The Economy and Homelessness

Recent economic conditions have had a very real impact on homelessness.  Cities across the country are reporting increasing numbers of people who are homeless, especially amongst families.

More and more people are coming to FACETS for our programs and services and we need your help to meet this growing need.

FACETS' clients are being critically affected by:

* A tighter job market, which is making it more and more difficult for them to find jobs that pay a living-wage

* Home foreclosures are causing an increase in the number of homeless families

* High rental prices for apartments continue to make it difficult to find affordable housing, while the demand increases

* Longer waits to get into homeless shelters

Dear FACETS Supporter,

Welcome to the November issue of The Open Door.  Thank you to everyone who came to FACETS' 9th Annual Fall for FACETS Auction and to the Help the Homeless Walkathon!  Both events were successful and we are so appreciative of your support.  Thank you!

The last few months have been difficult for many of us, causing increasing concern as we watch our retirement savings and stock portfolios plummet. But for FACETS' clients, who can only dream of retirement savings, it can seem like a luxury to have these types of concerns.   Instead, the souring economy, the rising energy costs, escalating unemployment and shortage of affordable housing are threatening their ability to merely survive.

FACETS is facing a growing number of people who are homeless, many of them are families with young children who, until recently, had been living within one or two paychecks from disaster, unable to save anything because all of their earnings went to daily living expenses.  With the economic downturn and the corresponding home foreclosures and tight job market, it is no surprise that more and more people are coming to FACETS for help.

Now, more than ever, FACETS needs your help to break the cycle of homelessness in Fairfax.  Please consider making a donation today to help move someone from homelessness back into a home.

"My name is Meghan and this time last year I was very pregnant and homeless with my boyfriend in FACETS' Hypothermia Prevention Response program.  The last two years have been very hard, especially because our three little boys were put in Foster Care in 2007 because we weren't stable enough to provide for them.  When we came to the Hypothermia shelter last year we were told that if we didn't have a home by the time our daughter was born that the County would place her in foster care, too.  My boyfriend, Jory, worked 6 days a week, 12 hours a day and I waddled around pregnant for most of the winter. Being in the Hypothermia shelter gave us a place to sleep at night, hot meals, and people to talk to and just vent about the general frustrations we were facing. When we told FACETS that we could possibly lose our daughter, their staff began to advocate for us and because of their efforts, we were able to get into an apartment the day the Hypothermia program ended. Since then, I have gotten a job and we just moved into a two bedroom townhouse in Falls Church in the hopes of getting our boys back.   We have our final appeal hearing to get them back on Wednesday the 26th, and would really appreciate the thoughts and prayers of FACETS' supporters during this difficult time.  Without the help from FACETS we would not have the chance to put our family back together, and we would not have been able to get ourselves into a stable situation. We are so grateful that this organization exists, without it we would have been lost.
Much Thanks, Meghan, Jory and Baby Emma"

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in helping out?  FACETS has a number of ways you can get involved, and these are some of our current needs.

Holiday Drive Donations - The winter weather has definitely arrived  and FACETS is collecting donations for our annual Holiday Drive, in which baskets of food are collected for families and individuals who would otherwise go hungry during the holiday season.  If you are able to donate, please email Amy Green for more information.

Front Desk Volunteers are Needed!
Volunteers play a critical role at FACETS and we are currently looking for individuals who are able to commit to volunteering in the afternoons every Wednesday through January 1st or every Friday (on-going) to answer phones and greet people as they come into the FACETS office.  If you are able to help, please email volunteer@FacetsCares.org for more information.

 FACETS Pantry

The weather is getting colder and FACETS is in desperate need of blankets, sleeping bags, and men's coats for our clients.
When donating sleeping bags, please make sure they can weather temperatures below 0 degrees farenheight.
Thank you!

Please contact Amy Green for more information about how to donate.
