Wishing You and Yours a Happy and SAFE Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is recognized as a time to be thankful for what one has, but may take for granted. Unfortunately, what some people take for granted on this particular day is safety.
Here is a list of the most common hazards families face on Thanksgiving, and how to avoid catastrophe:
Fire The U.S. Fire Administration reports that more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day. That is more than double the number of home cooking fires that happen on an average day. In addition to installing a smoke alarm in the kitchen, there are several easy ways to avoid fires:
- Don't leave the kitchen while frying and grilling.
- Keep potholders and food wrappers at least 3 feet away from heat sources while cooking.
- Use a timer to do kitchen checks when simmering, baking, broiling and roasting.
- Wear tighter fitting clothing and shorter sleeves while cooking.
- Make sure your oven and all ranges have been turned off before leaving the kitchen.
- Turn handles of pots and pans inward to avoid accidents.
- Follow all manufacturer guidelines regarding the proper use of appliances.
- Designate a responsible adult to walk around the home after guests leave to make sure all candles and smoking materials are extinguished.

Living in New England means that the weather could change, drastically, without a moment's notice. Is your building or property ready for winter? Freezing temperatures, ice, snow and wind can cause severe damage to your property, especially when they take you by surprise. Follow these helpful tips to assist you in preparing your property for unpredictable winter weather. Build-up of Ice and Snow on Your Roof Ice and snow build-up can cause seepage, wall and ceiling cracking, and even roof collapses. Safeguard your roof by:
- Avoiding a warm attic by properly insulating the attic floor. This will also help you save on your heating bills.
- Providing for continuous ventilation of attic air. Ideally, the attic air should be only five to ten degrees warmer than the outside air.
