President's Pen
|
For this issue of the Kiwanian South I am trying a new format to talk to you, the members of the Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton. Instead of the President's Pen I am introducing the " Pres Says". Enjoy. Yours In Service, Peter Harrop Remember -

Clubs Joining Forces
|
With the start of the new Kiwanis year, the Kiwanis Club of Edmonton - Young Professionals, had reached the difficult decision to close their club due to low membership numbers. That being said, all of the remaining members applied for transfer to the Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton. At their September meeting the South Edmonton Board voted unanimously to accept all the transfer applications.
We welcome Ali Grotkowski, Angela Schubert, Beth Storheim, Kevin Chan and David Mah to our club and look forward to your valuable thoughts and ideas as we move forward.
As part of the clubs coming together the Young Professionals made two donations to South Edmonton, one to the Club administration fund and one to the Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton Charitable Foundation. Pictured is Beth Storheim presenting the cheques to President Peter Harrop at our last club meeting.

Safety City Clean-Up Day
|
The Kiwanis Club of
South Edmonton will be doing a fall spruce-up at Safety City on Saturday, 25 September
commencing at 0900 AM. Activities will consist of sign straightening,
painting, spreading of top soil and grass seed, tree pruning and such.
This is an excellent opportunity for current and prospective members, family
and friends to gather in support of a very worthwhile project. We ask
those who plan to attend to dress comfortably in working clothes and to bring any of the following if they are able: work
gloves, shovel, rake (gravel or grass), wheel-barrow, hammer and the like.
The folks at the Alberta Safety Council will support our efforts and will host
us to a BBQ lunch.
So, please spread the word. Those who plan to attend to please let Dan O'Keefe know by September 23 to allow
for meal planning as well as planning the work for the day.
Kiwanis Safety City is located at 4831 93 Avenue, Edmonton (map).

Club Projects
| Kiwanis Christmas Tree Lot Plans are well underway for this year's Christmas Tree Lot. Once again this project, in its 60th year, is under the able stewardship of Dan O'Keefe. Now is the time to start thinking of when you will volunteer at the lot. Last year this project brought in more than $25,000 to be used for club programs.
Salvation Army Kettle Once more this year we will be assisting the Salvation Army as they raise funds for the needy. Details will be forthcoming.
Terrific Kids & Reading Is Fundamental Our club is currently looking after seven schools for Terrific Kids and does regular Reading is Fundamental sessions in the inner city. Are you involved in these programs? Try it, you will like it.
St Anne School Outdoor Classroom This project is the development of a outdoor classroom at St Anne School with trees, planters, benches designed to create a unique learning environment. Currently in the planning stage, more details will be available soon.

Today's Quote

Unity, not uniformity, must be our aim. We attain unity only through
variety. Differences must be integrated, not annihilated, not absorbed. ~ Mary Parker Follett

|
The Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton serves the City of Edmonton and beyond.
With a motto of "We Build", a focus of "Children
Priority One", our purpose is "To Collectively Serve Our Community" by
doing projects and programs directed to children, the handicapped and
the disadvantaged amongst us. We fundraise to finance projects that will
make our community a better and safer place to live and focus our
limited resources efficiently and effectively on doing things that are
needed, but not normally offered or done by anyone else. Once the fundraising is done, we then get actively involved in the project by providing as much of the hands-on work as possible, thereby creating a "full service" atmosphere for our members.
