UPCOMING TO-DOS
 Seasonal Events
Greetings, Sophisticate!

I've been tripping out about how much there is To-Do in this upcoming week! And that's because Chicago has it goin' on year round!! It's just that we've got to take it a little (okay - sometimes a lot) more indoors around this time of year. We're in that transitional period where we no longer hang around outside in a leisurely way, but we also want to make sure that we milk the warm weather down to the last little ounce.

So - here's something great To-Do: enjoy the beautiful colors of Fall at Starved Rock State Park! Just a little over an hour and a half from the City (or, so it seems from the directions) and you can:

Experience the fun of outdoor adventure at Starved Rock State Park. Whether you enjoy hiking along the nature trails or viewing the many spectacular overlooks along the Illinois River, recreational opportunities abound. From picnicking to fishing to boating, from horseback riding to camping to enjoying winter sports, there's so much To-Do [emphasis added :)] that you'll come back again and again.

Enjoy "The Colors of Fall" at Starved Rock - even on a cloudy day, it should be lovely! Take a break from the City (maybe even make it an overnighter) and give Starved Rock a try!

sno-gophers.orgGet ready to dive feet-first into the season - put down a deposit on a ski trip!  Sno-gophers is an African-American ski club that arranges local, national and international ski trips.  If you've never tried skiing before, start with a local trip.  I promise that it will be exhilarating!!!  Expect another season of local day trips to Wisconsin and more.  You'll also have a chance to participate in the National Brotherhood of Skiiers events - all with the wonderful camaraderie of avid and rookie skiers!  Visit www.Sno-Gophers.org for their meeting schedule and stay tuned to Soleil's To-Dos for all their upcoming trips!

Looking for something spooky To-Do? Soleil's To-Dos has a nice selection of Halloween To-Dos for the young and for the young at heart! Scroll down for some fun and spooky things To-Do for Halloween.  Be sure to also visit www.ChicagoParkDistrict.com for cool events in a neighborhood near you!

But there's so much more To-Do!  Don't believe me?  Visit
www.so-LAZE.com, take advantage of the interactive calendar features and make it a fabulous week!

Make it a fabulous weekend!
Stephanie!

THEATER REVIEW:  YOHEN

Lauren's Laudare
Lauren's Laudare

The Silk Road Theatre Project presents the Midwest premiere of Phillip Kan Gotanda's Yohen.  The Silk Road Theatre Project showcases playwrights of Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean backgrounds, whose works address themes relevant to the peoples of the Silk Road (the historical territory stretching from Japan to Italy) and their Diaspora communities.  SRTP aims to promote multi-cultural dialogue.  The project is a creative response to the September 11, 2001 attacks and the ant-Arab and anti-Muslim sentiments expressed in the aftermath of the attacks.

Yohen considers the marriage of James, an African American World War II vet, and Sumi, his Japanese war pride.  It is 1986 in Los Angeles and after 37 years together, Sumi wants to start all over.  She kicks James out and demands James to start dating her again.

Cheryl Hamada and Ernest Perry, Jr. by Michael BrosilowThe tensions in their marriage reach full tilt after James retires and spends essentially every waking moment watching sports, drinking beer and occasionally visiting the local gym to regale the kids of his glorious (embellished) boxing past.  James is a simple guy while Sumi seeks change and wants to explore the world.  She shows it by quitting her secretarial job of nearly 20 years and enrolling in college full time to study art.  Yohen, a Japanese pottery term, which encompasses the beauty of errors or unintended or unpredicted acts on thrown pots, is a metaphor for the marriage of James and Sumi.  While there is something essential and sturdy, there are also things that are not quite right.

In addition to demanding that James court her, she demands that he change.  Ultimately, James's changes are not quite good enough - even though he seems ultimately to be more evolved than Sumi.  Ironically, for all of Sumi's efforts, emotionally, her changes land her right where she started.

Potent as a saxophonist, flutist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and actor, Harlan Jefferson is a very dynamic, creative and soulful artist with a kind and beautiful heart. He explores new dimensions of contemporary jazz without relying simply on technique and gimmicks. Harlan has a way of sticking to the melody, while being spontaneous and exploring his soul with a combination of jazz, hip hop and funk. His music is delightfully soothing, as he extends voice-like sounds from his saxophone. The last year has seen Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist Harlan Jefferson moving onto the Chicago scene with his neo-soul group So So Tight. Caroline, or Change (Closing Week)

Court Theatre
5535 S. Ellis Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637
(773) 753-4472

Closing October 26, 2008

Playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and composer Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie) have elegantly crafted this bold and uniquely poignant musical. Kushner brings his remarkable literary talent to his first musical-there are no easy choices for the characters to make, and each role is fully realized, complicated and deeply human. The thunder of the civil rights movement and John F. Kennedy's death reverberates deeply through the script, provoking all characters to see their lives in a new light. Peter Marks of The Washington Post called Caroline, or Change "one of the most significant musicals to reach the New York stage in recent years." Richard Zoglin of Time proclaimed it a "breakthrough" that "almost seems to have discovered a new genre." [more]

A divorced Japanese woman and an African American GI meet in post-World War II Japan and fall in love. After decades of struggle, they have found an accepting Los Angeles suburb to call home - but their peaceful world is changing. More than a study of clashing cultures, Yohen is the poetic, resonant story of two partners who discover that intimate relationships change with environments - and love, however time-tested, is never constant., First produced by the East West Players in Los Angeles, Philip Kan Gotanda's Yohen is an alternately funny and bittersweet look at the intimacy of relationships-and at the subtle forces that change them.

All of their pursuits-musical, spiritual, or otherwise-are larger-than-life: not a single thing is left to chance. For them, there's simply no room for halfway, half-done, half-baked efforts. No matter the venture, the bar is always sky-high. Absolutely everything must be handled with an utmost sense of excellence., This commitment to greatness isn't novel for them. As far back as their breakout, career-defining first single, "Shackles (Praise You)" in 2000, Mary Mary have time and again gone for broke. Their landmark fifth album for Columbia Records, The Sound, is no different. Hands down, the project is their boldest, most complete work yet-a remarkable milestone in their now decade-long trajectory in music. [more]
