Alfredo Arreguin, Frida DoradaAlfredo Arreguin:
Universal Patterns

Don't miss Seattle-based Mexican-American painter Alfredo Arreguin's regional premiere! Arreguin's paintings are incredible, hypnotic mazes that weave vivid Mesoamerican icons with exotic flora and fauna - images that Douglas Max Utter has called, "...prayers for a better, older place, incantations summoning lost worlds."

From Alfredo Arreguin: Patterns of Dreams and Nature by Lauro Flores: "Alfredo Arreguin's pictorial works inhabit an elusive zone that lies between the real and the marvelous, between dream and wakefulness.  All that is magic, the ungraspable, acquires, shape, form and color on his canvases."
William Scheele, Heron In SnowA Passion for Nature:
The Art of William E. Scheele

From October 2008 to January 2009, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History honored one of their greatest contributors with an exhibit of his outstanding natural history paintings.  Those works by former museum director William E. Scheele are now on exhibit at Kokoon Arts.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Scheele began working in CMNH's Exhibition Department while attending the Cleveland School of Art.  He quickly rose to the rank of Museum Director, eventually guiding the rebirth of the museum in the University Circle area in the late 1950's, when it was hailed as one of the top natural history museums in the world. After leaving Cleveland in 1972, Scheele's career continued with the World Wildlife Fund, the Miami Museum of Science, the South Carolina Museum Commission, and the Columbus Museum of Arts and Sciences.

Throughout his life, Scheele's artwork reflected the world of nature, from detailed studies of plants and animals, to conjuring images of prehistoric life, to wilderness landscapes. His favorite medium was watercolor, with all its fluidity and brilliance of color, and quickness of execution.

Memorabilia & Photographs from William Scheele

Kokoon Arts Gallery is proud to present an exhibition documenting the music business experience of William Scheele from 1969 through 1976, when he was closely associated with The Band, Bob Dylan, and other musicians of the time.  This show marks the 40th anniversary of The Band's first concerts in San Francisco, when Bill joined his friend Jon Taplin as Albert Grossman's management team for The Band.

This exhibition features material and images from major events like the Woodstock Festival, the Concert for Bangla Desh, Watkins Glen, and Bob Dylan & The Band's Before the Flood tour.  From his time as Equipment/Stage Manager, Scheele shares stage set-up diagrams, song set lists, tour itineraries and promotional materials.  Also included are photographs taken at the 1973 Watkins Glen & Roosevelt Stadium shows, the 1974 tour featuring Bob Dylan & The Band and 1975's SNACK concert in San Francisco.

Keri GortzThe Art of Keri Gortz at Kokoon

Kokoon Arts is pleased to announce representation of artist Keri Gortz.  Born in Milwaukee, Gortz established herself in Cleveland in 1982, studying with Shirley Campbell and marrying artist Lee Gortz (whose work will also be represented by Kokoon).  Together, they formed Keri-Lee Studios, producing mural paintings, faux finishes and dimensional decorative elements.  For the past decade, Keri has been developing a series of mixed media paintings based on animal subjects and stories told by aboriginal peoples from around the world.

In addition to Gortz, Kokoon Arts also now represents Nebraska artist Karen Kunc and San Francisco painter and printmaker Darren Waterston.  Both artists' work, like that of Keri Gortz, is filled with the spiritual -- elements of myth, cosmology and natural forces. For more about Kunc and Waterston, click here.

Kokoon Arts
Kokoon Arts continues the tradition started in 1911 by William Summer and other Cleveland Graphic Arts Tradesmen, then known as The Kokoon Arts Club, to promote a more modernist approach to producing art.

We will always revere and honor historic traditional media, but the evolution of artistic creativity is never-ending, and new possibilities are generated using electronic and digital media.
