Dear FACETS Supporter,
Welcome to The Open Door! This issue highlights upcoming events,
volunteer opportunities, and a volunteer spotlight.
Thank you to everyone who attended FACETS' 20th Anniversary celebration on July 19th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where we were pleased to present Linda D. Wimpey, FACETS' founder, with the first annual FACETS Spirit Award. Many thanks to the outstanding performers who truly made the event a joyous occasion and to Shirley's Catering & Gourmet Gift Baskets for providing a delicious reception.
Thank you for your support.

Current Volunteer Opportunities
Interested in helping out? FACETS has a number of ways you can get involved, and these are some of
our current needs. Volunteer - It's hard to believe that the school year is just around the corner, and
with that comes the start of FACETS' Fall Educational and Enrichment
Programs (Homework Help, Computer Lab, Exploring the Arts, etc)! If you would like to volunteer, please email us at volunteer@FacetsCares.org.
Tutor - Would you like to make a real difference in the life of a child? Consider becoming a tutor! Please email volunteer@FacetsCares.org for information about how you can help.
Motel Welcome Kits - Each month, families who are homeless and unable to find refuge in one of the local homeless shelters move into FACETS' motel program, which provides them with shelter, food, and counseling services until they are able to move into a homeless shelter or find other housing options. We are in great need of Welcome Kits, which are given to new families when they move into the motels. The kits provide basic necessities and help the families feel at home.
If you are able to put together a Motel Welcome Kit, please include the following:
Weekly Planner; Can Opener; Paper plates and bowls; Cups; Ziplock bags; Flashlight (with batteries); Bottled water; Pots and pans; Laundry detergent; Utensils; Disposable plastic containers; Dish soap; and Disinfectant wipes

Volunteer Spotlight!
FACETS would like to extend a hearty thank you to Peter Mburu, who has been a volunteer at FACETS for the past four years! He has provided invaluable support to children in the Homework Hotspot program at Robinson Square, and FACETS is so grateful for his hard work and enthusiasm.
In his words:
"I assist kids in completing their daily homework at the
Homework Hotspot and tutor students ranging from kindergarten to high school
levels. Keeping the attention span of ten students ranging in age from 5 to 17
can be challenging, but using incentives like computer time and academic games
can help to motivate the students to not only finish their homework, but also
further their experience in diverse ways.
Patience is something that I learn from each endeavor in my
life, but I did not realize to what extent FACETS would help me develop the
virtue of patience. Putting myself in their shoes and remembering how difficult
it was to motivate myself when I was their age helps me during those occasions
when my patience runs out.
Coming up with new ways of motivating the students has been
a challenge, but it is rewarding when it works. The students are happy because
they are being rewarded and I am pleased because they have finished their work.
I keep volunteering with FACETS because I know that spending
that one hour with the kids is helping. If they were not in FACETS, where would
they be? And if FACETS did not have volunteers, who would help them?
The supporters of FACETS are doing an amazing thing. I get
to see the results, the smiles, and the bonds that are built as a result of
their contributions. I hope that they realize the reach of their support."
Thank you Peter!
