Dear FACETS Friends,

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  Thank you for all of your support for FACETS and for helping us meet the growing needs of the thousands of families and singles who are homeless in Fairfax County.

While many of us had fun playing in the winter wonderland this weekend, it was a dangerous period for many of our clients.  Luckily, however, the Hypothermia Prevention Response program kicked off the week of November 22nd and the men and women who might otherwise have spent Friday and Saturday night shivering in a tent in the woods were able to enjoy hot meals, the fellowship of friends, and were sheltered from the elements.  Thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers who make the cold winter months safer for our homeless friends.  Keep reading to see what a difference this program made in the life of one of the participants last year!

Don't forget to come to the Austin Grill in Springfield TONIGHT for the Fundraiser For FACETS!  Proceeds raised at the Austin Grill tonight will go towards our programs, so simply coming out with your family and having some dinner will make a real impact on FACETS' critical services for homeless singles and families. Steve Smith and the Meteors will be playing from 6pm-9pm, so in addition to enjoying yummy Tex-Mex food, you will be serenaded by a fantastic blues band!

Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed a fun-fillebruce, amanda, maurad evening at A Taste of Fall with FACETS!  We got to hear from clients served by FACETS' programs, bid on some amazing auction items, and enjoy tasty tidbits from local restaurants and caterers. It was a very successful event and we are so appreciative of your support!

FACETS was featured on News Channel 8 on Thanksgiving! Hear from FACETS' Executive Director, Amanda Andere, as she is interviewed by Bruce DePuyt!  The news clip is found here:

Hypothermia Success Story!

FACETS partners with the Fairfax County Government and local faith-based communities to provide the Hypothermia Prevention Response Program to homeless men and women in our community. The program runs throughout the winter and provides shelter, hot meals and companionship for people who might otherwise be at risk of hypothermia while living in tents or in their cars during the cold winter months. Last year, this program sheltered more than 300 individuals, including Joe, a veteran from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. Joe participated in the program last winter while also attending NOVA under the G.I. Bill. His goal was to attain an associate's degree and then become a certified electrician, so he spent much of his time in the program studying for his various classes. Working with FACETS' staff, Joe was urged to meet with a mental health worker, which helped him overcome some post-traumatic stress that he was suffering after coming back from the war. Today, Joe is living in a supportive housing unit and he credits having the Hypothermia Prevention Response Program with helping him get his degree. Without the program he would not have had a place to study and he would most likely still be living in the woods in Fairfax.

Thank you for supporting FACETS and for helping make dreams come true for people like Joe!

FACETS' Mentoring Program

  • We need male mentors!                                                            Currently, we have a shortage of mentormen who are available to mentor boys in our Education and Community Development programs.  Mentoring can make a real impact in the life of low-income, at-risk youth and is an incredibly rewarding experience.  If you are at least 18 years old, and would like to get involved in this wonderful program, please contact Carrie Idol-Richards
for more information about how you can get involved.

Advocacy Issues: Help End Homelessness!

Communities of Faith United for Housing has issued an Action Alert!
"The county has been holding community meetings where citizens are
encouraged to voice their concerns and priorities about the budget.  Many
of you attended these meetings and your input is captured in the report
presented by Susan Datta, Department of Management and Budget (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/government/budget/dmb-budget-presentation
-11-23-09.pdf) to the Board of Supervisors.  Thanks to your advocacy,
the  reduction in affordable housing funding is identified as one of the
least acceptable FY 2010 budget strategies and increasing the Real
Estate tax rate as one of the most acceptable. Please use the talking points developed for the Community Dialogues in preparing your comments and add your personal experiences with persons who are homeless or near homelessness - in hypothermia, with emergency services, with volunteering.  The services provided by the County for our poorest neighbors are critical to their survival.  These are not wants they are needs.

Although the Community Dialogues are finished, you still have an opportunity to raise your voice to protect the most vulnerable people in our community from cuts in affordable housing programs and initiatives that serve our low-income neighbors. The County web site for the FY 2011 Budget (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/government/budget) provides several options for providing input including:
· an Online feedback form
· calling the Budget hotline at 703-324-9400, and
· contacting your representative on the Board of Supervisors or the School Board."
