Dear FACETS Supporter,

Welcome to the January issue of The Open Door.  I hope everyone is enjoying the New Year and staying warm and safe in this snowy weather!

Thank you to everyone who donated to FACETS last year.  The generous support we received from you was overwhelming and we are so appreciative of everything you do to help us open doors for the men, women, and children who are homeless in Fairfax County.  Since September, we have seen a 25% increase in the number of people coming to FACETS in need of help, and your assistance has been invaluable in helping us meet this increasing need.

This time of year is especially dangerous for our homeless neighbors, which is why FACETS initiated the Hypothermia Prevention Response program (HPRP) five years ago in an effort to ensure that everyone has a safe place to sleep at night and a warm, nutritious meal.  This year, the program began in November and, through strong partnerships with local faith communities and the Fairfax County government, the program has been sheltering and feeding 40-60 people each night.  HPRP will continue through March 15, with faith communities opening their doors and providing a safe place for homeless individuals to sleep at night, as well as delicious hot meals, breakfast, and bagged lunches.  We are still looking for volunteers to help cook meals and to generally help out, so if you think you can assist this vitally important program please contact Barbara Tate at btate@FacetsCares.org.

Thank you for all of your past support!  We hope you will continue helping FACETS move people out of homelessness and into homes.

Best wishes,

Tycie Young

McGilvrays

FACETS would like to extend a hearty THANK YOU to the Target at Fair Lakes and Barbara and James McGilvray for one of the largest in-kind donations FACETS has received in years!  The McGilvrays made the connection with Target and organized all of the logistics for picking up more than $1,000 worth of supplies for the FACETS pantry in January.  Even better, this was not a one-time donation and Target is going to continue making similar donations to FACETS in the future.  The donation will affect the lives of hundreds of FACETS' clients by providing them with food, hygiene items, baby diapers and much much more!

Thank you for your generous support!

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in helping out?  FACETS has a number of ways you can get involved, and these are some of our current needs.

FACETS is currently looking for support volunteers to help in Outreach and Education's  programs, including:

--  Volunteers to help adults in ESL, Computer class, Womens Group, and Parenting class.
--  Volunteers to help children in the following programs: Homework Help, Relate, Positive Action, Boys Group, and Girl Power.

Generally, the time commitment to volunteer in one of these programs is 1-2 hours each week.

We especially need volunteers for Homework Help, so if you think you could volunteer 1 hour each week to assist youth with daily homework assignments, test preparation, and projects, please click here!

FACETS is also looking for a Front Desk volunteer to work in the FACETS office on Monday afternoons from 3 pm - 5pm, answering phones and greeting people as they arrive at the FACETS office.

If you can help, please click here.

Help save a life this winter and volunteer in the Hypothermia Prevention Response Program!  Faith communities are graciously opening their doors this winter to men and women who are homeless, but we still need some additional volunteers to cook/serve meals and to help during various shifts at night.  Volunteers are especially needed from 4:30 pm - 7:30 am during these weeks: February 1st -7th and March 1st -7th.
If you are able to help, please contact Barbara Tate, FACETS' Hypothermia Prevention Program Coordinator.

FACETS is looking for a Licensed Clinical MSW to provide 1-2 hours/week of supervision to social workers in need of hours for their license, as well as to assist with case staffing.  Please click here to get more information.
