Exciting Developments for Fun in the Sun 2010
Enrollment for Fun in the Sun (FITS) 2010 is officially underway! Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast, and United Way of Santa Barbara County are working with agencies, schools, and individuals to recruit for this year's program. Young Leaders Society
Hosts Successful Volunteer Weekend!
More than 25 members of United Way of Santa Barbara County's Young Leaders Society participated in the first Volunteer Weekend! YLS members hosted a craft table at Santa Barbara Central Library's Day of the Child/Day of the Book, and other members formed a team of walkers at American Cancer Society's 24-hour Relay for Life!
Day of the Child/Day of the Book
YLS Members Bobby Blessing, Eric Bravo, Alex Koper and Janine Buseman-Williams |
Approximately 20% of U.S. children experience substantial difficulties in learning to read, with more than a third reading below the basic level. To encourage literacy development in Santa Barbara children, Young Leaders Society volunteers participated in Day of the Child, hosted by the Santa Barbara Central Library on May 1, 2010. This free public event featured a range of activities for children such as bilingual story time, music, face painting, and more, with free books distributed to attending children. With the help of Young Leaders Society volunteers, children had the opportunity to craft their own bookmarks.
Relay For Life
Cancer Survivor Faye Tabin, with YLS member Tania Figueroa and her co-worker Martha Estrada |
Starting at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 1st and ending at 10:00 am on Sunday May 2nd, thirty teams camped out at Bishop Diego High School for American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Relays are 24 hours in length, representing the reality that cancer never sleeps. By participating, YLS members honored cancer survivors, paid tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raised money to help fight cancer in the community.
