Dear FACETS Friends,

Each day, homeless families and individuals come to the FACETS office in search of food, emergency supplies, employment assistance, medical attention, and counseling, but...most of all...they come in search of hope.  Thanks to the support of people like you, FACETS' staff is able to provide that hope and meet the growing needs of thousands of people who are homeless each year.

As home foreclosures and job layoffs continue, FACETS would like to expand our presence within the community so that people in need know where they can go for help and people who are interested in getting involved in the movement to end homelessness can learn more about FACETS' services.  If you have a few minutes, please consider filling out FACETS' brief on-line survey to help us evaluate how we can more effectively reach out to our supporters and spread the word about homelessness to our neighbors.  The survey is operated through the secure site, SurveyMonkey, and we would really appreciate your help!

Please contact Tycie Young at 703-352-5090 or visit FACETS' website for up-to-date volunteer opportunities, pantry needs, and ways to contribute financially.  Thank you for your support!

All the best,

The FACETS family

FACETS Makes a Difference!

FACETS works with thousands of homeless individuals each year and helps them in their personal journeys towards self-sufficiency.  Recently, FACETS helped a couple who had been homeless for nearly two years find a home!

After Joe was laid off from work and was unable to locate new employment for several months, he and his wife, Linda, were forced into homelessness and began living in the woods in Fairfax City. During the winter months, they participated in FACETS' Hypothermia Prevention Program, but were determined to make the winter of 2008-2009 their final year in the program. Joe secured employment and, with help from FACETS and other supporting agencies, the couple located an affordable condominium apartment in a country club development in Leesburg.

FACETS found donors who provided financial assistance for their first month's rent and security deposit, as well as a donated vehicle that enabled Joe to commute to and from his new job in Reston.  Additionally, the couple was fortunate enough to receive a donation of furniture and house wares to facilitate their transition into their new apartment. Linda shared that their patio faces the ninth hole at the Raspberry Falls Golf Course were she and Joe can sit and watch the golfers play. They have a pool, which they have unlimited access to, and they look forward to getting a lot of use from it. Linda shared a funny story about how the management of the apartment complex asked them if they wanted to join the country club. Linda kindly declined but stated, "maybe next year." Linda also commented, "Wow, from the woods to a country club, how about that..."

We'd love the opportunity to come in and speak to you, your faith community, business, and/or civic group about new developments in FACETS' programs and services.  We always have new updates that we would love to share with our supporters - for example, recently, three more homeless men moved into a 3 bedroom apartment in our Supportive Housing program. Their apartment was beautifully decorated by a dedicated group of volunteers from Lord of Life Lutheran church who "graced their space" and the men are doing wonderfully in their new home.

To schedule a time for a member of FACETS staff to come and speak at one of your groups, please contact Tycie Young at 703-272-3710.

Helping hands

Each day FACETS strives to provide a growing number of impoverished men, women and children with emergency food and clothing so they can survive on a day to day basis.  Not surprisingly, in the past year we have seen huge increases in the number of people who are coming to us in need of help - the Hot Meals program alone has seen a 30% increase in the past 12 months.  We are always so grateful for the community's support in helping us and, now more than ever, supplies for people who are homeless or on the brink of homelessness are in great demand.

In particular, FACETS is seeing a need for basic camping supplies - such as can openers, flash lights, bug spray, tents, gray/brown tarps - that can be used by people who have lost their home and are living outdoors.

We would be delighted if you would consider including our pantry needs and additional information regarding FACETS in your business or faith community's bulletin or newsletter.  Please contact Tycie Young at 703-272-3710 to discuss receiving these and your deadlines.

School Supply Drive!
  school
Each summer, we work hard to collect school supplies for children and youth who are involved in our programs.  Last year we were able to distribute more than 300 backpacks, and we'll need your help to continue the trend this year!  If you have a group that would like to hold a supply drive, if you have supplies to donate, or if you would like to help out in August as we sort and distribute the school supplies at the "Backpack Stuffing parties," please let us know!

Please contact Carrie Idol for more informatio
n at cidol@FacetsCares.org or 703-352-5090.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

With thousands of people who are homeless in Fairfax, volunteering is a wonderful way to help FACETS provide critical services that can truly make a difference in the lives of our clients.  We have many opportunities available for individuals, groups and students so please consider volunteering in a way that fits your interests, skills, and availability.  Monthly drives for our pantry are an excellent way for businesses, civic groups, and Girl/Boy Scout Troops to provide an invaluable service for the hundreds of homeless individuals and families that come to our office each month.  To learn more about monthly supply drives, please call Carrie Idol at 703-352-5090.

There are a number of ways you can get involved, and these are some of our current needs.  If you're interested, or would like more information, please contact us at volunteer@facetscares.org or 703-352-5090.

Translators - FACETS needs volunteers who are able to translate Spanish, Arabic, Urdu, and/or Somali on both a one-time and on-going basis.  If you are able to speak any of these languages and are interested in occasional and/or ongoing opportunities to translate for FACETS' social workers, please contact us!

Drivers - FACETS is always looking for individuals who are able to help transport clients to meetings, job interviews, and appointments. Both on-call and scheduled drivers are needed.
