  Mentor Corporation Community Works Day

Mentor employees volunteer at FoodBank
Foodbank and Mentor

United Way of Santa Barbara County partnered with Mentor Corporation in Goleta for a Community Works Day of Service.  More than 100 Mentor employee volunteers participated in a dozen projects throughout the day, benefiting Santa Barbara County non-profit agencies with great work in support of their programs.

The event took place on June 15th and featured volunteer sites at several local non-profit agencies including PathPoint, Foodbank of Santa Barbara, Casa Esperanza, and many more.  Volunteers took on a variety of projects such as sorting donations, cleaning facilities, tree-planting, and assembling Home-Play Learning Kits for young children. The volunteer day resulted in an estimated 350-400 volunteer hours of work divided over a dozen different sites.

"Our first Community Works Day was a great success and more than 100 associates participated," said Christopher Allman, Director, Corporate. Communications, Mentor Worldwide LLC.  "We look forward to continuing our work with the United Way for more volunteer opportunities in the future."

Members of United Way of Santa Barbara County's Heritage Club celebrated for the 25th consecutive year on Wednesday, May 26, 2010.  This year, the Annual Heritage Club Appreciation Luncheon took place at Maravilla Senior Living Community, and was generously underwritten by the Forster Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

The Heritage Club was established in 1982 to honor those forward-thinking individuals who have made provisions to leave their legacy to this community as part of their overall estate plan.  Through wisely planned gifts, they have endowed their United Way support for generations to come.

If you have named United Way in your will or estate plan, please let us know so we can thank you and honor you in perpetuity as a member of the Heritage Club.  To learn more about becoming a Heritage Club member please contact Judy Goodbody, CFRE, IAR, CTRP, Gift Planning Services Officer at 965-8591 ext.120, or email jgoodbody@unitedwaysb.org or visit our website at www.unitedwaysb.org/giftplanning.

Volunteer at Fun in the Sun's Lunch Bunch 2010

FITS

Lunch Bunch, a crucial part of United Way's Fun in the Sun program, is looking for business/organizations to participate in Lunch Bunch which begins June 28th.  While Lunch Bunch operates at four different Fun in the Sun sites, La Cumbre Jr. High and Girls Inc. of Carpinteria are the two sites which have a sizeable need for more Lunch Bunch team members.

Lunch Bunch is a vital part of the program the children look forward to each day, and it is an incredibly rewarding experience for those volunteers willing to give just a little time on one or more days. Lunch Bunch connects Fun in the Sun kids with hundreds of caring adults from the local community. The Lunch Bunch program provides caring individuals with a fun way to get involved during their lunch hour. Volunteers have a chance to chat, play, and even plan activities for the kids.

Many teams come up with their own creative contributions like holding a book drive, organizing a soccer game with the kids, or sponsoring a barbeque! Lunch Bunch is an intentional time for you to be a positive role model for these children, and we encourage you and your team to come up with a fun way to educate them about what you do in your job.

Please contact Lunch Bunch Coordinator Kellen Skersies at 805-965-2101 or e-mail him at kskersies@unitedwaysb.org if you would like to sign up, or if you want more information.

MOXY

More than 40 members and guests of United Way of Santa Barbara County's Young Leaders Society attended a Professional Development event on June 16, at Enterprise Fish Co.  The guest speaker, Michele Mollkoy, presented the topic "Moxy".  At the "MOXY" event  guests learned how to lead their own lives in the midst of performance reviews, co-worker drama, and professional opportunities. They learned what it means to approach each situation in  life from the perspective of self-leadership, and heard real-life examples of how others have stepped up to the challenge.
