Give the Gift of Hope this Season!

holiday

This season, please consider giving a FACETS Gift of Hope to your friends and family members. An alternative to traditional gift giving is a perfect way to share the season's spirit and a gift in the name of a friend or family member to support FACETS' programs for the homeless can save lives!

If you would like a free set of cards (pictured above) to send in time for the holidays, please contact Tycie Young (703-272-3710).  You may download and print a donation form here or donate on-line here. Thank you!

Dear FACETS Supporter,

Welcome to the December issue of The Open Door.  I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season!  Please remember FACETS if you are considering a charitable year-end contribution this year.  There are many ways to give to FACETS and we appreciate all of your support!

FACETS has seen a 20% increase in the number of individuals who are hungry and in need of our Hot Meals program in the past few months, compared to this time last year.  The Hot Meals program served more than 35,000 meals last year and we are on track to serve even more this year. Now more than ever, FACETS needs your support to meet the growing number of people who are homeless in Fairfax.

Individuals and families that are homeless face unthinkable adversities during the best economic times, when public services are more readily available and charitable giving is at its height.  During the current economic climate, though, as we all feel the strain and attempt to tighten our purse strings, people who are homeless are left, quite literally, standing alone in the cold.  FACETS' mission is to reach out to these people, many of whom have just recently lost their job and home, and to give them food, clothing, blankets, shelter and many other critical services.  We could not do this without our supporters...without you.  Thank you for all of your past support and please, in this season of giving, consider making a donation to FACETS and help move someone from homelessness back into a home.

Volunteer Spotlight

During the past few weeks, Jonathan Springfield, a freshman at South Lakes High School, has not only shown the true spirit of the season, but also amazing initiative and generosity.  Through his efforts, 604 winter coats have been collected to help keep men, women, and children who are homeless warm throughout the winter months.

In Johanthan's words:

"I'm 15 years old and a freshman at South Lakes High School in Reston. I am a Life Scout in Troop 51 [and] I'm collecting coats for FACETS for my Boy Scout Eagle Project.  Part of the Boy Scout Promise is to 'help other people at all times,' so I wanted a project that would really help people. I divided my Eagle Project into 2 Phases. In Phase I, I put out donation boxes during the month of November at the Fox Mill Giant, the Reston YMCA, and Community of Faith Methodist Church.  I also handed out fliers at various Girl Scout and Cub Scout meetings and at my piano teacher's studio.  People were very generous and I received 209 coats.  In Phase II, I printed out routes through various neighborhoods and Boy Scouts from my troop went out and put fliers describing the coat drive on doors.  We handed out over 1,300 fliers [and on] Dec. 14, we met again and the boys went around the neighborhoods and collected donations that people put out in bags on their front stoops."
Jonathan collected an additional 395 coats through Phase II.
"My original goal was to collect 200 coats with at least 10% (20 coats) being mens' coats size L or XL because I was told that was where the biggest need was.  Thanks to the generosity of the people in the Reston/Herndon community, I have exceeded my goal. Hopefully, I will be able to help a lot of people this winter."

FACETS would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Jonathan and all of the people who helped make his coat drive for FACETS so successful!!

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in helping out?  FACETS has a number of ways you can get involved, and these are some of our current needs.

FACETS is currently looking for volunteers to help in Outreach and Education's programs, including:

--  Volunteers to help adults in ESOL, Literacy, Womens Group, and GED classes.
--  Volunteers to help children in the Homework Hotspots program, as well as the Boys Group, and Girl Power programs.
If you can help, please click here.

Help save a life this winter and volunteer in the Hypothermia Prevention Response Program!  Faith communities are graciously opening their doors this winter to men and women who are homeless, but we still need some additional volunteers to help cook/serve meals and to help during various shifts at night.  Volunteers are especially needed during these weeks: December 28th - January 3rd, January 4th - 10th, January 18th - 24th, February 15th - 21st, and March 1st -7th.
If you are able to help, please contact Barbara Tate, FACETS' Hypothermia Prevention Program Coordinator.

Additionally, drivers are needed to help take FACETS' clients to medical appointments and to be on-call for other needs.  Click here for more information.

Front Desk Volunteers are Needed!
Volunteers play a critical role at FACETS and we are currently looking for individuals who are able to commit to volunteering in the afternoons every Wednesday and/or Friday  to answer phones and greet people as they come into the FACETS office.  If you are able to help, please email volunteer@FacetsCares.org for more information.
