President's Pen

Although there were not a great many meetings, summer has been very busy for a number of South Edmonton Club members as well as Kiwanians from across Division Six and the Western Canada District..
There was the Kiwanis International Convention in Las Vegas at the end of June, the 50th Anniversary of Camp He Ho Ha, also at the end of June. In July members assisted the Downtown Club with the Kiwanis Slide at Capital Ex. In August off we went to Helena, Montana for the Joint Western Canada/Montans District Conventions and then we wrapped up the month with a well-attended Club BBQ. At the BBQ, three new members were introduced to the club. Welcome to new member Barry Headrick, former Key Clubber Karen Chinaleong-Brooks and transferring in from another club is Western Canada District Secretary Dirk Bannister.
Our next meeting, on September 14, will feature a review, and highlights, from both the Kiwanis International Convention and the Western Canada District Convention. The presenters will be Wayne Rogers, Richard Le Sueur and myself. See you there.
Yours In Service, Peter Harrop

New Kiwanis Year - New Kiwanis Leaders
|
Kiwanis International
Incoming International President Sylvester Neal "fired up" delegates at the International Convention in Las Vegas. Outgoing International President Paul Palazollo received wide recognition for his leadership over the past year.
Western Canada District Over the past year Governor Richard "Dick" Southworth travelled extensively and met an astonishing number of Kiwanis Family members from Dawson Creek to Thunder Bay to Swift Current, and a whole bunch in between. Under Dick's leadership clubs across the district are working to move forward in their efforts to grow membership. Taking the reins from Dick is Lori Beneteau, our first female governor, ready to work with her team and take the district to the next level of development. Backing Lori up is Cory Johnson, Governor Elect. Those who know Cory are aware that he is a very focussed Kiwanian.

Local Kiwanian Aims High
|
At the end of the Western Canada District Kiwanis House of Delegates in Helena, Montana, came an announcement that was met with a resounding roar of approval.
Roy Bird, Past Kiwanis International Trustee, announced his candidacy for the position of Kiwanis International Vice President. Roy will run for this auspicious position at the Kiwanis International Convention to be held in Geneva, Switzerland in early July 2011.
Meanwhile in Montana, later the same day, International Trustee Pam Fleming, from the Alabama District, announced Roy's intent at the Joint Governor's Banquet, once again resulting in a resounding roar, this time from the combined Western Canada and Montana Districts.
Roy is currently a member of the Kiwanis Club of Edmonton an honourary member of the Kiwanis Club of Sherwood Park. He has served as Western Canada District Governor, Division Six Lt Governor and President of the Kiwanis Club of Edmonton.
The Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton is proud to support Roy and also honoured that Past District Governor Colin Reichle has accepted the position of Campaign Manager and that District Secretary Dirk Bannister will be the Campaign Fundraising Chair.

Safety City Clean-Up Day
|
The Kiwanis Club of
South Edmonton will be doing a fall spruce-up at Safety City on Saturday, 25 September
commencing at 0900 AM. Activities will consist of sign straightening,
painting, spreading of top soil and grass seed, tree pruning and such.
This is an excellent opportunity for current and prospective members, family
and friends to gather in support of a very worthwhile project. We ask
those who plan to attend to dress comfortably in working clothes and to bring any of the following if they are able: work
gloves, shovel, rake (gravel or grass), wheel-barrow, hammer and the like.
The folks at the Alberta Safety Council will support our efforts and will host
us to a BBQ lunch.
So, please spread the word. Those who plan to attend to please let Dan O'Keefe know by September 23 to allow
for meal planning as well as planning the work for the day.
Kiwanis Safety City is located at 4831 93 Avenue, Edmonton (map).

Today's Quote
|
The major
difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly
go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong, it
usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair. - Douglas Adams (1952 -
2001)

The Kiwanis Club of South Edmonton serves the City of Edmonton and beyond.
With a motto of "We Build", a focus of "Children
Priority One", our purpose is "To Collectively Serve Our Community" by
doing projects and programs directed to children, the handicapped and
the disadvantaged amongst us. We fundraise to finance projects that will
make our community a better and safer place to live and focus our
limited resources efficiently and effectively on doing things that are
needed, but not normally offered or done by anyone else. Once the fundraising is done, we then get actively involved in the project by providing as much of the hands-on work as possible, thereby creating a "full service" atmosphere for our members.
