President's Pen
| We are wrapping up a busy Kiwanis summer with events and happenings at the international, district and local level. Deborah and I had the honour of representing the Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton at the International Convention in Geneva in early July. Also present from South Edmonton were Past Governor Colin Reichle, Lt Governor Richard Le Sueur, Past Lt Governor Wayne Rogers and Past CKI International Trustee Ali Grotkowski. As well as conducting Kiwanis business, we were in Geneva to support Roy Bird in his quest to become Kiwanis International Vice President. Unfortunately it was not to be, with Gunter Gasser of Austria becoming the successful candidate. Congratulations to Mr Gasser. A huge thank you to Roy for stepping forward to once again represent all of us at the International level. A very exciting part of the Geneva Convention was the formal roll-out of ELIMINATE, the Kiwanis world-wide service project. Teamed up with UNICEF, Kiwanis International is working to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. More details are below. Earlier this month I attended the Kiwanis Western Canada District Summer Convention in Red Deer. Kudos to the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer for a great convention. Also attending from South Edmonton were Dirk Bannister, Dick Proctor, Wayne Rogers, Brian Charanduk, Kim Gee, Colin Reichle and Richard Le Sueur. Kiwanians from across Western Canada were joined by International Trustee Jane Erickson (and husband Gus), from the Nebraska-Iowa District, as well as Jack Harten (and wife Jackie), President of the Kiwanis International Foundation, and Bill Parker, Director of Finance at Kiwanis International. We welcomed Cory Johnson as he was installed as District Governor for 2011-12 and thanked Lori Beneteau upon her installation as Immediate Past Governor. Congratulations to Club member Richard Le Sueur as he was installed as Western Canada Governor Elect for 2011-12.
Congratulations also to Colin Reichle upon his election as International Trustee Designate for Canada. He will be installed at the International Convention in New Orleans in June 2012. Astrid Minnick, from the Kiwanis Club of Dawson Creek, was installed as Division Six Lt Governor for 2011-12, taking over from Richard Le Sueur. Welcome Astrid, we look forward to working with you in the coming year. In July I was joined by Kim Gee, Dick Proctor, Barry Headrick and Richard Le Sueur at the Annual Open House for Camp He Ho Ha. Another great afternoon at this wonderful facility. We have a project next weekend at St Anne Elementary School (detailed below) and are back on September 13th with our first meeting of the Fall. Invite a friend to join us and lets expand our world of acquaintances.
Yours in service,
Peter Harrop

Who We Are
|
The Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton serves the City of Edmonton and beyond.
With a motto of "We Build", a focus of "Children Priority One", our purpose is "To Collectively Serve Our Community" by doing projects and programs directed to children, the handicapped and the disadvantaged amongst us.
We fundraise to finance projects that will make our community a better and safer place to live and focus our limited resources efficiently and effectively on doing things that are needed, but not normally offered or done by anyone else.
Once the fundraising is done, we then get actively involved in the project by providing as much of the hands-on work as possible, thereby creating a "full service" atmosphere for our members.

Club Project - Outdoor Classroom Planters, St Anne Elementary School | On Saturday, August 27, 2011, starting at 9:00 am, Club members and other volunteers under the direction of Dan O'Keefe, will gather to construct six planters as part of an outdoor classroom at St Anne Elementary School.
Depending upon the number of participants, the work should take 3 to 4 hours to complete. As mentioned, six boxes will be constructed using 4x4s and 2x6s, and will be approximately 3 feet wide by 6 feet long. The wood will be previously rough-cut to the proper length, but some minor adjustments will be required during actual fabrication.
If you have not already, please let Dan know ASAP if you will be coming to assist and if you are bringing any tools. The following tools will be helpful: drill and/or circular saw (preferably battery operated), hammer and picks, shovels or gravel rakes.
St Anne Elementary School is located at 14105 94 Street NW, Edmonton. Click here for map. |

A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leadership-it comes from helping others succeed.
There will be a Kiwanis Key Leader Weekend at the Birch Bay Ranch, in Sherwood Park, from September 30 to October 2, 2011.

The Kiwanis World-Wide Service Project
|

There are few events more joyful than the day a new baby is welcomed to the world. But in 38 countries, a dreaded disease quickly turns that joy into tragedy.
Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes - that's 60,000 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating - tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of women die from MNT each year too.
