by a local medical facility.
