President Peter
A reminder to all that our Club meeting which would normally be held December 27 has been cancelled.  Our next Club meeting will be Tuesday, January 10, 2012.

Our first Board meeting of the new year will be Wednesday, January 4.

A new leadership team will be starting soon, watch for the upcoming announcement.

Our Club has been approached to assist with Christmas Hampers at a local school.  This has been discussed by the Board and will be presented to Club members at the meeting on December 13.

The final day at the Christmas Tree Lot will be December 23rd and all Club members and volunteers are invited to join us there for our traditional moose milk wrap-up.

On behalf of the Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton Board of Directors, I would like to send along greetings for the Christmas season and best wishes to all for a safe and happy 2012.

Yours in Service,
Peter Harrop

Kiwanis Buy Nothing Day Free Market
On Friday, November 25, and Saturday, November 26, the Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton held its 4th Annual Kiwanis Buy Nothing Day Free Market.

The Market was a great success.  Some of the observations:
  • the best ever Buy Nothing Day of the past four years
  • more people dropped in and found new homes for more stuff than ever
  • location was great - central
  • lots of walk in traffic from the artist's event down the hall
  • many people suggested what a great idea this was
  • we should consider doing it more often
  • we were able to help more people who needed/appreciated it
  • way less stuff left over at the end than before
There was a young lady, recently moved to Edmonton, who was thrilled to find some pots and pans.  As well, a recent immigrant was able to pick up some warm clothes for her family.

Thanks to all those who volunteered, donated, and collected.

See You Next Time!
Reading Is Fundamental

There are no dates in December as it is a bit busy for them but we have the following:

  •  Wednesday Jan 18th 9:45 am to 10:30 am
  •  Thursday Jan 26th 1:45 pm to 2:30 pm
  •  Wednesday Feb 15th 9:45 am to 10:30 am
  •  Wednesday Feb 22nd  1:45 pm to 2:30 pm
  •  Wednesday March 7th 9:45 am to 10:30 am
  •  Wednesday March 14th 1:45 pm to 2:30 pm

This will include passing the books out to the children, reading and partaking in the snack that the club provides.

If members wish to participate in the reading they are more than welcome. There are around 18 kids so if I can have at least 3 members everyone gets a group to read to (we end up reading all the books to those in the individual group). The key is to have at least 3 to 4 members. Any less and it would take too long to read everyone's book.

Address Norwood Community Centre - Headstart Program 9516 - 114 Avenue.
