SPIRITUS
Recent Photographs by Elisabeth Sunday
Through November 2011
"Mirror photography is much more than photographing a reflection, it produces a visual alchemy that combines the physical world with that of the great mystery. Photographing with mirrors allows me to see the world in a different light and capture some element that remains hidden in straight photography. The use of elongation in indigenous and western art has long been an archetype for the unconscious. Following in this tradition, I use my mirror to shine into the internal deep spaces where we universally connect to something greater." - Elisabeth Sunday

MIMESIS: Sculptural Works by Jonah Jacobs and Rebecca Cross
Through November 18, 2011
Live music October 21
Using distinctly different materials, Rebecca Cross and Jonah Jacobs both draw upon nature to create organic, whimsical sculpture that evokes forest, flower, and sea life. Both artists create a tension between weird and familiar, raw and delicate, creating a complex visual experience that feels oddly natural.
Survival Kit's October open house also features piano performances by Rob Kovacs. |
The Coast is Never Clear, featuring new works by Annie Stimson, MFA
Thesis Exhibition
October 21-November 20, 2011
The Coast is Never Clearis a new body of work by sculpture and installation artist, Annie Stimson, which speaks to the fear and uncertainty of our present state and unknown future. Ideas of ritual, alchemy, history, and science present themselves in works that delicately and beautifully hint at the trepidation the future may hold and perhaps what our role in it might be. Stimson uses materials such as laboratory equipment and neon tubing to refer to science and technology, present and future, both disastrous and beneficial. Ornate patterning of text references our past while their phrases speak of our ominous future. On the verge of 2012, a year overwrought with prophesies about the end of the world, this exhibition is one artist's take on what may be to come.
