Stepping Up for Girls

Greetings!
The Woman's Initiative of United Way of Central Massachusetts is pleased to offer three free, educational events this fall that will highlight the work of individuals and groups in assuring adolescent girls have the tools to succeed. We hope you will join us and invite your daughters, friends and colleagues to attend.

Erin Gruwell, author and teacher
Erin Gruwell
Erin Gruwell will be in Worcester on November 6, 2008 at Tuckerman Hall. The Harold Cotton Center for Leadership Excellence is the presenter in conjunction with the Woman's Initiative, the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts and the Hiatt Center for Urban Education.

Erin, who is most known for her involvement in the book, The Freedom Writers Diary, will talk about how she transformed her students' lives, by encouraging them to rethink rigid beliefs about themselves and others, to reconsider daily decisions, and to rechart their futures. With Erin's steadfast support, her students shattered stereotypes to become critical thinkers, aspiring college students, and citizens for change.  Learn more
Investing in Girls
Investing in Girls
The Women's Initiative invites you to learn about the exciting Investing In Girls Alliance, a dynamic partnership of more than 30 providers, educators, legislators and individuals committed to the health and vitality of adolescent girls in our community. Join us for a free educational event on December 8, 2008. Learn more

Get Out The Vote
As we embark on this historical election, take a retrospective view of women's right to vote. Join us on October 22 to view the movie Iron Jawed Angels, inspired by this pivotal chapter in American history. Hilary Swank plays Alice Paul, an American feminist who risked her life to fight for women's citizenship and the right to vote. Co-sponsored by: YWCA Central Massachusetts; Worcester Public Library; League of Women Voters; Worcester Women's History Project; Women's Initiative of United Way of Central Massachusetts.
