Dear FACETS friends,
Welcome to the May
issue of The Open Door.
FACETS held its 7th
annual Connections of the Heart Breakfast on May 5, 2009 at the Waterford in Fair Oaks. The event was an incredible success,
boasting nearly 500 attendees, including many state and county officials. FACETS was honored to have Congressman
Gerry Connolly, Ch airman Sharon Bulova, and more than 20 state delegates and county
officials! Thank you to everyone who attended and gave so generously!
If you missed the Breakfast, or would like to relive some of the exciting highlights, please check FACETS' website on Tuesday, June 2nd, where you can find a link to a short video featuring the four client speakers, as well as our Executive Director, Amanda Andere, as she talks about the vision for FACETS' future.

WE COULDN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOU...
"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it for someone else." - Benjamin Franklin
We extend our deepest appreciation to all of you who make FACETS' work possible. Through your donations of time, resources, and services FACETS is able to help families and individuals who are homeless in Fairfax and struggling just to survive.
As many of you know, during the past six months,
as foreclosures and layoffs continue to rise, FACETS has seen a sharp increase
in the number of people coming to our office in search of help. For
many of FACETS clients, it is the very newness of the experience that is the
most terrifying and overwhelming. Now, more than ever, FACETS needs the support of the
community - your support and your
neighbor's support - to raise awareness about FACETS' programs, about
homelessness, and about the need for support. In just the past month,
programs like the Hot Meals program have seen an 18% jump in the number of
people who are in need and it is vital that we as a community work together to
help the families and individuals who are left with no other choice but to
sleep in the woods at night. There are
many ways for you to get involved, so please contact Tycie Young at 703-352-5090 or visit FACETS' website for up-to-date
volunteer opportunities, pantry needs, and ways to contribute financially. Thank you for your support!

VOLUNTEER NEEDS
School Supply Drive!
Each summer, we work hard to
collect school supplies for children and youth who are involved in our
programs. Last year we were able to distribute more than 300 backpacks,
and we'll need your help to continue the trend this year! If you have a
group that would like to hold a supply drive, if you have supplies to donate,
or if you would like to help out in August as we sort and distribute the school
supplies, please let us know! Please contact Carrie
Idol for more information at cidol@FacetsCares.org or 703-352-5090.
Current
Volunteer Opportunities
With
thousands of people who are homeless in Fairfax,
volunteering is a wonderful way to help FACETS provide critical services that
can truly make a difference in the lives of our clients. We have many opportunities available for
individuals, groups and students so please consider volunteering in a way that
fits your interests, skills, and availability. Monthly drives for our pantry are an
excellent way for businesses, civic groups, and Girl/Boy Scout Troops to
provide an invaluable service for the hundreds of homeless individuals and
families that come to our office each month.
To learn more about monthly supply drives, please call Carrie Idol at 703-352-5090.
There are a number of ways you can get involved, and these
are some of our current needs. If you're interested, or would like more
information, please contact us at volunteer@facetscares.org
or 703-352-5090.
Youth
Summer Programs - Volunteers are needed to work with children of
all ages through our Summer Enrichment programs. Programs run weekday
afternoons/evenings.
Translators
- FACETS needs volunteers who are able to translate Spanish,
Arabic, Urdu, and/or Somali on both a one-time and on-going basis. If you are able to speak any of these
languages and are interested in occasional and/or ongoing opportunities to
translate for FACETS' social workers, please contact us!
Drivers
- FACETS is always looking for individuals who are able to help
transport clients to meetings, job interviews, and appointments. Both
on-call and scheduled drivers are needed.
FACETS still has a couple of internship opportunities. Please email Carrie Idol at cidol@FacetsCares.org if you are interested! Available positions:
- Resource Development Intern - Administrative Intern

A LETTER FROM A FACETS CLIENT
"I want to thank you for all of your help from the bottom of
my heart. I get the keys to my apartment
tomorrow and I also have my oldest daughter with me for good now. Everything will be in order by June, so I know
I will be able to get my son as well. He
is almost three months old now, getting real big and alert! If it was not for you I don't know where I would
be right now. I go back to school in
September to finish up my degree, so by the end of this year I will be proud to
say that I have a career. I really want
to let you know that your help has changed my life, and allowed me to reunify
with my children. I will be taking up
social work myself in the near future. Your
work has truly made a difference in my life.
Thank you. Until next time,
blessings to all of you." - A FACETS client
