But there's so much more To-Do!! Lauren and I saw Superior Donuts last week and she shares her thoughts with you below in Lauren's Laudare. FaiÉ African Art invites you to their Opening Reception on July 17th and the Chicago Folk & Roots Festival is coming up this weekend - there'll be fun for the whole family! Soooooooo . . . Make it a fabulous weekend and forward this e-mail to a friend!

| LAUREN'S LAUDARE! Superior Donuts |
|
|
Pulitzer Prize winner, Tony Award winner and Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Tracy Letts succeeds once again in " Superior Donuts." On the surface, the play explores the unlikely relationship between an ageing Polish American, Vietnam War dodging hippie and donut shop owner and his sole employee, a hip hop Gen X, insightful, intelligent African American man. Dig down a few layers and it examines fundamental, existential themes - action vs. paralysis; struggle vs. defeat; past vs. future; loss vs. gain. When the play begins, donut shop owner Arthur is in a fog - he doesn't even know what day it is. He operates on auto pilot having essentially checked out of his life. He simply goes through the motions as he observes life going on around him. In a world of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, Arthur's donut shop is an anachronistic vestige of the past generally and particularly, the past of Chicago immigrants. New employee Franco, with his boundless energy, pragmatic optimism and ideas for rejuvenating the donut shop represents hope and promise and is a foil to the passive, inert Arthur. Franco inspires Arthur to check back into life, to let go of the past and move into the unknown future. In the journey from the pull of the past to the lure of the future, Arthur and Franco are joined by a cast of colorful characters who embody the tensions and aspirations of the racially and ethnically diverse people of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood.
This play is poignant and moving without being heavy. You will enjoy yourself! The play is hilarious with strong writing and great comic timing and delivery. The play is delivered in a tight, sparse style rather than the big, bold and in your face approach for which live, dramatic theatre is known. Those who are not big theatre goers, or who could take or leave a live performance, will enjoy this very accessible play. While it is accessible, it is subtle and touching. The soft touch of the play delivers a lot more than one thinks at first glance.
Ultimately, "Superior Donuts" is about the power of human relationships to inspire and the resiliency of the human spirit. The uplifting story of "Superior Donuts" is well worth your time.
© 2008 - Unauthorized use is prohibited. Superior Donuts runs through August 24th. Twenty $20 tickets are available at Audience Services beginning at 11:00 a.m. on the day of each performance (1:00 p.m. for Sunday performances). Half-price rush tickets are available one hour before each show.

This To-Do is definitely worth checking out! I finally made it this month and thoroughly enjoyed it. In addition to a wide range of art and mediums, you'll find different vibes goin' on at the many varied galleries - but there's some sort of party at every stop. You may find a special deal on the application of eyelash extensions, accessories, provocative clothing, a DJ rockin' old school beats so hard that the art clings to the walls for dear life, or perhaps a quiet, ambient vibe. There's something for everyone, so expect to see a great diversity of age and race! |

Soleil's Take:
I haven't been out to CCHT yet (it is, afterall, in a suburb), but a few questions come immediately to mind: (1) $45-65 is a lot of loot to sit on the lawn - is that grass padded or sumthin'? (2) No outside concessions?!?! That kinda takes the fun out of picnic-ing, doesn't it? Will I get out there and find $6 hotdogs and a $17 glass of white zinfandel and a $3 can of RC Cola? (3) How come Ravinia is sooooo much cheaper and let's you bring your own stuff? (4) You can't bring your own chair - you must rent one there? Come on, now - we must be up to $75 already - just to be on the lawn!
Tickets are generally $50-95, reserved seating; $45-65, lawn; $12-35, city hall lawn and pavillion seating. Visit the website for specific pricing and to purchase and print tickets. | |

Soleil's Take:
The dance floor has gotten a little tight as this To-Do has grown in popularity, but it's still a fun time! Look out for other SummerDance listings at 63rd Street Beach, Navy Pier, Athletic Field Park and Humboldt Park Boathouse! The view is beautiful at each of the locations, so get out there - and don't be afraid to try a new style of music and dance. |
