Dear FACETS Supporter,
Welcome to The Open Door! This issue highlights upcoming events,
volunteer opportunities, and a recent FACETS success story.
As many of you know, FACETS is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year and we are having a special celebration on July 19th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (3022 Woodlawn Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22042) from 3pm - 5pm! In addition to featuring delicious food and amazing music from soloists, choirs, and handbell groups, FACETS will be awarding the first annual Spirit Award, which
recognizes and honors an individual or a group that
demonstrates vision, philanthropy, and service, while also promoting FACETS' vision of
being the trusted, primary catalyst for bringing together those who have a need
with those who can help meet the need to break the cycle of homelessness and
poverty in Fairfax, Virginia.
It is with great honor that the FACETS Board of Directors
and staff announce that FACETS' founder, Linda D. Wimpey, is the first
recipient of the FACETS Spirit Award.
This award is proudly given to Linda for her visionary leadership,
outstanding service, personal commitment, and philanthropy to FACETS for the
past twenty years. What began as a
simple gesture of humanity led to an organization that is respected and a
leader in the movement to end homelessness in Fairfax County.
We hope everyone can make it to this exciting event! Please RSVP to Margaret Thaxton (mthaxton@FacetsCares.org or 703-352-6342) by July 8th.
Thank you for all of your generosity. You are helping FACETS Open Doors for thousands of individuals each year and we are so appreciative of your support!
Many thanks,
Tycie Young Director of Individual Giving and Communications 703-272-3710 tyoung@FacetsCares.org

Current Volunteer Opportunities
Interested in helping out? FACETS has a number of ways you can get involved, and these are some of
our current needs. If you're interested,
or would like more information, please contact us at volunteer@facetscares.org or
703-352-5090.
GED and ESL Tutors - FACETS is starting two new adult GED and ESL programs and volunteers are needed to tutor adults in both classes.
Front Desk - Volunteers are needed to staff
the office front desk from 8:30 am to 12 noon Friday mornings. Duties would include receptionist coverage,
client reception and other administrative tasks depending on the volunteer's interests
and skills. Motel Welcome Kits - Each month, families who are homeless and unable to find refuge in one of the local homeless shelters move into FACETS' motel program, which provides them with shelter, food, and counseling services until they are able to move into a homeless shelter or find other housing options. We are in great need of Welcome Kits, which are given to new families when they move into the motels. The kits provide basic necessities and help the families feel at home.
If you are able to put together a Motel Welcome Kit, please include the following: Weekly Planner; Can Opener; Paper plates and bowls; Cups; Ziplock bags; Flashlight (with batteries); Bottled water; Pots and pans; Laundry detergent; Utensils; Disposable plastic containers; Dish soap; and Disinfectant wipes

School Supply
Drive!
We are still collecting school supplies for children and youth who are involved in our programs! If you have a group that would
like to hold a supply drive, if you have supplies to donate, or if you would
like to help out in August as we sort and distribute the school supplies, please
let us know! Please email Amy Green,
Director of Community Resources, or call 703-352-3268
for more information.
Join the Ambassador Corps!
Are
you interested in meeting other FACETS supporters while also helping to end
homelessness in Fairfax? FACETS has thousands of supporters
and, in an effort to keep everyone involved in FACETS' mission, we have started
an Ambassador Corps. This group of committed FACETS supporters meets regularly throughout the year for dinner so we can reconnect with each
other and learn more about the latest news at FACETS. Throughout the year,
Ambassadors contact other individuals in the community who are involved in some
manner with FACETS, updating them with the latest information about our
programs, events, volunteer opportunities, and current donation needs. If they're comfortable asking for monetary donations on behalf of FACETS, Ambassadors are also asked to contact FACETS supporters about becoming Life Changers and making a pledge to support FACETS in the future.
FACETS is blessed to have a huge
network of supporters and we want to ensure that everyone feels like they are
part of the FACETS community, so if you think you would be interested in joining
this valuable group of people, or if you would like more information, please
email Tycie Young or call 703-272-3710.

A FACETS Success Story!
FACETS recently received a call from a former client who wanted
to share the many successes she has had over the past year. She first came to FACETS through the
Hypothermia Prevention Response Program, arriving on a cold winter night in
December 2006. She was quickly
referred to a FACETS social worker by one of the Hypothermia night-shift staff
members. The client was in a very
abusive relationship and desperately needed to escape to an area where her boyfriend
could not find her. Because of the
dangerous circumstances, FACETS contacted one of her adult children who lived
in another state to see if she could temporarily move in with him. FACETS then provided her with financial
support and helped her move out of the state and into a much safer environment.
One year later, the client reports that she has finished the
Virginia re-certification process for her technical degree and so will now be able to get
certified in her new state. Last month she moved into her own apartment and, as soon as she is certified, will be starting a new job. She is
well on her way to stability and we are so pleased that FACETS was
able to assist her during a time when she was especially vulnerable. Thank you for supporting FACETS and for
helping us reach out to people in need!
