LEARN TO-DO IT! Back to School
Greetings!

Mom & MeHappy New Year to you!!  Personally, I'm waaaaaaaaaaaay excited about what this new year will bring and the resolutions I've made!  But, a resolution without a plan ain't nuthin' but a pipe dream.  Let your dreams give birth to reality by actually planning how to make your dreams come true!  Here are a few tips for the journey:

·      Put it in a Search Engine - Explore all resources that may be available to you, remembering that you can avoid reinventing the wheel!

·      Put it in Writing - Invest some time in determining the steps necessary to satisfy your resolution.  Establish benchmarks and "calendar" them with reminders.  Commit to a schedule or timetable because time has a funny way of slipping on past us while we're stuck on:  "I'll do it tomorrow.  For real."

·      Put it in your Face - Give yourself nurturing, gentle (or jarring, militaristic) visual or audio reminders of your resolutions or plan.  Use the screen-saver on your computer and change the message regularly; put a post-in on the fridge, TV, wallet or joystick (that's right - I don't even know what they're called these days!); send yourself e-mails with delivery scheduled for future dates.

·      Put it in its Place - That's right, prioritize!  If you know that your work day is crazy, unpredictable and of varying lengths, perhaps you should not schedule 6pm workouts.  If your resolutions are truly important to you, get real with it and resolve yourself to the sacrifices you may be required to make.

If or when you fall of the wagon, remember that there is no magic day to get back on.  Don't wait for "Monday," "the first" or even "tomorrow."  Yesterday, tomorrow was today!  To delay is only to give way to your doubts, your complacency and sometimes your fear.  Push through it, forgive yourself for the slip, dust yourself off and have at it!

The sooner you accomplish it, the longer you can enjoy it!  Make it a prosperous New Year!

Soleil's Pick!

Mature H.O.T Women's Winter Term

Mature H.O.T. WomenThe Mature H.O.T Women's Program liberates the spirit of the dancer to reign free in every cosmopolitan woman.  This workshop is designed to strengthen the body, challenge the mind, and nurture the soul through the synergy of modern, ballet and jazz techniques.

Soleil's Take: As part of my 2007 "exploration of creativity" mission, I decided to enroll in the Mature H.O.T. (Health-conscious, Optimistic and Triumphant) Women dance class with Deeply Rooted Productions. I expected to get a good workout and maybe acquire some grace, but the surprising part was the sense of freedom and the spiritual nurturing that I received. The classes (they had to add a second class because of overwhelming interest!) met once a week for two hours and was comprised of women aged from maybe 30 - 65. Each week was a beautiful and uplifting experience as I witnessed women of various sizes and shapes proudly move their bodies and become even more comfortable with themselves. Our instructors, who addressed us as "dancers" (yes, I am now a dancer!) from day one, were men who embodied grace and positivity and provided constant affirmations. The experience was so much more than I expected! [more - a slide show!]

Soleil's Pick!  Mojitos 101

Wednesday, January 14, 2009, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Carnivale's expert mixologist, Victor Baheza, will lead this hands-on class featuring two different mouthwatering mojito recipes from Carnivale's signature drink menu. Participants will learn the history of this classic Cuban cocktail, while creating and sampling perfectly muddled mojitos and appetizers by Executive Chef, Mark Mendez.

Soleil's Take: Carnivalé's mojitos are among the best in the City (trust me, I've been conducting a little study) - so who better to learn from?!?! Here's my experience:, The private dining area was set up with 6 tables of 8. Each table held a fifth of Bacardi Light and Bacardi Razzmatazz, Mojito fixins and 8 gift bags (containing a muddler, an airline-sized bottle of Bacardi and a Mojito recipe book). As people gradually arrived and took their seats, they were offered a choice of a pomegranate martini or lemon drop cocktail. (Need more libations? The bar is open - but hold on!! Your table will be well-stocked!) Then the appetizers began to arrive and circulate to the tables. Yum! Carnivalé serves great food - unusual and tasty combinations. Want more food? Sit at the table closest to the stairs! You can also purchase appetizers., The class was attended by couples and larger parties, young and old (but mostly 30-45) and varied ethnicities. It was presented in a fun fashion (could a Mojito class be dry?), but be attentive 'cuz you'll have an opportunity to when prizes. But the huge prize is an enormous gift basket (taller than many dwarfs) with ridiculous quantities of liquor, snacks, sweets and - just a whole lotta stuff! At the end of class - dessert was served. Nothing fancy - chocolate chip cookies and brownies - but homemade and tasty!, All this for $25!!!, Oh - wait! And mojitos! You'll make two different kinds during the class - regular and raspberry. It used to be that each table would be supplied with a bottle of Bacardi Light and Rassmatazz, but folks drank too much, apparently got a but unruly and ruined it for the rest of us. Now, you'll get your Bacardi in shot glasses, but, it's still a great deal and a great time. You've got to register early, because the class sells out quickly!

Price: $25
