Weekend Sale Proceeds Benefited Wicker Park Gardens, UK Village Cathedral
| Wicker Park | The array of plants alongside Linda as she enjoyed lunch at Big Star, 1531 N. Damen, above, confirmed our guess that the local resident had visited the nearby plant sale, which took place in Wicker Park's park this past weekend.
Proceeds from the sale and workshops will go to the maintenance and beautification of the 10,000 sq. ft. of park grounds, and help to fund the Wicker Park Garden Club's lecture and workshop series and children's programming. Per master gardener Doug Wood, 50 volunteers worked the event, 2,000
shoppers attended the sale, and 80 individuals participated in two
workshops.
Each stick represents a 'sold' plant | On late Sunday near closing, I popped by to catch some final deals on plants and chat up Doug for an estimate on sales numbers. He called over a volunteer who hauled a large bag of sticks, each representing a sold plant.
"How many are in there?" I asked Doug.
"You're a hardworking reporter, you should get to work and count them," Doug suggested, perhaps joking.
He agreed that it would be accurate to say that this year's sale went even better than last year's, with one notable difference: more heirloom herbs and vegetables were sold than ever before. "People are wanting to know more about how they can grow things they can eat," Doug noted.
In other edible fundraising news,
(l to right) Helen, Xenia, Matushka and Rose | also this past weekend, members of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral in Ukrainian Village hosted their second annual Strawberry Social to help raise funds to restore the landmark cathedral at 1112 N. Leavitt, which was designed by architect Louis Sullivan. About 100 families worship at the parish, with many commuting from the suburbs.
Tony, a parishoner who was cleaning the cathedral when we popped by Sunday afternoon | A parishioner noted that this year's social "made close to last year's" and that they'd made a big push with fliers and signs.
With the social ending at 1 PM and The Pipeline popping by just before closing, the strawberries were put away, thus we can offer no food photos; instead click here to see images inside the sanctuary, which is in the midst of various restoration projects.

Community Safety Meeting Coverage by Nandika Doobay
| 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack listening to meeting attendees/photo by Nandika Doobay | Bucktown residents met with 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack and
District 14 police this past Thursday morning at Club Lucky to discuss safety
concerns following the vicious beating and robbery of two young women.
The attack, which occurred early in the morning of April 23 under the
viaduct on the 1800 block of north Damen, left the victims Natasha McShane
and Stacy Jurich hospitalized and the neighborhood on high alert.
Police
presence in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area was noticeably increased in
the days following the attack, with officers handing out community
alert fliers, interviewing business owners and even giving courtesy
rides to people walking late at night, who they felt might make easy
targets. Streets and Sanitation pitched in as well by searching
garbage bins for possible discarded items pertaining to the case.
By
the beginning of the week, two suspects were in custody and Alderman
Waguespack started the meeting by commending all the police work that
went into making the arrests. "We have some of the best police
officers at work in our area," said Waguespack, before introducing newly
appointed District 14 Commander Flores. READ ON.
-by Nandika Doobay
[Editor's Note: Cans Bar & Canteen, 1640 N. Damen will host a gathering this Sat. May 8th from 8-11 PM. All proceeds will benefit a fund to pay for Stacy Jurich's medical expenses. Donations also accepted at stacyjurichbenefit.com.]

Sponsored News: Sapere Art Gallery |
by Teresa J. Parker | Sapere Art was buzzing--paper flying all over, a camera on a tripod, and
bright lights--during the taking photos of newly arrived works. Gary said, "I'll
send you a pic, this show is going to be hot!" Entitled "Keeping Us All A Breast," Gary is showing one of a kind linocut prints from his new artist Teresa J. Parker. The series grew from
Parker's desire to present visual
options for dealing with breast cancer--a
disease of global concern that afflicts one out of every three women--with humor and grace. Parker's show opens 6 PM this Friday, May 7, and coincides with the Flat
Iron's First Friday, as well as the Gilda's Club fund-raiser on Sat., May 8. Check www.sapereart.com for more information and a sneak peak at these
stunning works, or drop on by the FIA Arts Bldg, 1579 N. Milw. Studio 341. Gary can be spotted inside his gallery almost seven days a week these days. |
Sponsored News: Jackson Junge Gallery
| Though Charlie and Cooper Dolin might not be well known names in the art world, their mother regularly visits the Jackson Junge Gallery, 1389 N. Milw., with her sons to expose them to exhibits as well as to get their masterpieces framed. According to Chris of Jackson Junge, above, "It's a great way to get the picture off the refrigerator
door and on the wall for a long lasting memory. It also gives confidence
and accomplishment to the future artists!" Route 66 | Next
in the gallery's 'pipeline' is a free concert, featuring ROUTE 66, Chicago's female a cappella
quartet, starting at 6PM on Tues. May 11th. Complimentary refreshments will be served. Call the gallery at 773-227-7900 for more information.

Correction: In last week's issue we published an incorrect address for Reina Spa. The correct address is 1821 W. North. We regret the error.
Third time's a charm? In musical storefront news, Lattas & Lattas, a law firm specializing in loan modification, recently moved across the street, from 2220 W. North to larger digs at 2235 W. North, in a building formerly occupied by Mortgage Investment Specialists. About a year or so ago the same building was home to the offices of Freedom Mortgage, which has since closed. Cumin, 1414 N. Milw., is opening soon. Provided all goes well (there's still a final inspection to pass), the restaurant, specializing in modern Nepalese cuisine, will welcome diners as early as May 10th, per co-owner Rajesh. Rajesh | A Bucktown resident, Rajesh and his brother, Sanjeev, are the brains behind the joint venture. For nearly a decade Rajesh helped to manage an Indian restaurant on the North Shore. "I've been working for other people for a long time," he noted on a recent afternoon. He said he's excited about living so close to where he works, then went on to explain the key difference between Indian and Nepalese food, namely that the latter is cooked with fewer dairy products. He then got back to the business at hand: deciding where to place various wall hangings and art pieces from Nepal. Sign installation at Geisha Sushi | In other news, Blu Coral, 1265 N Milw., was sold a few months back. The new owners have renamed the establishment Geisha Sushi and made the news official by installing a sign Steve, in blue, and friend Shai | this past Friday, just minutes before the late afternoon rain. Geisha's manager Steve said that he formerly worked at a downtown sushi restaurant and is excited about the new opportunity. Per Steve, the owners of Geisha also own and operate Blue Ocean in Wrigleyville, Nozumi in Barrington, and Blue Ginger in Naperville. Carrie, a tour guide for Chicago Food Planet | In last week's issue we lamented the fact that Dairy Queen, 1649 N. Damen, is not yet open. The good news is that Just Indulge, 1755 W. North, and iCream, 1537 N. Milw, are both able to satisfy cravings. Tourists taking part in a Wicker Park food tour run by Chicago Food Planet Tours were spotted outside of iCream this past week. It was the final leg of a three hour culinary walking adventure which popped by George's Hot Dogs, Sultan's
Market, Hot Chocolate, Goddess & Grocer, and Piece before dessert at iCream. Tour leader Carrie estimates she's led 100 tours since last spring. Carrie also travels the area for her second gig as a personal trainer who makes house calls for comfyfitness.com. Renee, left, and Julie, right | In other space-changing news, as mentioned last week, the Re.Stock shop, will be doing business at 1472 N. Milw. for the next few weeks, per business partners No-chip manicure at M.GO | Julie and Renee, who described their contemporary sportswear designer samples and overstock selections as having an 'urban vibe.' In other news--which might be old news or new news depending on if you live nearby any of these spots --Rentology, a division of Domus Group, opened recently in the Domus storefront at 1746 W. Division. Wow & Zen at 1912 N. Damen continues its closing sale reductions. M.GO Salon, 1754 W. Division, recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its remodeling, which resulted in an expansion to two floors. |
Intrepid Man on Brink of 'Mad Professor' Receives 'The Usual' at Swagger
|
Pat, "Before" | I didn't really think I needed a haircut, but as Megan at Swagger
pointed out, there's always some trimming to be done. So I got "the
Usual" cut, which includes a shampooing and conditioning treatment with
a hot towel and scalp massage. It felt good, and was about ten times
more than what I usually do with what's left of my hair--soap in the
shower and a friend with scissors every couple months when I hit that
"mad professor" stage. Not that the "mad professor" lacks its own
certain charm, Megan noted, as she shaped my shorn look into into
something more like a "style." Megan has worked as a stylist for about
11 years, Pat, "After" | and opened her salon in October 2008, specializing in men's
hair, although women are welcome. (Working with women's hair is "way
different," Megan says.) Among the staff are licensed barbers who offer
the "Old School Shave" with hot towels and a straight razor. The place
is confortable, with good music (Nirvana, Radiohead) playing low, and
Henry, the salon's inquisitive and friendly watchdog, greeting guests.
Swagger offers a number of services, including waxing and free neck
trims between cuts. They're at 1711 W. Division, hours vary, and
drop-ins are welcome (shaves are by appointment only). You can learn
more by calling 773-384-9001 or visiting swaggersalon.com.

So Many Options, Oh Brother... Um, we mean, 'Mother'
| 'Wicker Tim' and 'Buck Lily' | When The Pipeline last followed up with 'Wicker Tim' and 'Buck Lily,' the locally minded couple had just taken the plunge and moved in together after meeting shortly before Valentine's Day.
After exhausting the various adult toys they'd purchased for each other from the Valentine's Day serial-story sponsors g Boutique and Batteries Not Included, the couple tackled the more practical business of visiting Colori, an eco paint boutique, 2243 W. North, and selecting paint colors for their two-bedroom vintage condominium.
While sitting in their kitchen this past weekend, Buck Lily looked up from from her RedEye Sudoku puzzle and asked, "Do you know what next Sunday is?"
'West Town Dave' with tyke-sized hats at Bullfrogs & Butterflies | Wicker Tim replied with no hesitation. "Yes, Sunday will be my first
weekend on the links! I'm bringing 'West Town Dave' and his infant nephew, who refuses to wear anything but golf-inspired onesies from Bullfrogs & Butterflies. We're going to get him started on the
golf cart early. We got him these cute hats too. We had our choice of
tee times. Isn't that weird for a Sunday in May?!"
"Well, it's no surprise you had your choice of tee times!," huffed Buck Lily. "Don't you know that next Sunday is Mother's Day? Most people will be spending the day with mothers and not on the golf course."
"Jimminy Crickets, I forgot! Does this mean that BOTH of our moms are coming to the city?! You know they can't be together for more than a few minutes!"
"Yes," I know," Buck Lily replied. "That's why I'm thinking we should schedule separate activities and pair off. Please just look through the WPB-Sponsored Neighborhood Guide to Wicker Park & Bucktown that I saved from Time Out Chicago and let me Photo courtesy of Larkspur | know what you want to do with your mom. I'm too tired to run down options with you."
"Fine, I will, may I see the guide?," Wicker Tim asked, adding, "Do you think we should have some flowers waiting for our moms too, and maybe deliver an arrangement to my grandmother?"
"Now you're talking, Honey Bunches, please visit Larkspur to see Mother's Day specials, or pop by 2123 N. Damen."

Spring is Here: An excerpt from Dina's e-newsletter
| Dina Petrakis | Spring is here, and a homeowner's fancy turns to...grout". That was
the intro line to Littlerock's very first newsletter (via snailmail) in
April, 1996. Since then much of the world has changed- but a homeowner
still needs to keep an eye on the castle. Spring Maintenance tips are
in the first block below, for your reference. Yes, we CAN take care of any of this- enabling you to spend more free time with friends and family.
Many of you know that Littlerock hasn't been a General Contractor since 2000; you may not know
that we do manage renovation projects- to the extent desired by our
clients. If you need a site visit because you're tied up with a big
client at work, we've got you covered. If you want the full thing
handled- from competitive bidding to 100% completion, or anything in
between- we do that too. The bottom block shows before and after shots
of the kitchen of a bungalow we did recently- as part of a whole-house
renovation we managed for a busy executive.

Hair 2day, Gone 2mrw! How clippings can clean up the oil in the Gulf.
| Hairbooms, spotted on Good Blog | If
you work for any type of hair salon, pet grooming service, or even if
you just cut hair for your friends, listen up. Hair
clippings woven into mats or stuffed into pantyhose (called
"hairbooms") can help contain an oil spill. (Much like sandbags are
used to contain flood waters.) According to the Good Blog, this method was used for the Exxon Valdez spill of '89. Head over HERE to learn more about it. --- Submitted by Lauren Kleiman

A Southerner on 'The Southern' by David Tolliver, Jr.
| David Tolliver, Jr. | I am originally from Mississippi so when "The Southern" opened I had to go and give it a chance. Immediately my mouth started to water just to read those
words on a menu that makes a southerner get weak in the knees, i.e. okra,
cornbread, chicken and biscuits. I
have become a regular on Sunday as the brunch menu is excellent comfort food
after a Saturday night out in Bucktown. My favorites on the brunch menu include shrimp and
grits, Sunday mac n' cheese, and the country breakfast. Ask the bartender to make you a
Magnolia to wash it all down. The
Southern is the former Chaise Lounge, 1840 W. North, but the only reminder will be when they
bring you the credit card receipt.
The Southern is a new and good addition to Bucktown.
David relocated to Chicago in 2008 after finishing up a four year Navy tour in Naples, Italy. David works in the HR profession and spends free time traveling, running, and improving his photography skills.

Review: Happy Karaoke Fun Time! An Improvised Karaoke Musical
| Members of WeSingYouLaugh.com | Having completed a songwriting class and knowing how difficult it is to write lyrics, I can imagine the pressure of an audience awaiting your next lyric and you perhaps not knowing what it will be until you hear your own voice singing it.
Nevertheless, the folks involved in Happy Karaoke Fun Time! managed to do it and do it astonishingly well. The fun began when they asked the audience for a suggestion for an improv sketch as well as a number from 1 through 60, corresponding with the 60 popular tunes in the DJ's cache. Mid-way through the improvised sketch, or when the DJ deemed it was time to introduce music, the bars began as the actors responded by transitioning from speaking to singing. Is it worth shelling out $10 on a Wednesday evening at 10 PM? If you like watching improv and karaoke as I do, yes--in fact I'm eager to see another show--but if you aren't a fan of either, well, there's probably something on the television that you can watch, right? Chances are it won't be as interesting though...
HKFT! runs Wednesdays at 10 PM through May 26th. $10. Gorilla Tango Theatre, 1919 N. Milw. Call 773-598-4549 or visit gorillatango.com.
Fun Fact: Per NBC2Chicago.com, here's a list of the best places for karaoke in Chicago. Two are located in the neighborhood. Thanks to the 'Wicker Park' Facebook page where I spotted this link.

A Mother's Day Reflection By Gary Marks
|
Gary | When my mom died last December my brother and I both spoke
at the funeral. I had often thought about what I would say that day and long
ago I decided that the speech would begin, "my mom was a blonde from the day
she was born to the day she died". Now certainly there was some vanity attached to that standing
Friday afternoon beauty parlor appointment, but for me
that blondness was more a symbol of my mother's incredible resilience and her determination to continue caring
about the things she thought were important.
She was a Big Band, Frank Sinatra loving 50's girl and in
the vernacular of her time I think they would've said "she was a real class
act". She was smart, she was funny
and she looked like Grace Kelly and had the poise to match. She met my dad at a
resort where he was playing and before you knew it they were raising three kids
in a nice old house on Chicago's south side. Then in 1962 a drunk driver struck
my parent's car and my mom was left crippled for the rest of her life.
For weeks she was in a coma, then there was a year spent in
one rehabilitation hospital after another, but eventually she came home and was
again just our mom. We got grounded, we got help with our homework, we got our
allowance if we mowed the grass and we again had someone to watch old movies
with. "Frankly Scarlet, I don't
give a damn." The one thing we
didn't get was someone who was constantly asking, "Why me? Why did this happen to me?"

Review: Gone with the Pope by Joe Rubin
| Joe | Duke Michell's GONE WITH THE POPE (New American/Exploitation Revival) will debut Mon. May 10th @ Doc Films, 1212 E. 59th St.
Long
before our age of designer "cult" films, underground and truly
independent filmmakers didn't have Youtube, blogs, or Twitter to rely
on to promote their work. In 1975, when Duke Mitchell directed GONE
WITH THE POPE, he didn't have low-grade handicams or digital editing,
devices which have brought cinema to the masses and made it possible
for anyone to unleash unwatchable junk. Like all filmmakers,
Mitchell shot and cut his art on film and, due to limited resources and
funding, he found himself unable to complete POPE before his death in
1981. Reportedly, Duke Mitchell was as over-the-top in life as the
characters he played in his films, though POPE was supposed to be his
most "personal" project, thus he made it less concerned with excessive
violence than telling an absurd story (that story being about an
attempt to kidnap the Pope and extort $1 in ransom money from every
living Catholic). In fact, POPE is remarkably restrained when it comes
to sequences of brutality and Mitchell focuses the entire film on
himself (disguised as a gangster named Paul) allowing it to become a
bizarre, and at times almost documentary like piece of cinematic
narcissism, as the camera to follows him from one outrageous endeavor
to the next. -JR (Visit Joe at Odd Obsession Movies, 1822 N. Milw.)

Guest Editorial: Reflections on Immigration Reform by Larry White
| Our country has been named the "melting pot" because we are
a nation of immigrants. The draw of the American Dream is undeniable. Our current president was easily elected in spite of his foreign sounding name
and his father being a citizen of a foreign country. Even the Hollywood
actors who claimed they would leave the USA when George Bush was elected never packed
up and left. No one can fault an illegal immigrant for wanting to come to America
and no one can expect them to stop trying. We now have millions of people
in our country that got here by a shortcut. They didn't follow the rules
required to enter and took the spots of those who are following the proper protocol
by "cutting" in front of everyone else who are patiently waiting. READ MORE.

UNFILTERED: Responses to Arizona's Immigration Reform
| Jenelle | This past week The Pipeline polled a few locals about their reactions to Arizona's newly passed Support Our law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhood Act, or SB1070, which was signed into legislation April 23rd by governor Jan Brewer and is scheduled to go into effect on July 28th, 2010 in Arizona.
At Filter this past Sunday evening, Jenelle, said: "I think that the law is very ignorant because it might start to [racial] profile everyone and that it not right. My father is full-blooded Italian and my mother was Mexican. She was a waitress and a U.S. Citizen when my dad met her. He was eating at the restaurant." Janelle's sister, who sitting next to her and wished to remain anonymous, added, "I work at a grocery store as a cashier. At night are people who clean the floors. Companies would not be able to run without immigrants. We're all immigrants. It would be such a huge loss of workers if immigrants were let go."
At Dunkin Donuts on Western yesterday (Monday), Stephen said: "Coming here illegally is basically stealing from the U.S. How is it different than going to a movie theater and not paying? My personal feeling is that we need to have them [immigrants] apply Rick | to come here. I live in Naperville, and there are lots of Indian and Pakistani people, and they came here the right way, through the right channels, not by sneaking past border patrol. Since about 1999 illegal immigrants began affecting my industry of construction. It is the fault though of contractors who will exploit the fact that they [illegal immigrants] will work for low wages and no benefits. I am part of a union of workers and there are about 290 of us. Our unemployment rate right now is 80%. I'm not kidding." [The Pipeline did not have camera in tote, thus no photo for Stephen who reported that he was in the neighborhood to bid on on a balcony painting job at a Bucktown condominium building.]
At The Intersection, or 'Six Corners,' Rick, said: "I believe that it [the legislation] will lead to more racial profiling, especially if you are a person of color. You have to have that experience happen to you to know what it feels like. It happened to me near Lawrence and Western. A policeman pulled me over because he said that I was shining a light too bright into his rearview mirror. Then he said I should get a new brand of light. I think he just wanted to pull me over."
Do you have an opinion to share on a current event topic? Please email us. Thanks.
