Now more than ever... "If you want others to be happy, practice
compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." - His Holiness, the
Dalai Lama
Dear FACETS Friends,
Poverty and the threat of homelessness are on
the rise because of a pandemic economic collapse. In the Fairfax-Falls Church
community, requests for help increased by 61% since January 2006, yet population grew by less
than 1% over that time. The largest increase in demand includes
emergency food (125%increase), emergency housing payment assistance (81% increase) and subsidized housing
(88%increase).
In the past 12 months, FACETS has experienced a 64% increase in the
number of individuals who are homeless and in search of assistance from
programs like our Hot Meals program, which serves nightly meals and Sunday morning breakfast to
people who are homeless and living on the streets.
We continue to work hard to meet these
needs. Drop-in clients are being served
with respect and compassion. Soon, FACETS
will place another 10 single men and women in permanent housing. More kids than ever will be enjoying summer
camp experiences. And, planning has
begun with our faith partners for next winter's hypothermia sheltering effort.
But are staff and our resources are stretched
thin. Now more than ever, FACETS needs
donations of your time, talent and treasure.
Please contact Tycie Young at 703-352-5090
or visit FACETS'
website for up-to-date volunteer opportunities, pantry needs, and ways to
contribute financially. Thank you for your support!

Program Spotlight: Education and Community Development Summer Kick-Off Parties!

Last week, FACETS held its annual Summer Kick-Off Parties at each of the three public housing communities we serve. The parties were enormously successful, with numerous families coming out to enjoy the fantastic BBQ and fun games, as well as the amazing face painter, Angela McCall, and Jake the Magician! Many thanks to the wonderful Angela McCall and Jake the Magician who both donated their impressive services. As always, many thanks to all of the volunteers and donors who make the Ed ucation and Community Development programs at the properties possible. Thanks to them, each year hundreds of kids receive backpacks filled with school supplies, have the opportunity to attend summer camp, and can participate in numerous programs throughout the year, such as Homework Help, Tutoring, Passport to Fun Reading Club, Girls Group, and Boys Group. Thank you! Interested in getting involved? Please consider assisting with this year's School Supply Drive! FACETS is in the process of collecting backpacks and school supplies for children living at the properties, as well as the many homeless children who live in Fairfax County. We will be collecting items throughout July and are planning to have "Backpack Stuffing parties" at each property and a community party for additional children who are in need, so that children can fill their own backpack with needed school supplies. Please contact Carrie Idol for more information!

VOLUNTEER NEEDS
School Supply Drive!
Each summer, we work hard to
collect school supplies for children and youth who are involved in our
programs. Last year we were able to distribute more than 300 backpacks,
and we'll need your help to continue the trend this year! If you have a
group that would like to hold a supply drive, if you have supplies to donate,
or if you would like to help out in August as we sort and distribute the school
supplies at the "Backpack Stuffing parties," please let us know! Please contact Carrie
Idol for more information at cidol@FacetsCares.org or 703-352-5090.
Current
Volunteer Opportunities
With
thousands of people who are homeless in Fairfax,
volunteering is a wonderful way to help FACETS provide critical services that
can truly make a difference in the lives of our clients. We have many opportunities available for
individuals, groups and students so please consider volunteering in a way that
fits your interests, skills, and availability. Monthly drives for our pantry are an
excellent way for businesses, civic groups, and Girl/Boy Scout Troops to
provide an invaluable service for the hundreds of homeless individuals and
families that come to our office each month.
To learn more about monthly supply drives, please call Carrie Idol at 703-352-5090.
There are a number of ways you can get involved, and these
are some of our current needs. If you're interested, or would like more
information, please contact us at volunteer@facetscares.org
or 703-352-5090.
Friendly Visitor(s) for Supportive Housing client - One of FACETS' Supportive Housing clients needs a friend! Ideally, we would like to enlist a crew of people who are able to visit him regularly (weekly/monthly) to just be a friendly face and help him clean his apartment. For more information, please contact Carrie Idol.
Translators
- FACETS needs volunteers who are able to translate Spanish,
Arabic, Urdu, and/or Somali on both a one-time and on-going basis. If you are able to speak any of these
languages and are interested in occasional and/or ongoing opportunities to
translate for FACETS' social workers, please contact us!
Drivers
- FACETS is always looking for individuals who are able to help
transport clients to meetings, job interviews, and appointments. Both
on-call and scheduled drivers are needed.
Special Request - A former FACETS client who recently secured housing is pregnant and in need of a rocking chair and a "snugli." If you are able to donate either, please contact Tycie Young.
