UniverSoul Circus (Opening Week)

Through October 18, 2009

The UniverSoul Circus Story By Cedric Walker Founder, President and CEO In 1994 the UniverSoul Circus was born. The vision was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer. We had the idea to present something different, to create a show that presented a wide spectrum of black talent to a wide demographic of spectators. To reach deep into our culture and search for what talent and skills lie asleep in the black entertainment experience. We wanted to apply our gathered years of experience in the live appearance industry, to make a difference, to change the industry we lived in, creating growth and new opportunity. Recruiting, training and production began in 1993. Three weeks before the opening, I paid a visit to the training facility. It was clear that the person we chose wasn't working out. After watching rehearsals all that flashed in my mind was possible the headlines: "FIRST BLACK CIRCUS. TIGER EATS TRAINER ON OPENING DAY." So I fired the guy. [more]

Sat. & Sun - 2pm Matinee

Dael Orlandersmith takes Chicago audiences on an electrifying journey through the spirit and soul of Harlem in her explosive solo piece Stoop Stories at Goodman Theatre. Hailed a "triumph" (Washington City Paper) in its world premiere at Washington, D.C.'s Studio Theatre this past spring, Stoop Stories comes to Chicago directed by Obie Award-winner Jo Bonney. Orlandersmith transforms with mesmerizing ease into a range of characters-from an elderly Polish Holocaust survivor who has a chance meeting with Billie Holiday; to a poetic young junkie; to a teenage Puerto Rican punk; to a washed-up rock 'n' roll star; to a 70-year-old New Yorker from Harlem heading to the West Village to see Nina Simone. "Experiencing the buzz Dael's powerful, haunting performance generated in Washington, D.C. while I was in town directing King Lear, I knew that Chicago needed to see Stoop Stories," said Artistic Director Robert Falls. "There is no other living American artist quite like Dael, whose astonishing body of muscular, vivid, lyrical work gives voice to characters whose stories are rarely heard. I am delighted to welcome Dael and her incredible director, my friend Jo Bonney, to the Goodman with this fantastic new play." [more]

M Lounge Live Music - Petra Van Nuis

Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 7 - 10pm

Petra van Nuis (Paytra van Nouse) is a featured vocalist on the Chicago jazz scene. Inspired by such greats as Peggy Lee, Chris Connor, Lucy Ann Polk, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, and Beverly Kenney (just to name a few!), she opts for a straightforward swinging delivery with an emphasis on feeling. Relying only on the deep belief in the music she sings, her approach is simple and without affectation. Her warm intimate sound has just a touch of breathiness. Petra is a true romantic and the timeless music of the Great American Songbook is what inspires her creatively. She enjoys unearthing obscure songs and her extensive repertoire is both impressive and unique. While steeped in tradition, Petra expresses her originality in the best sense of the word, by being true to herself. This sincerity is felt by audiences and musicians alike. Petra is a musicians' singer who would rather focus on the music than on the spotlight. Wherever she sings, Petra connects with people.

Mojitos 101

Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Carnivale's expert mixologist, Victor Baheza, will lead this hands-on class featuring two different mouthwatering mojito recipes from Carnivale's signature drink menu. Participants will learn the history of this classic Cuban cocktail, while creating and sampling perfectly muddled mojitos and appetizers by Executive Chef, Mark Mendez.

Soleil's Take: Carnivalé's mojitos are among the best in the City (trust me, I've been conducting a little study) - so who better to learn from?!?! Here's my experience:, The private dining area was set up with 6 tables of 8. Each table held a fifth of Bacardi Light and Bacardi Razzmatazz, Mojito fixins and 8 gift bags (containing a muddler, an airline-sized bottle of Bacardi and a Mojito recipe book). (It used to be that each table would be supplied with their own bottles, but folks drank too much, apparently got a bit unruly and ruined it for the rest of us. Now, you'll get your Bacardi in shot glasses, but, it's still a great deal and a great time.) [more]

Fedra: Queen of Haiti (Preview)

Through November 15, 2009

Written by J Nicole Brooks
Directed by Laura Eason

The king is dead. The son is lost.
The queen is mad.
Desire threatens the kingdom, and survival hangs in the balance.

Our 22nd season opens with an explosive retelling of Phaedra that would make Euripides, Seneca and Jean Racine blush. This story of power and lust is set in a re-imagined Haiti that stands as the world's greatest superpower. Only the fiercely mischievous pen of Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks (Black Diamond) could so ignite the hidden power of this enduring myth. Award-winning Ensemble Member Laura Eason (Around the World in 80 Days) directs Lookingglass' 51st World Premiere.

The newspaper encouraged the migration of black southerners to Northern cities with a circulation of over 200,000. Pullman Porters aided the nationwide distribution.
