Dear FACETS friends,

Welcome to the April issue of The Open Door.  As more and more people face home foreclosures and job layoffs, FACETS has seen a 25% increase in the number of homeless individuals who are coming to the organization for assistance and we are determined to meet the needs of this growing population. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we continue to provide critical services and programs for people in need.

We are excited to announce that in recognition of our strong programs and commitment to the community, FACETS was recently accepted into the Community 1st - America's Charities workplace giving campaign for 2009 - 2010!  If they are not already members, please encourage your employer to join America's Charities, so you can select FACETS during the workplace giving campaign.  For more information, please click here or call/email Tycie Young at 703-272-3710.

FACETS' upcoming Connections of the Heart Breakfast will be held on May 5th, 7:30 am - 8:30 am, at the Waterford in Fair Oaks and we hope to see all of you there!  The Breakfast is a wonderful event and is a great opportunity for you to meet FACETS' new Executive Director, Amanda Andere.  For more information about the Breakfast, please scroll down to the Upcoming Events section.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

FACETS' Motel Program

ClaudiaWith approximately 2,000 homeless men, women, and children in Fairfax, the wait to get into a homeless shelter can often be 4-5 months.  During the interim, homeless families are referred to FACETS by Fairfax County so they can receive supportive services to help them during this difficult period.

FACETS' social workers help families regain self-sufficiency by offering counseling and support in the areas of job readiness training, budget classes, language instruction, mental health
counseling, medical services and, when needed, substance abuse treatment.  Additionally, families in the Motel Program receive any needed clothing and household items, as well as daily meals through the Hot Meals program, which provides nutritious hot dinners and Sunday morning breakfast 365 days a year through the strong partnerships between FACETS and local faith communities.

Yesterday, one of FACETS' Motel clients mo
ved out of the motel room she and her daughter had been living in since February and into a Transitional Supportive Housing program.  Having fled an abusive household in which they had been renting a basement apartment, Samantha* and her daughter met with one of FACETS' social workers for several months and received the support they needed to get back on their feet. "FACETS has helped me in so many ways...food, daycare for my daughter, budgeting classes...but most of all, they helped me find housing.  Because of FACETS, my daughter and I now have a stable place to live!"

The ultimate goal of the Motel Program is to help families find stable housing and support them in their transition to self-sufficiency.  This recent success story is just one of many, but we are so proud of Samantha for all of her hard work and very happy that she and her daughter will now have stable housing!
