Dear FACETS Friends,

Thank you for your support!  As many of you know, FACETS' staff and volunteers have been very busy this month trying to keep our clients safe and warm.  February's record-breaking snow storms and frigid temperatures brought many challenges but due to our strong partnerships and dedicated volunteers, FACETS was able to provide critical assistance, shelter and hot meals to the men and women who might otherwise have been suffering through the storms in tents or in their cars.   The dedication of FACETS' Hot Meals and Hypothermia volunteers over the past month has been truly inspiring and we are so fortunate to have the support of so many giving souls.

In addition to providing Supportive Housing and Emergency Services for people who are homeless in Fairfax, FACETS offers a wide array of Education and Community Development programs year-round that focus on eviction prevention, educational classes, and enrichment opportunities for low-income youth and adults living in three affordable housing communities in Fairfax.

We rely on hundreds of dedicated volunteers to help us run these programs. The following testimony is from one of FACETS' volunteers who leads Girl Power, which is a program that focuses on middle and high school at-ris
bruce, amanda, maurak youth and enhances their self-confidence, improves problem solving-skills, allows them to explore their interest, and improves participants' awareness and ability to avoid risky behaviors.

"I have been fortunate enough to experience the power and positive impact of FACETS' Education and Community Development (ECD) Programs.  Three years ago I began volunteering with the remarkable young ladies of the Girl Power Senior Program at Ragan Oaks.  I am extremely proud to be engaged in a program that empowers young women by creating unique opportunities for the girls to learn and grow.

The program promotes career options, community involvement, health & wellness, appreciation for the arts, as well as educational resources.  It provides a safe and comfortable place to share adolescence struggles, and talk about ways to handle the stresses and the tough choices that they are confronted with daily.  I have seen a growth in confidence, better communication, and decision making, as well as an increased sense of community responsibility.  I couldn't be more proud!

I am blessed to be a part of these beautiful young women's lives.  They challenge me.  They inspire me.  They make me laugh... and laugh some more.  They are simply wonderful and I love watching them mature."  -- A FACETS volunteer

All the best,

A Helping Hand:
FACETS Makes a Difference

Doreen is a single mother with six children residing in the Robinson Square Community, an affordable housing community that FACETS serves. While on maternity leave in late 2008, Doreen's position was eliminated and she was laid off from her job in the auto industry. Doreen has struggled to secure employment and still remains unemployed today. However, FACETS has provided a number of supportive services to Doreen's family to keep them stabilized during this period. Doreen herself has received many employment leads and information on job fairs. When her car broke, FACETS helped pay part of her bill in order to keep her employment search on and her children transported to medical appointments and afterschool activities. One of Doreen's sons works closely with a FACETS volunteer who tutors and supports him in his special scholarship program. Additionally, the family has been given donations from FACETS supporters, such as children's furniture and special holiday sponsorships. In an e-mail to Doreen's case worker she wrote, "I know I've told you this before but I can never repay what you do for my family but I REALLY do appreciate how you try, try, and try. That means so much to me and I don't tell you enough....Thanks... for everything that you have did for my family, I'm the type who doesn't go to anyone for help but I feel comfortable talking to you..."
