Late Night TV Shows Are Doing Well
While the glitzy after-dinner television shows still draw the most crowds, late-night and early-morning television are growing more in viewership. Studies by Adgate and Nielsen show that many more people watch early-morning and late-night shows than watched them 10 years ago. Some advertising executives say the presidential election helped. The immediacy of such programs and the way the day's events become fodder for late-night jokes played a role. Saturday Night Live saw its total audience rise by more than 60 percent. Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report posted huge gains. Ad executives say that prime time shows hold viewers' attention during breaks more than morning or night shows.

Night Shift Advice
A study by the University of Athens Medical School shows that noise over 35 decibels (hardly louder than a whisper) can raise your blood pressure even if it doesn't wake you up. Aircraft noise was one of the worst offenders, even though it was no more than 35 decibels in the sleeper's room. It raised systolic blood pressure by more than six points and diastolic pressure by about seven. It suggests that noise during your sleep can lead to hypertension. If you live in a loud area or if you are a night shift worker and there is noise in the house during the day, researchers recommend wearing ear plugs.

Garden Spots Can Be Inspirational
A tiny garden can bring you closer to nature as you tend the plants with special care and watch them grow. It could be a niche in a corner of the yard, a raised bed of flowers or vegetables, a window box or two or a con-tainer garden on the deck. In any case, the compact garden takes less time and work. The satisfaction comes from working with each individual plant. For most flowers and vegetables, consider a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade. If your place is shady, search for shade-loving plants with greenery or fl owers that may be planted under an ornamental tree. Adding a wooden bench or chair will give you a place to relax in your niche. You could add a sundial, a birdbath or trellises for your climbing vines. Men particularly enjoy building a rose garden. A rose garden costs a little more to start, but with proper care the roses will come back bigger and more beautiful with each passing year. Roses are very attractive as they bloom in sunny niches, raised beds, or even when growing in wooden wine barrels from the garden store. Container gardening is a pleasant alternative to having a garden in the yard. Containers come in all shapes and sizes. They can be put on trays with wheels so you can move them whenever you want. Or they can be put on stands to make a more dramatic statement. And you don't need "mud shoes" to tend them after a rain. Plastic containers require less water than clay pots. Soil in clay pots dries out faster.

FIVE STEPS TO BEING MORE IMPORTANT ON THE JOB

Whether you are the boss, the programmer or the assistant's assistant, being more important than you think you are is pleasant to think about. What's nice about it is that you don't have to get a promotion or get reassigned in order to reach that goal. Even better, the organization would love to have you be indispensable.
That might be the case right now, but to increase your importance even more, consider this advice: 1. Get visible. Small stuff counts, such as face time. Arrive a little early, leave a few minutes later than everyone else, and speak up at a meeting. Big stuff counts more. Volunteer for an assignment no one wants. 2. Be a problem solver.. Search for ideas that help the company or the company's clients. When you can help customers or clients, you will be indispensable. 3. Don't complain. If you have in the past, get an attitude adjustment to the positive side now, says Alexandra Levit, author of How'd You Score That Gig: A Guide to the Coolest Jobs and Careers. Your manager has enough problems and you shouldn't be one of them. Complaining defInitely won't make you moreimportant. 4. Give the true information. During diffi cult times, the boss needs to know the truth about how the business is running. Tell it very carefully. 5. Take a class. Consider an area in which the organization needs help, such as running a "green" business. In these times, being a faithful employee, though marginal, is not enough. We all have to do more.

Mindful Meditation: Five Minutes to Better Health

"Mindfulness meditation" is the act of paying close attention to your thoughts, feelings, actions and body sensations in an objective, non-attached way.
Pain: Doctors at the University of Wisconsin say meditation is a proven pain reliever because pain has emotional and cognitive aspects. When you recognize pain with kind, non-judgmental attention, special areas of the brain produce fewer signals that are interpreted as pain.
Just five minutes of mindfulness meditation can be helpful.
Anxiety and depression: Meditation decreases anxiety by 44 percent and symptoms of depression by 34 percent, say doctors at the University of Wisconsin.
Subjects who took an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program had more brain chemicals associated with a happy, calm state after taking the course. The mediators also had higher immunity scores.
Stress: Doctors quoted in Prevention say mindful walking is a successful stress reliever. Pick a quiet place in your home and walk slowly back and forth or in circles. Look ahead and focus on how one foot makes contact with the ground, your weight shifts, and the other foot lifts and moves forward. Keep your mind on your feet. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. A 10-minute session is recommended.
To find a course in mindfulness-based stress reduction in your area, visit Center for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts Medical School. MBSR is technically defined as a common form of complementary medicine addressing both physical health and emotional wellbeing.

The Front Room Can Be Changed to Create A New Area In Your Home.
These are changing times.
New home designs and remodeling plans are calling for a large room at the back of the house. It combines the kitchen, dining area and space for entertaining family and guests.
Because new homes may not be as large as they were a decade ago, the formal living room, which was rarely used anyway, is giving way to more useful designations.
The front room, with or without a door, is usually located right off the front entry or hall. But, according to planner Debbie Travis, that doesn't mean it couldn't be used for a den, offi ce, workroom or reading room.
It can be an attractive addition to your home, depending on how you furnish and decorate the room. If it's an offi ce, for example, splurge on a beautiful, modern desk and hang artwork on the wall.
If it's a reading room, fi nd a couple of great chairs and pair them with fi ne lamps. Anyone viewing these rooms from the entry way will be pleased and impressed.
It's true that hobby rooms or workrooms can become cluttered, but a dramatic screen can hide the clutter and enhance the appearance of the room at the same time.
If sewing is your hobby, dress up your mannequin. Have a long cutting table and stack fabrics attractively on shelves in the background.
Using the front room to demonstrate your interests can impress visitors.

Summer Insects Can Be Dangerous
There are good bees all around the country. European honey bees pollinate fl owers and crops and are generally benefi cial creatures. Gardeners often invite them into their yards by adding nectar-rich plants to their landscapes. But another type of bee could be a killer.Africanized honey bees. If you live in Florida, some dangerous characters may be moving into your neighborhood. Their stings could be fatal. When you know these killer bees may be in your area, have an escape route planned in case they attack. Go indoors or to a car. The Florida Department of Agriculture cautions against attempting to remove any bee colony yourself. Call an exterminator.Fire ants. They are also found in the South. If they have been recognized in your area, be careful not to disturb their nesting sites. Wear protective boots where fi re ants are suspected. To get rid of them, spread bait products that the ants carry back to their nests.Ticks carrying Lyme disease. These pests are more common in colder climes. If they are suspected in your area, use pesticides and repellents. Spray repellents on your boots and clothing. People who have been in the woods should inspect themselves, their clothing and their pets for ticks.West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes: The Illinois Department of public health says you should remember the "Five Ds" of mosquito avoidance.* Dusk until dawn. Limit time spent outdoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.* Drain any standing water where mosquitoes could lay eggs.* Dress appropriately. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when you're in mosquito country.* Doors and barriers. Install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes from entering.* DEET. Apply an insect repellent containing DEET if you will be outdoors for very long. |

Kylie Minogue Admits to BOTOX
Aussie singer Kylie Minogue has admitted to using Botox in the past, but states that she's now "a lot more natural." According to the Mirror:"I'm defi nitely not one of those people who says, 'You shouldn't do this.' Everyone individually can do what they want. "I also think it doesn't have the stigma that it had when I was growing up. For all time women have wanted to, for the most part, look their best. It's just that what we have available to us today is - what it is today. I'm preferring to be a lot more natural these days. I've tried Botox, I've tried all... You're damned if you do and damned if you don't."I've always thought that she displayed a bit of the Botox brow, like her fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman, however her brows have always been a bit over-arched. Botox or not, she does look great at 40! Other celebrities admiting to botox are: Brooke Shields, Vanessa Williams, Lisa Rinna, Lori Loughlin, Daisy Fuentes, Jenny McCarthy, Jennie Garth, David Hasselhoff, Simon Cowell, Linda EvangelistaJanice Dickinson, Courteney Cox Arquette and Teri Hatcher.

SPRING 2009 - ZOE MAY -- LONG WEEKEND
Hello dear fans of mine:
I am a great big fan of mother's day and father's day. It's a great day to go out and spoil them rotten.
I don't remember my mother or my father, since i was really little when I was bought by Dr. Schlosser and his family but, i do consider Judy my mother and Dr. Steve my father. She cares for me like a mother should, she feeds me, washes me and gives me unconditional love, even when i don't deserve it. He walks me and nuzzles me and lets me sleep next to him at night. For him I can do no wrong. Last week was one of those times when I got a little naughty. I was left with some really tasty garbage and I couldn't help myself. She told me not to eat it, but I couldn't hold back. When she got home, she scowled at me. Shortly after, she gave me a hug saying: "You know I still love you, right?" I definitely knew this.
So for mother's day and father's day this year, I am getting what any other dog loving parent would like to get. I have a stash of raw-hide bones and muddy stuffed animals in the yard that i'm sure they'll appreciate. I will bring them into the house on their special days (May 10 for Judy and June 21 for Dr. Steve) and sneak them up to their room and wake them up with a new toy to play with. Hey? What is love for?
Not sure if your parents are raw-hide bone or dirty stuffed animal collectors, check out www.AvantiBoulder.com for many other suggestions on packages and products. Even though it's a little past mother's day, it's never too late! - ZOE
P.S. What do you think of my new column "Zoe's Paw Prints"? Email us at boulder@avanticenters.com with a detailed critique and you could win a surprise package from Dr. Schlosser's office.
