Dear FACETS Friends,

Happy New Year!  Thank you for all of your support for FACETS and for helping us meet the growing needs of the thousands of families and singles who are homeless in Fairfax County.

FACETS is very grateful to our Thanksgiving and December donors for putting together and delivering food and gift baskets for 485 clients, even through the "Snowpocalypse" in December.  You helped brighten the holidays with your time and generosity.  Thank you so much!

We are very excited to announce that last week we helped three people who had been staying in FACETS' Hypothermia Prevention Response Program move into their own apartments!  These are individuals who were literally homeless, despite having jobs, and just needed some extra assistance and guidance to help them get back on their feet.  As part of the Housing Opportunity Support Teams (HOST), we were able to access some of the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing stimulus funds to help with their move-in costs and short term rental assistance.  FACETS is proud to be working with the Office to Prevent and End Homelessness as we take steps to move the Ten Year Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness into action. Keep scrolling down to learn more about these great success stories!

FACETS would like to dedicate this e-newsletter to Deputy County Executive Verdia Haywood, who retired on January 19th.  He has led Fairfax County's Human Services department since 1981 and  we would like to extend our gratitude to him for diligently working to improve the county's social services throughout his tenure.  His dedication to Fairfax's neediest residents has touched the lives of a countless number of families and individuals and he will truly be missed.  We wish him all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for everything he has done to enhance FACETS' partnership with the County so that we can all work together to better assist the neediest in our community.

For more information about FACETS, please visit FACETS' website for up-to-date volunteer opportunities, pantry needs, and ways to contribute financially.  Thank you for your support!

All the best,

The FACETS Family

Home Sweet Home:
A FACETS Success Story!

Sharon*, a Hypothermia client and one of the individuals who moved into her own apartment last week, lost her job a few months ago and despite quickly getting another job as a waitress, was unable to keep up with her rent.  She rented a storage unit in Fairfax, where she kept her belongings, and often ended up sleeping there because she had nowhere to go.  She began coming to FACETS' Hypothermia program in November, but because her job as a waitress necessitated her working late into the night, after the buses stoppebruce, amanda, maurad running, she still was forced to spend some nights sleeping in her storage unit.  However, she was determined to get out of her situation and signed up to work with a FACETS case manager, who worked with her to find a second job and spent countless hours working with her and advocating on her behalf.  Additionally, after finding out that she was still occasionally sleeping in her storage unit, FACETS worked out a schedule so that Sharon could call FACETS' staff on the nights when she worked late, often past midnight, and someone would pick her up and bring her to the Hypothermia shelter.

After working diligently with her case manager, within a few short weeks Sharon had found a great job in marketing and was saving money.  FACETS then worked with her to find an affordable apartment and, as a part of HOST, we were able to access some of the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing stimulus funds to help with her move in costs and short term rental support.  We are proud to announce that Sharon is no longer forced to sleep in her storage unit or participate in the Hypothermia program because she has been happily living in her new apartment for the past week!

Upcoming Events!

March Move-in Madness!
Weekends in March 2010

FACETS is VERY excited to announce that we will be moving nine homeless men and women into apartments in March, where they will join our Supportive Housing program.  Additionally, one of our other programs is being expanded to accommodate five
homeless families in apartments, as well!  This means that we need to furnish 12 apartments in March and we need YOUR help!  Unfortunately FDon and BarbaraACETS does not have storage to hold furniture until we need it in March, so we are looking for people/groups/organizations that are able to donate furnitureand/or store it until it is needed in March.  If you can help, please contact Tycie Young at 703-272-3710.

clients with his case manager.

There are many ways you can help during March Move-in Madness!
  • Gracing Spaces Groups - We are looking for groups to "Adopt" or Grace the Space of the 12 apartments.  The apartments will be 1,2 and 3 bedrooms, so we are looking for groups that can collect furniture and then help us move clients into their new homes in March.  If you are interested in getting involved in Gracing Spaces, please contact us for more information!
  • Donate furniture in March - we will need lots of furniture to accommodate 5 families and 9 individuals, so we are looking for anyone and everyone who has furniture in good condition that they can donate.  We are unable to store the furniture, however, so ideally we are looking for groups that can hold onto their donation until it is needed in March.
  • Volunteer Movers - Help FACETS move clients into their new homes in March.  This promises to be a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved, so please stay tuned for more information about how you can help!
