Dear FACETS Friends,

Thank you for your support!  This has been a very busy month for FACETS.  Not only did our 6th successful year of the Hypothermia Prevention Response program conclude, in which we sheltered more than 230 homeless singles throughout the brutal winter months, we also successfully moved five homeless families into apartments during March Move-in Madness, as well as four homeless singles.  We are also in the process of moving an additional five homeless singles into apartments in the next week!

Click
newspaperhere to read about March Move-in Madness in a recent article from the Fairfax Times, which describes our new program, Linda's Gateway.  Thanks to the support of hundreds of donors, FACETS was able to move five homeless families into apartments during the weekend of March 20th!  Thank you to everyone who helped!!  Keep scrolling down in the E-newsletter to learn about how you can help advocate on behalf of homeless families and singles in Fairfax.

We would also like to extend our thanks to the thousands of individuals who helped to make this year's Hypothermia Prevention Response program so successful.  Thanks to these dedicated souls, there were no hypothermia related deaths this winter and the homeless men and women who would otherwise have been suffering out in the woods or in their cars were given hot meals and shelter every single night this winter.  In addition, this year FACETS offered case management services and life skills classes to help the guests in their efforts to become self-sufficient.  More than 100 people participated, attending classes and working with FACETS' case managers to find stable housing options.  On March 27th, FACETS held a Hypother
Hypo appreciation eventmia Prevention Response Appreciation ceremony for all of the volunteers and faith communities that participated in this season's program.  We hope you were able to make it!  It was a great event, featuring client speakers, Congressman Gerry Connolly, Supervisors Catherine Hudgins and Penelope Gross, Delegate Vivian Watts, FACETS' staff, volunteers, and delicious food donated from local restaurants!

Additionally, FACETS has a new logo!  Please check out our website to see our new "look!"

For more information about FACETS, please visit FACETS' website for up-to-date volunteer opportunities, pantry needs, and ways to contribute financially.  Thank you for your support!

All the best,

The FACETS Family

The Advocacy Corner: How you can help

The recession has impacted budget discussions at both the state and local levels.  Tough choices are being made at the same time that the needs of our children and working families are growing. Many of the reductions adopted at the state level - since few fees or revenue options were on the table - will have a drastic impact on children living in poverty, working families, and individuals with mental health problems, as well as impacting education and healthcare.

The Fairfax County Proposed Budget uses a balanced approach through reasonable revenue and spending reductions that emphasizes core human services that matter to all of us. The budget has reserves to mitigate the impact of some state cuts and to plan for additional human service emergencies.

The "Housing Blueprint" (click here), if fully funded by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, will continue our County's commitment to meet the housing needs of all of our citizens. For FY2011, the Blueprint focuses on those with the greatest need, such as meeting the goals set in the Ten Year Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness (Office to Prevent and End Homelessness website) and providing housing to homeless and at risk families/individuals, while also emphasizing workforce housing and the need to fund projects in the pipeline.  The Housing Blueprint is a critical piece in the continued economic recovery and growth of our County.

Providing stable housing first is at the core of the recent success of FACETS' Hypothermia program and the recent move of five families into housing. We must continue as a community to meet the affordable housing needs of our neighbors as we seek to build a strong and diverse community.

Please contact your Board of Supervisors in support of their balanced approached and ask them to fully fund the Housing Blueprint (Board of Supervisors contact info).

FACETS' March Move-In Madness Success!!

Thank you to everyone who helped during March Move-In Madness during which FACETS moved five families into apartments in our new program, Linda's Gateway!!  With the help of hundreds of donors and about 60 volunteers who bruce, amanda, mauradonated their time and physical strength, FACETS moved the families into five furnished apartments where they will live for the next few months while working closely with our case managers to find stable housing.

Familie
s, like the Nafees (pictured below), had been living in a motel room for the past several months while they awaited shelter at one of the homeless shelters in Fairfax Countbruce, amanda, mauray.  There are currently more than 100 families on the shelter waiting list, however, through a partnership with Fairfax County and other local nonprofits, FACETS will be working closely with these families to help them avoid the shelters altogether and instead move directly into housing.

Thank you to everyone who helped make March Move-In Madness a success!!
