Resolution #1: Keep In Touch With Family And Friends In 2009

SkypeDid you know that technology makes it possible for you to talk to anyone, anywhere in the world for FREE with your computer? I use a service called Skype all the time for business (since I have colleagues all over the world), but it's also a great way for friends and family to keep in touch.

In fact, this year for Christmas we got both sets of parents headsets and web cameras for their computers. Getting set up is very simple and once you are a registered user, you can either "text" chat with other Skype users or use your computer's microphone and speakers (or a headset) to actually talk and video conference (assuming you have a web camera too) with other Skype users. Best of all, this is available for free.

Granted, you probably should use high-speed Internet if you want to use the voice and video features, but the text chat even works over a dial-up connection. What better way to stay connected with friends and family in 2009 - especially those that live in another state or across country. My parents head to Florida for the winter and the in-laws are about three hours away. With Skype, it's like they are sitting right here and we can see each other while we talk. It's great! Who will you connect with in 2009?

As you know, I've also talked a lot about "social networking" services like Blogger, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to keep connected. I'm excited to introduce you to Skype since it's is a great tool too. Besides, it's fun to see people while you're talking to them. So, give it a try and make 2009 the year you re-connect.

When you get connected, feel free to add me to your list. My Skype ID is "eggott" or just search for Eric Cook in Battle Creek and let me know what you think.
Resolution #2: Automatically Backup Your Computer And Keep Your Information Safe

Ever had a computer crash and end up saying "goodbye" to important documents, family pictures or sensitive data? Don't worry, it's happened to the best of us (including me). But, the folks at Carbonite have figured out a way to reduce the odds with their automated online backup service for your PC (sorry Mac users, still in "beta").

Carbonite Online Backup

For only $49.95 you get automated protection on your computer for a full year, regardless of how much data you have. That's right, there is no restriction on the amount of data that can be backed up. That means all your pictures, family videos, podcasts and other files can be safe and sound for about $4 per month! That's pretty cheap insurance, don't you think?

The process is simple. Whenever your computer is connected to the Internet, Carbonite silently works in the background checking which files have changes and backs up your data automatically. No more having to remember to back up manually, using CD/DVDs or even an external drive. And, if something happens to your computer, you can connect to the Internet from another computer (or your new one) and easily grab your data and restore it - something I've done a few times and it works great.

So, don't let 2009 be the year of the computer crash (and your data disappears). Protect your valuable information automatically and give Carbonite a try. I personally use this service to keep my information safe, so what are you waiting for?

Resolution #3: Work Smarter, Not Harder With GoToMeeting or GoToWebinar

If you are part of an organization with multiple locations or you offer a product or service that can be easily demonstrated on the computer, I've got some great news for you!

ToToMeeting CorporateThanks to the "buying power" of the world's largest Internet Marketing Company (WSI), we've partnered with GoToMeeting Corporate to provide you with special discounts on GoToMeeting or GoToWebinar online presentation solutions.

With these services you can host a meeting from your own computer and the system provides the phone number for participants to dial-in and they connect from their own computer, right over the Internet, and can see your screen for the presentation. Just think of the possibilities for training, sales and other communication in 2009. You can even record your presentation for playback later. Now that's working smarter!

Give me a call at (269) 841-5007 to learn more or visit my website and read the press release and then download our special pricing guide to get started. You can save hundreds on the GoToWebinar system and host up to 1,000 people online at the same time. Don't need anything that big, GoToMeeting can accommodate up to 15 participants and still offers many of the same great features.

Free Webinar: Blogging for Bankers

What's a blog? According to Wikipedia, the term "blog" (a contraction of the term "web log") is a website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

But, did you know that many businesses are starting to use blogging as a part of their Internet strategy to get "more personal" and build relationships with their customers and site visitors? Could your business be ready to take the next step in website interactivity? If so, please join us for this free webinar on Friday, January 23rd at 12:00 noon, EST.
