 Libby Chaney:
I | Travel | Eye
Tregoning & CompanyLibby Chaney is a Cleveland-born San Fransisco textile artist working with patterned fabrics and recycled cloth, assembled through hand and machine stitching. Libby's great grandmothers were seamstresses, her grandmother a milliner, and her grandfather was an officer in a textile mill in Cleveland. She has sewn "forever" and art-worked with textiles since the 60's. Chaney's sophisticated fabric assemblages compel your eye to travel around each work savoring both subtle details and grand conception. Libby Chaney will offer lively comments on her art and career during our Exhibit opening 5-9p. |
 Nevada Smith:
houses=mountains
June 17-August 19, 2011
Survival Kit is proud to present the prints of Nevada Smith. Working in the trades - first with his father in demolition, and recently as a carpenter - has affected his sensibility toward wood blocks. These pieces are meant to communicate a search for significance in landscapes of run down, manmade structures - similar to what is often sought from a waterfall or mountain. Opening night, June 17 will feature live music beginning at 9:30p.

 Night: New Works by
Hilary Aurand
Through July 2, 2011
From artist Hilary Aurand: This series of paintings focuses on industrial settings and the landscape that surrounds them, specifically how they appear at night. The incentive to paint these areas emerges from my interest in the play of light and color on mundane architecture and scenery. I am interested in exploring how these nocturnal scenes are stripped of their detail, emphasizing the initial shapes and inspiring a new color palette. These are not nocturnal scenes of moonlit nature, but man-made objects and structures illuminated by artificial light. The glow of sodium vapor lights on empty semi trucks, eroding patches of paint on brick buildings and overgrown vines reclaiming a broken fence: these scenes hum with their own kind of vibrancy. I intend to channel the energy generated from gritty and mundane into these new works.

 Eternal Vibrations:
Ernie Horvath, Susan Squires, Darren Waterston
An exhibition focusing on the Realm of the Spiritual, Mystical and Metaphysical Worlds through the work of three artists from different generations - Ernie Horvath (Cleveland, 1926-2010), Susan Squires (Cleveland, Contemporary, b. 1942) and Darren Waterston (San Francisco, Contemporary, b. 1965). All of these artists have strived to "represent the invisible," creating images of that indescribable liminal state of reality, the intersection of the physical and metaphysical.

 John Nativio: Transmutation
paintings + drawings + sculpture
Provocative glimpses over urban and rural settings leave capricious projections of what we have transformed, and how these transformations may change us. As these images expand, an interpolation between them exists; invention and the need to progress, whether well intended or not, will force the environment on a new path, leaving new discoveries in its wake. Visions of nature slowly become consumed by the modern world and what appears to be departing, reconstructs anew. - John Nativio
