A new way to volunteer
|
President Obama has been echoing the United Way message, calling out for people to come together, get involved and improve lives in their community. Well here's a new opportunity for you to do just that. UWCM can now connect you online to volunteer opportunities suited to your interests, no matter how tight your schedule. Through our Volunteer Center Calendar Project, UWCM can now help you find many "done-in-a-day" projects. Sign-up with a friend, co-worker or on your own; you'll be connected to a team of people like yourself for a fun, feel-good volunteering event.
Get involved! Visit www.handsonmass.org, register and find your way to make a difference.
Volunteers and non-profit agencies can contact Rita Crimmin to schedule training or learn more about this new program.

| One volunteer, one child, one hour...
It was Martin Luther King Day, a "Day of Service" and a cacophony of children's voices greeted the six Calendar Program volunteers as they entered the family homeless shelter. Those voices came from the playroom where six children awaited a story hour and help with a craft project. Most of the children were content to have a book read to them but one child wanted to write a book! While the volunteers read books to the other children, one volunteer sat on the floor and began quietly to ask the child about her interests and her dreams. For the next hour, working with construction paper, colored markers, glitter and glue, the child wrote and illustrated a book about a beautiful princess. The special pages of the book were bound together with colored ribbon and the child proudly showed her book to her mother and the other mothers that were gathered in the adjoining living room.
...making an impact on the lives of our community's children.
