ASK PEPPER JOE

==============

Hi Pepper Joe,
I wrote you a few weeks ago about some sick peppers of mine in Indonesia. I'm glad to say that they have gotten much better! I am  applying fish emulsion, a foliar seaweed spray, wettable sulfur, and an anti-fungal milk spray and antibacterial/fungal chili/garlic spray. I am  pretty sure the original problem wasn't spider mites (although I have  had those on my basil plant and the sulfur is clearing them up nicely).
The marks on the leaves make me think of bacterial leaf spot. It's also  possible the peppers have a viral infection and the other sprays cleared  up some secondary problems that were weighing down its immune system. In  any case, I definitely recommend the two recipes below, which I got from
Golden Harvest Organics on the net. Living in a tropical climate really  gives bacterial/fungal infections a boost! I include the recipes in case
you want to put it in your FAQ section...

Garlic/Chili Fungicide Spray
Ingredients:
1 head garlic
3 cups water
2 Tbsp canola oil
4 hot peppers (I used 1 cayenne and three thai sun variants grown locally)
1 whole lemon (I substituted a lime, remember to add the peel too!)

Blend ingredients in blender until finely chopped. Let steep over night.
Strain through cheesecloth (or a cotton undershirt). Use once every 5-7
days at 4 Tbsp per gallon and store in frig. Good for both prevention
and cure of bacterial/fungal problems. Apply as a foliar spray and don't
be afraid to spray the soil around the plant.

Milk Spray (for mosaic disease/mildew/fungus)
Ingredients:
milk / milk powder
water

The recipe calls for a 50/50 blend of fresh milk to water or 2 oz dry
milk powder to 18 oz water. I use 1 cup of strong milk (mixed from milk
powder) per gallon and that seems to be working well too. Apply as a
foliar spray every 5-7 days.

My two thai sun plants are already starting fruit, and I'm hopeful that
some of my bigger plants will get to that point in a month or so. Thanks
for the ideas and advice...

 Happy gardening,
 Nate

I had/am having a great crop of ghost peppers, both types. I purchased seeds from someone else the first year and got ZERO,,,,,my buddy got ZERO. this season I got seed from you and enjoying a bountiful harvest. Thank you for the quality, I do organic and put lots of energy into my peppers, it is nice to be rewarded with high quality produce!!!!! Can't get that without the quality seed!

I just love getting letters like this.  I need the reinforcement too that we are giving you a quality product and service.  We do occasionally get a bad letter...but we jump right on it and satisfy our customers.

Hey Pepper Joe.
I bought some seeds from you last winter.  One packet was your Giant  But Jolokia.  Through my reading online I saw that this plant would be  tricky to grow.  My experience with your seeds has been just the  opposite.  I have a greenhouse with a plant from your seeds in it.   This Giant Bhut has truly become GIANT.  From soil to tallest leaf is about 7 feet and a wingspan of at least 8 feet.  The plant is huge!
It dropped its first set of flowers months ago, but patience has paid  off and I estimate a harvest of roughly 200 peppers from this single  monster plant.  Four other plants from the same packet have exceeded 5 feet in height and are fruiting nicely.  Keep up the great work!
Daniel Groen

That Jolokia can really produce Daniel.  Mine get that tall...love hearing some of my customers do as well.

Joe

Every Ghost Pepper seed that I bought from you sprouted and now I have 8 of the most beautiful pepper plants I've ever grown.  I did share a few plants with military folks at NAS Pensacola.  They love it spicy on base.

My order for next year's pepper seeds will be along soon

Thanks David.  I do appreciate you and your business.

Pepper Joe,
I'd like to thank you for the catalog and I look forward to growing some of your peppers and tomatoes this year. I have a few questions about the best way to start these from seed. Up until now I've always bought pepper plants from the nursery and have been disappointed with the small selection of varieties that they stock, so this year I'll be starting my own from your seeds.

- Is the pepper that you call "chili hot peppers" in your catalog the same pepper that is also known as a Tepin (or Chiltepin)? If so, I would like to grow these, but I have read that they are difficult to germinate because they have a tough coating on the seed that is designed to survive a trip through a bird's stomach. I took you chili trivia quiz and one of the questions referenced soaking certain chili seeds in salt peter for this reason. Is this one of the seeds that you would recommend doing this with? Do you have a recipe for the salt peter solution? How long should they soak? What other peppers should be treated in this way?

- I have limited garden space in my raised beds so I can't separate the peppers by more than a few feet. How can I best select peppers that will not cross-pollinate? If I were to grow one variety of Habanero, a Bhut Jolokia, a sweet pepper, and a Chili Hot Pepper, would I have a problem (would my sweet pepper be hot, my hot peppers less so, etc)?

- I have built raised bed 8'x8' gardens and I have the opportunity to mix the soil however I want. I want to make one bed optimum for peppers and tomatoes. The mix I have planned is 1/2 well composted horse manure, 1/4 shredded dried leaf mulch, and 1/4 vermicompost (worm castings) from my worm bed. Is there anything else you'd recommend adding to get the best results?

I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks.

HI Andrew,
You are so right about the poor selection of Pepper Plants.  And in rural areas it is almost impossible to find a variety.
That is one reason many people are turning to growing their own.  Price is another big reason....Supermarket prices are sky high and the selection is poor.
My Chili Hot Pepper is not the Tepin...it is in the Cayenne family. You can grow the Tepin without Salt Peter solution...most peppers grow and germinate great without it.
Don't worry about cross pollination....it will not effect this years crop.  If it does occur it will impact the SEEDS and possibly mutate next years crop.  In small gardens it is almost inevitable.
Your soil mix sounds great...just toss in a small shovel full of coarse sand...it will keep your mix loose and friable.
You are on the right track Andrew...good questions and you are thinking ahead.
I'd say 90% of Gardening is mental...very little luck involved.
Fiery Regards,
Pepper Joe

Editors note:  I later corrected this email to Andrew...I received another email adking the same question so I checked it further.

They were right...my Chili Hot Pepper was the same as the Chile Tepin.  I had labled it differently many years ago...and realized it now.  LISTEN to your Customers.   :)

TELL PEPPER JOE

Gang, I get some letters asking for advice that I am not the expert on.  If you have some information on these topics please email me at pepperjoe@sc.rr.com
1. I have customers asking me about growing Peppers hydroponicly....any tips?
2. I get an occasional email asking me which system to buy for gro-lites or an equivalent product.  I've never grown Peppers under lights, so your input would be appreciated.

THANKS,
Pepper Joe

New Breed of Super-Hot Peppers Coming??

Yes, I think so.  Some of us have read recent Newspaper publicity about the "Naga Viper" Pepper.

cool Name, huh?

More details to follow as the News continues to unfold.

But there ARE some Peppers out there now that could challenge the Ghost Pepper or Bhut Jolokia who have held the Crown since 2000.

Names like Trinidad Scorpion, 7 Pot Pepper, Douglah, Butch T and more.

Some claim to be as much as 200,000 Scoville Units above the current Champ, the Ghost Pepper.

Right now, nothing is official, but we have secured seeds from most of these varieties and will be growing them this summer here in South Carolina, and in our test Gardens.  Also, we've sourced out a Farmer in Michigan to help us.

SORRY....no seeds available until next year.

But I want to assure you we are on it.

We'll be WAY ahead of your largest Seed Companies on these varieties...I promise you.

Meanwhile, relax and enjoy the HOTTEST Peppers known to Man...officially...and in the Guinness Book of Worlds Records.

You can even grow the Ghost Pepper in containers.  Just look at this Awesome plant that produced over 200 Chiles!!!
